In the last decade, historians studying Britain's relations with the self-governing settlement empire (the dominions) have emphasized the role of shared culture and dense networks in shaping what Bridge and Fedorowich have called the "British world." Recent scholarship has begun to discern a political life within this British world, at times resurrecting the term Greater Britain. This article builds on these developments through research on a neglected pan-imperial institution: the Congress of Chambers of Commerce of the Empire. The article shows that the Congress, which was dominated by chambers from Britain and the dominions, acted primarily as a business lobby seeking to shape aspects of pan-imperial economic governance. This conclusion highlights the need to place greater emphasis on patterns of politics and governance within the British World (or Greater Britain).

It is often asserted that, between 1865 and 1914, economic dependence on British capital subjected settler societies to an unofficial imperialism wielded by the City of London. This article argues that both advocates and critics of such models, particularly in the recent controversy over 'gentlemanly capitalism', pay insufficient attention to the City itself. Using the Edwardian City's connections with Australia and Canada, it illustrates the range of financial intermediaries involved and explores their perceptions of political economy in these countries. It concludes that the City's influence (or 'structural power') was limited by its internal divisions and hazy conceptions of political economy.

In Finance, Politics and the Dominions, Andrew Dilleyoffers a major new contribution to the history of British imperialism and of the 'British World'. Drawing on a considerable range of archival, press, and other contemporary sources, he uses a comparative approach to highlight the ways in which dependence on London finance shaped political life in Australia and Canada between 1896 and 1914, and shows how these impacts were in turn shaped by the processes of economic development in these settler capitalist societies. Deploying an innovative combination of economic, business, political, and cultural history, his studythrows new light onto debates about gentlemanly capitalism, and the cultural economy of the British world. It offers fresh insights into the history of the City of London, and into Anglo-Dominion relations, and Australian and Canadian politics, and more broadly, insists on the importance of political economy in the history of the British empire.
