; This article represents an overview of the developments in the contemporary Ukrainian womens movement and in womens and gender studies from the perspective of changing public attitudes towards the notion of feminism which has been discredited in Soviet times. It identifies four stages and examines major issues in the process of institutionalizing of feminism and feminist research in the Ukrainian academia. The author traces the progress of feminist activism in Ukraine from mater- nalist and traditionalist women's initiatives in the early 1990s up to radical anarchist womens groups in the 2010s. Peculiarities of interactions between womens NGOs and state institutions are explored against the backdrop of changes in the Ukrainian legislation on gender equality.
The main idea of the article is the specificity of the modernization of the Tunisian society, as well as its gender aspect, is largely due to the fact that this process, thanks to the efforts of the ruling elite, began before the establishment of the colonial regime. In the context of the existing Islamic tradition, the degree of engagement of women in the social or productive spheres was conditioned by social differentiation. After establishing the French protectorate, actively using the administrative apparatus, encouraging the growth of the non-Muslim population, the French pursued a policy of cultural colonialism, which led to the design of the ideological and political realities of Tunisia in two directions. Representatives of the first direction continued the traditions of pre-colonial reformism, substantiating the idea of self-sufficiency of Islam. Representatives of the second, not denying the cultural significance of Islam, considered the prospects of modernization with the absorption of European experience.Representatives of Islamic modernism argued that, reformed and adapted to the spirit of time, Islam became the ideological basis of social development, in particular the release of women, whose primary role was to play education. The most radical of them questioned the use of hijab, as a purely Islamic tradition. Without denying the traditions of Islam, they advocated assimilation of the achievements of European culture, science and public opinion. The ideal of a new Tunisian woman appeared in the context of the synthesis of Islamic and Western cultures. He called for the emancipation of women and the reform of family-marital relations, taking into account the socio-cultural traditions of the Tunisian society. Thus, most of the Tunisian intellectual elite was united in the view that women's education is a prerequisite for the modernization of society. However, some advocated for its purely Islamic nature, others did not deny the need for secular nature, in this case the French. The position of this kind undoubtedly created the preconditions for solving the issue of women's education. The process of socializing Tunisian women in the 1930s was manifested in the creation of women's community organizations. Members of such organizations, as a rule, were representatives of an enlightened and prosperous elite of Tunisian society, whose activities were initially charitable.Thesis, westernized Tunisian women, who were mostly educated in France, usually propagandised their own feminist ideas. However, their activities caused a sharp rejection, even among representatives of Islamic modernists. Until the second half of the 1950's, it was not a struggle for emancipation, and participation in the national liberation movement was a dominant factor in the social updating of a number of Tunisian women. Ukraine's Euro-civilization choice, which took place as a result of the Revolution of Dignity, posed a number of challenges to Ukrainian society, without adequate answers to which EU accession will remain a ratherdistant prospect for Ukrainians. One of such challenges is the genderization of the social life of Ukrainians, in particular in the field of education, which presupposes, first of all, the formation of a gender-sensitive space for the existence of the country's citizens; mass involvement of Ukrainian women in all spheres of society on an equal footing with men and the creation of equal opportunities for this. The philosophy of this process is to recognize as the greatest value of human capital, existing in the form of two social sexes (gender) - female and male - with different life experiences, differences and personal strategies of self-realization. The article analyzes, among other, the issue of teaching feminist and (or) gender issues in higher educational institutions of modern Ukraine from the standpoint of philosophical and worldview approach. The author aim is to investigate the real state of gender education in Ukrainian higher education institutions, to analyze the existing problems and identify prospects for the development of this process in Ukraine. A group of political science students from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was involved in an in-depth survey of the need / no need to teach feminist and gender issues in universities. It was concluded that exist the need of genderization higher education in Ukraine as an integral part of the Euro-integration process.
Review of the monograph T. Vlasova, I. Grabovska, Y. Galytska "The actual gender: the international and Ukrainian context". Kyiv: Millenium, 2018. - 132 p.
The problem of transformation of feminist ideologies, peculiarities of formation of gender discourse in postmodern culture, development of gender practices, peripheries of formation of gender system of Ukrainian society are the most urgent, but not all issues which are professionally, convincingly and interestingly considered by the authors of the monograph. Everyone who reads the text will be forced to conclude that the new principles of gender socialization formed in Western culture, which provoked a change in the gender order of postmodern societies, are now actively penetrating into our culture and establishing it, changing the traditional gender structure of Ukrainian society.
The article below analyzes typical peculiarities, the structure and the editorial policies of the magazines «Women's Journal» and «Union of Women» as special publications of the early ХХ century known as «women's ideas'» ones. It is on the pages of these publications that the new feminist ideology was being formed. It is proven that the magazines in question not only depicted discriminating against women or certain women's achievements, but also tried to determine ways to overcome problems that existed at the time. Thus these publications explored the traditional issues of gender equality in marriage and family life, but also in such fields as education, professional development and politics.
The article in question focuses on the analysis of the so-called "woman question" in the discourse of such magazines as "Women's Herald" ("Zhenskiy Vestnik") and "Women's Union" ("Soyuz Zhenshchin"). These magazines were special "ideological" women's magazines of the early 1900s where new feminist ideology was being shaped and tested. It is stated that Russian lady-fighters for equal rights ("rivnopravky") have chosen the ideology of liberal feminism. However, there are some particular pieces of writing featured in the magazines that showed definite signs of "marxist", "radical" and "socialistic" feminism. It must be taken into account that the "woman question" encompassed a wide range of moral, ethical, socio-economic and political issues, though the key issue was attaining universal suffrage (the general voting right).Key words: "woman question"; feminism; "ideological" women's magazines; women's media; gender equality.
The main objective of the study is to determine the specificity of gender representation of violence against women in the Ukrainian Soviet press of the 1920s and 1930s. The methodology of our study combining discourse analysis with feminist criticism. In the texts of the media of the 1920s and 1930s, the problem of sexual violence was interpreted in line with communist ideology. In order to publicize the fact of rape in Soviet newspapers, it was necessary for the crime to meet a number of ideological criteria, in particular the victim and the rapist had to be of the "right" class origin. Newspaper texts focused on the issue of sexual violence against women as an everyday occurrence in the USSR to exacerbate the class struggle against exploiters. In some publications, journalists carefully touched on the subject of sexual harassment by business executives, but it was not fully disclosed. In the early 1920s, under the conditions of Soviet rule, reports of sexual violence by White Army soldiers were printed with propaganda goals to create a demonized image of the enemy to gain the affection of the local population.I. Dubinsky's publications on the sexual military practices of the Red Army (the constant presence of a large number of «their» women in the Red Army during the Civil War, the rape of «foreign» women) were a bold exception to the general journalistic rule of concealing such information. In the 1930s, with the height of Stalin's terror, reports of sexual violence disappeared from the front pages of Ukrainian Soviet newspapers. But Soviet citizens were regularly informed of similar crimes in bourgeois countries.Research results. In our study we outline the main topics for further research of Ukrainian media discourse (sexual harassment at work, militarism and sexual violence), as well as the key issues of coverage of this social problem (marginalization and taboos, ideological involvement, bias, etc.).Conclusions. Thanks to journalistic technologies (framing, stereotyping, imposing of a class enemy ideologue on the image of a rapist, a kind of authorial intentionality, artistic means), the message about gender violence acquired the necessary ideological coloring. Thus, reports of sexual violence in the Ukrainian Soviet press were regarded by the communist authorities as an effective ideological weapon.Significance. Gender-sensitive journalism is only being implemented in modern Ukraine, so we consider these issues, including historical aspects, to be a topical and promising area of media studies.Key words: sexual violence; gender violence; rape, the press; propaganda, ideology.
One of the defining features of the ability of society to update, upgrade, transition from traditional to modern structure is the formation of women's activity in different areas. Today, social and cultural equality between men and women is a matter of equality of human existence. It is known that the position of woman in society represents the valid level of civilization of the one or another social community, and unmistakably reflects the level of commitment to the principles of humanism, equality and democracy by its members. By exposing to criticizm traditional patriarchal concept of socio-cultural development of mankind, modern feminism has put forward an alternativeto it, in which woman appears as an active and equal with men the subject of social process. Feminism is focused the main attention on the abolition and identifying of discriminatory practices to women, its main task is the liberation of women from restrictions imposed by the men, and providing them with equal opportunities in society. Therefore, the increasing of public attention to the important issues of social modernization – the emancipation of the individual, consciousness by the woman of her nature and opportunities, and also lively discussions and controversial assessments of these processes actualize the research of the formation and development of feminism as a theory and practice. In this article research interest is focused directly on the development and transformation of feminist ideas, concepts and movements in the context of sociological theorizing.Feminism having the almost two centuries history, as a theory and as a practice, is still continues to develop and transform. Having arisen in the XVIII century, for today feminism has not gained clear universally accepted definition. In the twentieth century feminism from the practice of social and political movement for the equal rights for women turned into a phenomenon of general cultural scale with expanded philosophical concept. At the end of the last century feminism has advocated for the revision of relations between genders because of radical changes in the living conditions of people that occurred under the influence of such factors as globalization, the spread of education, improving women's and men's consciousness, strengthening the legal and financial independence of women. In the modern stage the female factor is significant and requires a rethinking of the foundations of civilization. Therefore, in the third millennium to the fore come a fundamentally new issues determining the women's place in the modern society, without solution of which it is impossible a further human progress.
«The Theory of Justice» by John Rawls, being an «unfinished project», undergoes significant transformations related both to the general «postmodern situation» and to the political and economic processes of globalization, which determine the relevance of this article. The influence of socio-cultural, political and economic transformations of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries of Rawls׳ ideas was characterized in the article. The paper considers the changed context which is subjected to the influence of the political and economic processes of globalization. It is established that what is now called the «After Rawls» in Western theory reveals the following main areas of research: new interpretations of Rawls' fundamental concepts, the continuation of his dialogue with other scientific schools and the expansion of his political philosophy in the direction of both Western context and other national contexts of recent decades. The paper has also established that since we live in a world in which sex is always considered to be one of the most obvious reasons for establishing the legitimacy of various rights and restrictions and justice theory in its essence decides whether it is possible to treat people in different ways and why the appeal of the gender researchers to modern theories of justice is quite natural. The analysis of leading directions is presented: libertarianism, socialism, communitarianism, feminism. The article reveals that in this analysis with all the indicated differences – the general tendency is traced as for interpret in justice as a requirement of respect for the dignity of all people as free, equal, rational and moral individuals. The analysis of the works of scientists who represent a significant development of the ideas of classical Western philosophy has shown that those ideas dominate today in Western theories of justice. The article also reveals that at the beginning of the 21st century while developing a theory that includes women's experience and referring to issues associated with femininity gender researchers argue that at the level of generalizations feminist epistemology represents attempts of many oppressed groups to restore the value of their experience, thus achieving justice. The article notes that in the fundamental work of Rawls there is almost no indication that the modern liberal society, to which the principles of justice under discussion should be applied, is gender structured at all levels and in all spheres.
Problem setting. The functioning of the mechanism of public administration determines the need to establish the conceptual foundations of public policy, its strategic guidelines and directions for further development. There is no doubt about the social need for the humanization of consciousness, which is impossible without the introduction of the values of democracy and mutual respect in government. The relevance of modern gender research is due to the transformation of society, the emergence of new women's problems and the complication of existing ones, the need to understand the radical change in the position of women, strengthening and expanding the feminine principle in society. Thus, it is noticeable that in our time gender studies are especially relevant. All countries are faced with the task of developing a science-based policy on women. Without this, a realistic solution to many practical problems is impossible. Today, the women's issue is the focus of many social forces, it penetrates deeper into the consciousness of society and becomes a stimulus to social activity for both women and men.Recent research and publications analysis. At the present stage, Ukrainian researchers rely in their gender studies on the work of such Western authors as D. Butler, N.Khodorov, R. Bridotti, D. Dinerstein, D. Mitchell, E. Gross, K. Millet and S. de Beauvoir. In Russia, women's issues were developed by: A. Temkina, O. Zdravomyslova, O.Pushkareva.In Ukraine, the most famous are such researchers as I. Zherobkina, M. Alchuk, K.Karpenko, N. Chukhim and others. In Modern Ukraine, such researchers as Solomiya Pavlychko, Milena Rudnytska, Nila Zborovska, Maryana Rubchak and others have dealt with this issue.Highlighting previously unsettled parts of the general problem. Involving women in power and participating in politics (not just the right to vote) is the most important sign of a healthy democracy. Women's participation in politics is closing the gap that has so far prevented the formation of a truly democratic society and culture. And the parity of men and women in the adoption of state decisions is one of the prerequisites for democracy. Meanwhile, our women in positions of responsibility must constantly prove that they can act no worse than men, although at the same time they are forced to spend time caring for children and all housework.Paper main body. Realizing that humanity consists of two different but equal sexes, society must change its character in the public and private lives of men and women, because the worlds of public and private life are intertwined and interdependent. Now this balance is disturbed, women have en masse entered public life, but the organization of home life has not changed. This misunderstanding is based on the ancient tradition of neglecting the world of women and the unwillingness to bear some of the burden of women on the shoulders of men.Although scientific terminology is not yet fully established, so the words "gender" and "gender" and their derivatives are sometimes used interchangeably, their distinction is of fundamental importance. Gender is a natural physical phenomenon that allows for objective measurement. Gender is a historically, culturally determined category by which people group certain qualities, giving them a symbolic meaning. From all the above, the following worldview conclusions follow: the gender division of labor and norms of male and female behavior are not universal, but historically variable, they can and should be treated critically. The use of certain terms depends on the context. Thus, we see that the concept of "gender" means a complex socio-cultural process of society forming differences in male and female roles, behavior, mental and emotional characteristics, and the result itself - the social construct of gender.Modern gender theory does not try to deny the existence of certain biological, social, psychological differences between specific women and specific men. She argues that this fact of difference is not as important as her socio-cultural assessment, interpretation, and construction of a system of power based on these differences. Conclusions of the research and prospects for further studies. The Ukrainian intellectual space seeks to explore and use in socio-political practice the best achievements of world thought and civilization, among which a significant role belongs to gender studies, which are not losing popularity in the XXI century. acquiring new features and new meaning. Our state seeks to embody advanced democratic ideals, ensure the welfare of the people and the prosperity of the nation. And, as you know, a sign of culture and civilization of society is the attitude towards women, who in Ukraine are the majority of the population. Indeed, a democratic state cannot ignore the position and status of women in society, their right to self-affirmation in the private and public spheres, and the female voice in culture, politics, and society. The realities of today show the existence of serious problems in this area, and therefore the need for a thorough study of the situation of women in modern Ukraine. However, a significant part of Ukrainian society and even serious scholars are wary of feminist ideas, and sometimes hostile (as a danger to "real" women's interests, hatred of men or sexual dissatisfaction). It is feminism that offers a new alternative to women's choice, hard physical work or isolation in the private sphere and family responsibilities, and women need such an alternative not to make a choice without a choice, but to get all the opportunities of civilization. In this direction, feminism and gender studies are now humanizing the public consciousness. At the current stage of development of the civil service, it is necessary to develop mechanisms for implementing gender policy in the civil service, the formation and development of gender culture and gender education of civil servants of Ukraine.
