In seinen Tagebüchern, die der in Amerika geborene Intellektuelle mit der Machtergreifung wieder aufnimmt, entfaltet sich ein intimes Bild der Vorkriegszeit. Ausnehmend klarsichtig schildert er, wie die neuen Machthaber mit der ihnen eigenen Mischung aus geschickt eingesetzter Propaganda, inszenierten Machtdemonstrationen, der skrupellosen Ausübung von Gewalt und einer gut organisierten Bürokratie die Herrschaft absicherten und Stück für Stück ausweiteten. Doch genauso sehr interessiert sich Stresau für sein Umfeld. Reflektiert beschreibt er das Verhalten derjenigen, die sich aus Überzeugung oder Karrieregründen dem System andienen, schildert das Mitläufertum ebenso wie die Gedanken der ihm Gleichgesinnten, die sich den neuen Verhältnissen verweigern. So entsteht ein unvergleichliches Zeitpanorama und Psychogramm der Deutschen. Die Tagebücher wurden von den Herausgebern Peter Graf und Ulrich Faure wiederentdeckt und reichen von 1933-1945. This article analyses the relationship between an emerging EU policy on immigration and asylum, and the 'modernization' of welfare state regimes. The development of new programmes for recruiting skilled and unskilled labour from outside the EU is part of an attempt to make labour markets more flexible and to increase mobility. But it is accompanied by tougher measures to deter asylum seekers and control 'illegal immigration'. The authors argue that this new regulatory regime will continue to be challenged by forced migration and by the spontaneous movement of populations.

Contrasts the influence of immigration on national security policy making in the US & Europe. Discussion begins with a look at how various factors, eg, terrorism & economic issues, inform immigration policy. American attitudes toward both legal and illegal immigration tended to be highly restrictionist during the first half of the twentieth century. Both legislative and executive-branch policy supported this restrictionist outlook up until the 1940s, when a gradual liberalization of immigration policy toward refugees began to occur because of foreign policy requirements and the onset of the cold war. Although only a very small percentage of Americans have advocated increasing the number of immigrants, the percentage who felt that the numbers should be decreased began to decline during the 1950s and 1960s. Liberalization of public opinion and governmental policy occurred. During the past 15 years, however, public opinion and government policy began to diverge. Because of economic and other problems, Americans became more restrictionist toward immigrants, at least when surveyed by public opinion polls. But the government has difficulty implementing a more restrictionist policy for a variety of reasons, among them the strong lobbying efforts of pro-alien activist groups combined with American ambivalence toward the plight of immigrants as individuals.

The social & economic foundations of contemporary immigration patterns from developing to developed regions is examined. Common misconceptions stress the role of wage differentials between sending & receiving nations & lack of economic development in sending regions, but immigration appears to originate from the spread of economic development in Third World nations & the demand for low-wage labor in developed countries. The social foundations of immigration stem from the formation of migrant social networks, sets of interpersonal relations that link together migrants, former migrants, & nonmigrants in sending & receiving regions. Social networks provide momentum to the immigration process & lead to self-perpetuation despite recession, restrictive immigration policies, & decreasing wage differentials. This paper analyzes how population aging affects immigration policy in rich industrialized countries. It sets up a two-period model of a representative democracy with two overlapping generations. The governments preferred immigration rate increases with the share of retirees in the population. The paper differentiates between an economy without a pension system and one with pay-as-you-go pensions. As immigrants have more children than natives, the chosen immigration rate is contingent on the design of the pension system. If pension contributions and benefits are set freely by the government, equilibrium immigration is lower than it is in the absence of a pension system. On the contrary, it is higher if the pension level is fixed ex ante to a relatively generous level, since native worker s then benefit from sharing the burden of pension contributions with the immigrants.

Background:Suicide rate in Hungary was nearly the highest in the world in the decades preceding the transition of the social system. Shortly after the transition in 1989, a radical decrease in fatal suicides occurred, parallel with a marked increase in emigration.Methods:We analyzed the data published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office to detect if there was an association between the remarkable drop in suicide rates and the changes in emigration rates from 1995 to 2019.Results:The results of a brief statistical analysis on the correlation between suicide rate and emigration confirmed a strong negative relationship ( r = −.855, p = .00). For more precise results, we applied linear regression analysis, which showed that the emigration rate predicted 73.2% of suicide rate variances with a high predictive value (β = −.983).Conclusion:The study provides a possible explanation through a phenomenological analysis on major life transformations. Relating the arrested flight/cry of pain theory, the theory of rites of passage and double-bind communication resulted a comprehensive and coherent, but not exhaustive explanation on the relationship between suicide and emigration.

Abstract
International migration represents one of the most important aspects of globalization that contributes to the evolution and transformation of our lives. In 2000, as the United Nations reports showed, approximately 175 million people lived outside their native country for more than 12 months, a number that doubled with respect to the reference year 1975. This means that there are more and more "clashes" between people around the globe, involving greater responsibility for states in integrating the "moving" society. The public perception is continuously impacted by the migration phenomenon in its different aspects, but the effects are highly dependent on the communities' social, cultural and religious pre-determination. In this respect, our paper aims to analyse the reflection of the traditional values of the host society to the individual perceptions on immigration, as expressed in various social media. In our view, in order to maximize the success potential of the public policies adopted by the host states in the field of immigration, these must be tightly correlated with the traditional social values, as observed in the real context, and also closely follow the evolution of these values, as expressed in the digital space. For this purpose, we will compare the social media and real life to show differences and resemblances of the attitudes towards the immigrants who might come in Romania from Middle East.
