Magazines of the Embassy of the UNR in Sofia: Tool of Ukraine's Promotion in Bulgaria ;
The article is devoted to the study of magazines of the UNR embassy in Sofia. The thesis is substantiated that for the first Ukrainian diplomats, an important mission was the separation in the minds of the Bulgarians of Ukraine from Russia, to which the Bulgarian people felt some sentiment through assistance in the struggle for independence. Thus, the first Ukrainian diplomats faced a difficult task: to present the identity of the young Ukrainian state and ensure its recognition in the international arena. The article emphasizes that feeling the need to be independent in their work from the editorial policy of some Bulgarian publications and the need to respond promptly to developments in and around Ukraine, Ukrainian diplomats decided to publish a non-periodic magazine "Ukrainsko Slovo" ("Ukrainian Word"), which preceded the biweekly magazine "Ukrainian-Bulgarian Review". All issues of "Ukrainsko Slovo" magazine published reviews of recent events in Ukraine, reports on the most important publications of the foreign press on Ukrainian topics, news on "diplomatic life", confirmation of the recognition of the UPR's independence by foreign governments, and others. It was outlined that the editorial board of the "Ukrainian-Bulgarian Review" magazine aimed to thoroughly inform Bulgarians about the history, culture, and literature of Ukraine, to spread the opinion of authoritative Bulgarian poets and writers about Ukrainian-Bulgarian relations. In addition, in the conditions of insufficient attention of the Bulgarian mass media to the Ukrainian issue, the volume of the news block increased. It turned out that the diplomats of the UPR embassy resorted to the idea of publishing their magazine as a way of mass communication with Bulgarian society. "Ukrainian-Bulgarian Review" can be considered a prototype of modern Internet pages of diplomatic missions and Facebook accounts, given the similarity of goals and objectives facing modern public and cultural diplomacy as part of it. It is concluded that the magazine "Ukrainian-Bulgarian Review" is a unique source for interdisciplinary research on relations between the Ukrainian People's Republic, which fought for the establishment of its statehood, and the Kingdom of Bulgaria, whose leadership was ready to support the young country in a difficult geopolitical situation in Europe after the end of the First World War. An in-depth analysis of the magazine's publications content will allow modern researchers to better understand this period of Ukrainian-Bulgarian intercultural relations, as well as the origins of official public diplomacy between Ukraine and Bulgaria.
