(DIPF/Orig.) ; The roots of Western school are to be found in the ecclesiastical tradition of conversion, later replaced by instruction. This approach "from above" does not conform with the demands of a pluralistic society, where personality should be individually developed rather than standardized. Schools can contribute to this enrichment only if they become a forum of non-hierarchical encounters between generations and cultures where views of the world are negotiated rather than prescribed. The conception of "Looking Across the Hedge", an association of more than 100 reform schools, is presented as an example. (DIPF/Orig.)
this study presents the methods of individual and collective identification before the Civil and Criminal Justice Courts of the Niedermal District Court in Homs, through the records of hearings covering the years 1886 to 1919. Administrators and administrators, court staff, witnesses, informants and many others must be identified or identify themselves. On the eve of the civil status organised by the Law of 14 October 1890, reporting to the court appears to be a well-defined task; however, some variations or differences in the form and choice of the elements of identification make it possible to question the local application of Ottoman legislation. ; International audience Personal identification at the dawn of the Ottoman Registry (nufûs): litigants before the civil court of Homs (central Syria) in late nineteenth century. This article is based on the records of hearings between 1886 and 1919 before the civil court and the criminal justice court of first intance (niẓâmî) of Homs. It presents the different modes of identification for individuals and groups. Administrators, subjects, court personnel, witnesses, informants and others must identify themselves or be identified. After the creation of the Registry Office (Law of October 14, 1890), introducing oneself before the court became a set of well-defined procedures. However, some differences in form and choice of personal identification components allow us to consider how Ottoman legal system was locally applied. ; this study presents the methods of individual and collective identification before the Civil and Criminal Justice Courts of the Niedermal District Court in Homs, through the records of hearings covering the years 1886 to 1919. International audience Like the knowledge that historians have of all peoples on the fringes (Beduin, Turk, Berber) of the Islamic world, what is known about the Kurds during the medieval period suffers from a monolithic vision that sees far-off places as being "all the same": tribalism, nomadism, castes. The economic and social organization of the land of the Kurds from the 9th to the 15th century is described. A paradigm of the "in-between" prevails geographically, socially, economically and politically. It has given rise to a still existing frontier culture specific to the Kurdish people. By asserting their sovereignty and differences, the tribes and emirs during the Middle Ages helped create a distinct Kurdish space.

One consequence of demographic change is a longer average remaining lifetime after retirement. Many people, however, remain able and willing to continue work after reaching the statutory retirement age. Given the predicted shortage of skilled workers in the future, post-retirement activities have the potential to contribute to both organisations and society. This article elaborates the prerequisites for productivity in retirement age and the changed nature of retirement at present. It also quantifies the extent to which activities are continued at retirement age. Paid employment still occurs beyond the applicable retirement age, whereby with increasing age, self-employed persons and assistant family members make up the lion's share of the statistics. An empirical study shows the concrete situation of active retirees and the prerequisites for post-retirement activities. At the explorative level, individual experiences of the transition into retirement, the reasons for and the framework of post-retirement activities, motivational factors in job design, and physical and intellectual demands before and after retirement are characterised. The qualitative data indicate that retirement entails changes towards more flexible structures in everyday life. Decisive reasons for taking up post-retirement activities are the desire to help, pass on knowledge or remain active; personal development and contact with others; and gaining appreciation and recognition. Flexible job design and freedom to make decisions constitute major elements in shaping post-retirement working activities. Offering autonomy, skill variety, and task significance is important for the design of post-retirement activities. The paper closes with identifying relevant research fields and the concrete need to take action at individual, organisational, and societal levels. All in all, the transition from working life to retirement should be made flexible enough to do greater justice to the realities of life.
