"The research project 'The Internet as a space for interaction', which completed its mission in Autumn 1998, studied the constitutive features of network culture and network organisation. Special emphasis was given to the dynamic interplay of technical and social conventions regarding both the net's organisation as well as its change. The ethnographic perspective chosen studied the Internet from the inside. Research concentrated upon three fields of study: the hegemonial operating technology of net nodes (UNIX) the network's basic transmission technology (the Internet Protocol IP) and a popular communication service (Usenet). The project's final report includes the results of the three branches explored. Drawing upon the development in the three fields it is shown that changes that come about on the Net are neither anarchic nor arbitrary. Instead, the decentrally organised Internet is based upon technically and organisationally distributed forms of coordination within which individual preferences collectively attain the power of developing into definitive standards."
In the face of globalization, more and more researchers have multicultural and multilocal backgrounds. This creates both challenges and possibilities. When combined with conducting research in a context in which people have experienced high levels of social marginalization, the intricacy of the research process increases. Much time, care, and reflection are required to secure ethical conduct and the validity of the research, and to facilitate results that are relevant for all those involved. The transformative paradigm and postcolonial indigenous research methodologies are theoretical frameworks that can guide this process. In this article, we describe some of our experiences while developing an ethnographic dissertation project in a marginalized urban school and its direct surroundings in El Salvador. It is written from two perspectives: Christine SCHMALENBACH writes from her perspective as a German researcher who grew up in Mexico and did research in El Salvador. Mechthild KIEGELMANN writes from the perspective of a mentor who oversaw the project from Germany and was pivotal in spurring and enriching processes of reflection. We share our experiences form the research process hoping that they will be helpful for researchers and advisors in similarly complex situations.
Introduction: This text explains a concept of self-authorship called the trans or trans condition, this concept hopes to contribute to the understanding of the underlying processes of deterritorialisation in transnational societies; it is proposed to reflect on the body through the language practices of the action-enunciation performative statements, that allow to gather more elements to study other areas of life of transnational migrants in the so-called third space. But also, the text explores the geospatial framework as a performative practice of the transnational ethnographer as it is placed in an ethnographic field as a dispersed and overflowing social space, so the researcher's perception must be consistent with this trans condition.Method: It is an ethnographic research with a transnational social field, the central emphasis is to deepen the third space through the reflection of the body through the performative statements. The research synthesises fieldwork experiences of several own investigations during the years 2002-2011, with Mexican and non-indigenous Mexican transmigrants as well as Ecuadorian indigenous people scattered throughout the European Union. Results: The analysis of performative statements can build a better understanding of the processes of deterritorialisation within transnational societies, as well as the concept trans or trans condition, can provide reflections concerning the frames of reference in transnational ethnography. This is fundamental because the simultaneity or synchrony forces to adopt analytical frameworks that expose an ethnographic field in four-dimensionality outside Euclidean logic.Discussions: The concept of trans or trans condition has the following arguments to discuss: central focus on deterritorialisation, use of language through performative statements to understand culture, the importance of frames of reference for the study of Transnational societies, simultaneity or synchrony as an integrating element of trans and transnationality.
Cunha e C.R. Leitura. The female prison system (M.I. Cunha and C.R. Fonseca) and a feminist comparative perspective (M. Bosworth, B.H. Zaitzow & J. Thomas) were used as reference. In order to understand what, why and with what meanings these women read, crossing social dimensions, this study had a qualitative approach with different methodologies (ethnography, individual and group interviews with readers and mediators), and included uses of the physical and social spaces and of time, family relations, relations with other inmates and with the prison staff. The favorite titles were analyzed (chick lit, industrial, light and kitsch literature), taking into account literary genres for women and deconstructing gender and class prejudices that were connected to them. Interpretation was carried out with a diverse theoretical chart (A. Amorós, M. Calinescu, R. Felski, J. Radway and M. Sweeney). The analysis of practices, concepts and representations revealed interesting and eventually unexpected traces about their forms of reading. Keywords: Women's prison. Reading. Light literature. Le système pénitentiaire féminin (M.I. Cunha e C.R. ***Abstract: This paper is intended to discuss the notions of democracy, racial democracy and social order, by analyzing the building process of two researches which focused the same place: Rio de Janeiro's beaches, in Brazil. These two researches took place at distinct historical moments; one, at the last years of XX century, and the other, in the first decade of the XXI century. The notions cited above are studied from the perspectives of the various social segments that frequently go or work there, especially State agents which are part of the public policy named "Choque de Ordem" (a kind of "Order Assault"). In order to do this, these researches are based on qualitative methodology, with interviews and ethnography, and also on documental study of the laws which inflects on this public territory, and bibliographic research on these issues. As a conclusion, the article points out that the way people understand democracy and social order will depend on the position each group has in the broader Brazilian society, and that these ideas are tied to and are modeled by ethnic and class criteria. Its stresses also the political relevance that this public space, the beach, assumes, in order to give visibility to the dispute around the meaning of equality, freedom and hierarchies of color/race and class in Brazilian society.Key words: beach; social order; "Choque de Ordem"; democracy. SUMMARY: Harsha Ram begins responding to his colleagues by addressing Harriet Murav's concerns with the Rabelaisian carnival experience and hence temporary nature of the supra 's power discourse, using it to reiterate his point about the facile binarism of repression and resistance. Ram comments on his colleagues' interpretations of the multivalence of the supra (the mode of acculturation and civilizing; the imposition of form and hence a set of rules onto the innately disruptive experience of inebriation; "unruly" material practice, etc.). He agrees that his literary-centered history of the supra should be supplemented with the spatial history and ethnography of the Georgian feast, mapping its transitions from the Safavid-inspired gardens and taverns of old Tiflis to the aristocratic, military and vice-regal milieus of imperial Russia, to the familial and professional networks of the Soviet era. While embracing similar suggestions, Ram rejects a view that the supra evolved from nativism to nationalism, with the latter understood as a political anti-imperial project. The last half of Ram's response deals with the main disagreement between his commentators and him, pertaining to Partha Chatterjee's methodological model adapted by Ram. Some of his critics suggest that the rootedness of Chatterjee's argument in the specifics of British India and Hindu nationalism makes his model impertinent to the very material Georgian case, whereas Gyan Prakash claims that Chatterjee falls into the trap of identifying with nationalism's metaphysical oppositions instead of exposing their historicity as by-products of a colonial rule that is as modern and hybrid as any other imperial formation. Ram rejects these criticisms of both Chatterjee's and his own attempts to overcome the binarism of nation and empire and explains how his approach parallels Chatterjee's. He does this by reconstituting the nativizing Georgian elite discourse that elevated the supra to the status of a national tradition, while also pointing to the feast's culturally heterogeneous constitutive elements that cannot readily be inscribed into the narrative of the nation. Finally, Ram calls for a renewed methodological synergy between literary history and literary theory on the one hand, and history and the social sciences on the other.
