Fragestellung: Positive Effekte tiergestützter Therapie (TGT) auf Patienten sind belegt. Die vorliegende Studie geht der Frage nach, ob auch Substanzabhängige im stationären Drogenentzug von TGT profitieren und sich unmittelbare Effekte auf die emotionale Befindlichkeit und das subjektive Craving zeigen lassen. Methode: 26 Patienten (ICD-10: F11.2; F12.2, Alter:18 – 65 Jahre) wurden in der randomisiert-kontrollierten Studie im Cross-Over-Design untersucht und in Gruppe A und B aufgeteilt. Gruppe A erhielt zuerst das Interventionsangebot (Spaziergänge mit Hund) und dann das Kontrollangebot (Spaziergänge ohne Hund), bei Gruppe B wurde umgekehrt verfahren. Vor und nach jeder Intervention wurden die emotionale Befindlichkeit und das Craving der Probanden erfasst. Außerdem wurde über den Studienzeitraum hinweg die globale psychopathologische Symptombelastung der Patienten ermittelt. Ergebnisse: Es konnten signifikant stärkere prä-/post-Veränderungen unter der Interventionsbedingung mit Hund im Vergleich zu ohne Hund auf die emotionale Befindlichkeit und eine tendenziell signifikant ausgeprägtere Verringerung des Cravings nach der Intervention mit Hund aufgezeigt werden. Im Studienverlauf reduzierte sich die globale psychopathologische Symptombelastung deutlich, hier fanden sich keine hundespezifischen Effekte. Schlussfolgerung: Es ergeben sich erste Hinweise darauf, dass substanzabhängige Patienten im akutpsychiatrischen Drogenentzug kurzfristig von TGT mit einem Hund profitieren.

Background: To date, there has been little research into effective strategies for preventing the detrimental effects of stigma on the well-being of people with mental illness. Aim: The present research set out to identify adaptive strategies for dealing with the stigma of mental illness. Methods: On the basis of the responses of 355 people with mental illness (PWMI) a standardized questionnaire assessing 10 identity management strategies was developed. Participants also reported their personal experiences with stigma, depression and self-esteem. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses showed that after controlling for depression and stigmatizing experiences, the strategies of community involvement, humour and positive ingroup stereotyping were related to higher self-esteem. Secrecy, selective disclosure and attempts at overcompensation or disproving stereotypes were related to lower self-esteem. The following strategies were unrelated to self-esteem: comparing the present social position of PWMI with that in the past, normalization of the illness within a medical model, information seeking and selective withdrawal. Conclusions: PWMI should be encouraged to seek support within their community and to develop a positive image of their ingroup.

Abstract

Background
On-road driving skills can be impaired in older drivers and drivers with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to different driving-relevant deficits. Among these deficits, somatic factors have received little attention so far.


Methods
In a prospective observational on-road driving study, we examined whether somatic factors can predict on-road driving skills in a mixed sample of healthy older drivers and drivers with MCI (n = 99) and whether the inclusion of age explains additional variance. Somatic factors included the number of prescribed drugs, visual acuity, peripheral visual field integrity, mobility of the cervical spine, and hearing impairment. A hierarchical regression analysis was used to predict on-road driving skills by adding the somatic factors in the first step and age in the second step.


Results
Results revealed that the combination of somatic factors significantly predicted on-road driving skills (R2adjusted = 0.439). The inclusion of age led to a significant increase of explained variance (R2adjusted = 0.466).


Conclusions
Our results suggest that somatic factors can accurately predict on-road driving skills in healthy older drivers and drivers with MCI. In addition, our results suggest that there is a significant but rather small effect of age beyond somatic changes.
