Depuis 2000 la mission archéologique française aux Émirats arabes unis tente de reconstituer les stratégies d'adaptation et l'organisation territoriale des communautés de l'âge du fer des régions montagneuses de l'Émirat de Fujairah, en effectuant des fouilles et des prospections dans plusieurs régions. À Masafi, un bâtiment collectif et un temple ont été fouillés, et un habitat fortifié a été mis en évidence sur une colline rocheuse. Les fouilles et les études environnementales permettent d'esquisser une première image d'un territoire de l'âge du fer construit autour d'un terroir agricole irrigué central, défendu par une forteresse établie sur une colline rocheuse, et placé sous la protection d'un dieu représenté sous la forme d'un serpent.
