Santos Julia's book, Historias de las Dos Espanas (Histories of the Two Spains), covers the role of Spanish intellectuals & their historical context within Basque, Catalonian, & other Spanish nationalisms. The book leaves one with an appreciation of the cultural & ideological complexity of the formation of Catalonian nationalism, the contribution of Catalonian nationalism to the formation of an organized civil society in Spain, the social ambivalence of support of the monarchy, attitudes toward Islam, & the Jewish elements of Spain's past. In the book, it becomes clear to the reader that women did not erupt into Spanish intellectual & political life until the 20th century within the anti-Franco camp. Santos Julia's work is compared to that of Jose Alvarez Junco's Mater Dolorosa (The Suffering Mother), & the political climate for women prior to the 20th century as detailed in Pi i Margall's Las Luchas de Nuestros Dias (1882, The Conflicts of Our Times)is discussed. Other critiques of Santos Julia's book are cited. M. Pflum
