Pakistan has just more than half as many people as the United States but if the U.S. stopped accepting new international immigrants, at Pakistan's current rate, it will surpass the United States in population within 20 years. Pakistan is one of the world's most rapidly growing countries with an annual population growth rate of 2.4 percent. This rate of growth results in a doubling of a population every 30 years. Pakistan's population was a mere 32.5 million people when it won independence in 1947. In the sixty years since independence its population increased by more than 120 million to reach 166 million people. The current rate of growth for the United States, which is influenced by movement of a large number of people into the country, yields a doubling time of 120 years. For the U.S. and Pakistan, persistence of these same rates of population growth for 115 years would result in a staggering population of more than 2 billion for Pakistan At that time Pakistan would have a population that is 3.3 times that of the United States.

Population aging is primarily the result of past declines in fertility, which produced a decadeslong period in which the ratio of dependents to working age adults was reduced. Rising old-age dependency in many countries represents the inevitable passing of this "demographic dividend." Societies use three methods to transfer resources to people in dependent age groups: government, family, and personal saving. In developed countries, families are predominant in supporting children, while government is the main source of support for the elderly. The most important means by which aging will affect aggregate output is the distortion from taxes to fund PAYGO pensions.

The Population Health Research Network (PHRN) is an Australian data linkage infrastructure capable of securely and safely linking and integrating data collections from a wide range of sources. It is an example of a national data linkage infrastructure in a country with a federated system of government. This population data centre profile describes Australia's unique approach to enabling access to linked data from single jurisdictions and from multiple jurisdictions. It covers the background to the establishment of the PHRN as well as information about how it operates today including operating models, governance, data, data linkage and data access. Some of the challenges of data linkage across jurisdictions are also discussed.

Research workers in the early 19th century endeavored to survey entire populations. This feat was tedious, and the research work suffered accordingly. Current researchers work only with a small portion of the whole population (a sample) from which they draw inferences about the population from which the sample was drawn. This inferential leap or generalization from samples to population, a feature of inductive or empirical research, can be full of pitfalls. In clinical medicine, it is not sufficient merely to describe a patient without assessing the underlying condition by a detailed history and clinical examination.The signs and symptoms are then interpreted against the total background of the patient's history and clinical examination including mental state examination. Similarly, in inferential statistics, it is not enough to just describe the results in the sample. One has to critically appraise the real worth or representativeness of that particular sample. The following discussion endeavors to explain the inputs required for making a correct inference from a sample to the target population. Use of the word population in epidemiological research does not correspond always with its demographic meaning of an entire group of people living within certain geographic or political boundaries. A population for a research study may comprise groups of people defined in many different ways, for example, coal mine workers in Dhanbad, children exposed to German measles during intrauterine life, or pilgrims traveling to Kumbh Mela at Allahabad.

Many regard the population census as the backbone of national statistics. It is also regarded as a national institution; a data source held in high regard by the academic, policymaker, historian and genealogist alike. However, technological advances, pressure on resources and the availability of alternative information about the demography of the population have led to a recent review of the census.The results of this review have led the UK to develop a population census that in future will be conducted online and augmented by data derived from other government sources, for example, health and social care records, without the need for explicit consent of the population. It is, therefore, an opportune time to build uponprevious studies relating to privacy and the census and examine the impact that these confirmed changes to the population census in the UK will have on public perceptions of the confidential nature of the census, with a particular focus on information security, privacy and ethics.This paper will discuss the results of a study examining public attitudes to an online census, information sharing between government agencies without explicit consent, and attitudes to private companies processing census data. After a particularly rapid demographic transition, Taiwan entered the post-transition period in the mid-1980s, with fertility below the generational replacement level. The world's population has grown rapidly from about 2.5 billion in 1950 to a current size of 5.8 billion. As noted in this report, most of the increase has been recorded in the developing countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America due to continued high fertility in the face of reductions in levels of mortality. Kenya provides a unique opportunity to study the impact of various policy options on future population growth. The primary objective of this study is to measure the impact of different causes of continued population growth on Kenya's future size and to formulate appropriate policy measures to minimize the adverse socioeconomic consequences of population growth. This study briefly reviews population policies pursued by the Kenyan government since the formulation of the first such policy in 1967. Projections made by the World Bank and the United Nations are summarized, and a new set of projections is presented to highlight the contributions of the different causes of future growth. The study concludes with policy implications emanating from this analysis.

This thesis compares and contrasts the portrayal of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) as presented by Egyptian intellectuals, using the newspapers as a medium, and the message disseminated by the ICPD. The primary objective of the thesis is to assess the validity of the concerns of some of the arguments put forth by the Egyptian intellectuals by reference to an analytical discussion of these issues within a global debate as well as concurrent debates within Egypt. Locating these concerns in both the Egyptian and global contexts will identify the nature of the controversy and enable the thesis to present a critical account of these debates. The thesis' selection of the ICPD as a case study serves as a gateway into a multitude of complex relationships and debates that have shaped the population discourse historically as well as those that determine them in the contemporary period. An analysis and comparison between the views of some of the Egyptian intellectuals writing in newspapers and the themes that ICPD put forth about itself in its publications is done to bring to the surface the different types of vocabularies on population. A deconstruction of such languages on population reveals the different types of political power dynamics (in terms of alliances between different groups and governments) that create what appear to be two different - not necessarily opposing - discourses on population. Thus, an examination of the various arguments and reactions towards the ICPD's Final Program of Action, put forth by both media sources, as well as references to arguments that have been neglected by both, is done in order to raise the question pertaining to how far we can call the ICPD a successful conference, as well as what can be expected of global conferences on population in the future.
