"Tens of thousands of children have been born worldwide as a result of mass rape campaigns or wartime sexual exploitation. What about these living legacies of rape and sexual violence? What do we know about these children and their life chances? This book brings together researchers and practitioners from around the globe, each of whom has spent decades working with women who survived wartime rape and with their children who were the result of that violence. Together the authors rethink some of the assumptions that echo in the literature, policy, practice and popular culture about these children and those around them. This ground-breaking collection is composed of four thematic sections. Section one brings together contributions that explore the "Life cycles of children born of wartime rape across time and space." Section two, "Beyond stigma: Gender, kinship and belonging in northern Uganda," draws upon complementary studies to investigate the complexities of why young people born of rebel rape are or are not able rejoin their families and communities in the post-conflict period. What did politics and public affairs mean to those generations of Americans who first experienced democratic self-rule? Taking their cue from vibrant political campaigns and very high voter turnouts, historians have depicted the nineteenth century as an era of intense and widespread political enthusiasm. But rarely have these historians examined popular political engagement directly, or within the broader contexts of day-to-day life. In this bold and in-depth look at Americans and their politics, Glenn Altschuler and Stuart Blumin argue for a more complex understanding of the "space" occupied by politics in nineteenth-century American society and culture. Mining such sources as diaries, letters, autobiographies, novels, cartoons, contested-election voter testimony to state legislative committees, and the partisan newspapers of representative American communities ranging from Massachusetts and Georgia to Texas and California, the authors explore a wide range of political actions and attitudes. They consider the enthusiastic commitment celebrated by historians together with various forms of skepticism, conflicted engagement, detachment, and hostility that rarely have been recognized as part of the American political landscape. "Established by King Carlos III in 1787, the Junta de Damas de Honor y Mérito is the oldest feminine, secular, philanthropic association in Spain. During the early decades of its existence, the Junta de Damas instituted a series of innovative reforms and scientific experiments as they ran Madrid's foundling hospital, women's prison, and schools for impoverished women and children. Society Women and Enlightened Charity in Spain presents the Junta de Damas as an important, understudied chapter in the history of women's accession to the public sphere, both in Spain and in the wider context of the Enlightenment. An interdisciplinary collaboration between historians and literary scholars in Spain and the United States, this collection provides the first book-length, comprehensive study of the early years of the Junta de Damas. It makes available for the first time in English a holistic account of the early decades of the organization, from its creation in 1787, through the Napoleonic invasion in 1808 and the traumatic years of the Peninsular War, until 1823, when King Felipe VII reestablished absolutism in Spain. In thirteen essays, alongside additional contextual materials, the book situates the Junta de Damas within modern feminist discourses that arose during the Enlightenment and considers its legacy to feminist thought and benevolence in the early liberal era. Biographical sketches highlight the lives of important members of the Junta de Damas, including aristocrats whose portraits were painted by Goya, along with others who dwelled in relative obscurity. Contributors analyze how the Junta de Damas contributed collectively to women's education and helped redefine the spaces of women's charity, as well as how individual members contributed as authors to the Republic of Letters or fashioned portraits that circulated publicly to project the ideal of the enlightened woman.
