This book investigates how the changed agricultural policy climate affected government policies in the nine countries studied already as part of the preceding project: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. By repeating the cross-sectional survey made in over 100 villages in 2002 and converting it into a panel, it is possible to trace village- and household-level effects of agricultural policies and other macro-level processes. The book consists of 14 chapters most of which revolve around studies on each of the nine case study countries.

A comparative study between Asian agricultural development during the Green Revolution in food production and the current problematic agricultural situation in sub-Saharan Africa is presented. Case studies of eight African (viz. Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia) and seven Asian (Japan, Taiwan, Korea Republic, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh) countries (focusing on the early part of the Green Revolution) are also presented. A causal and explanatory model of Asian green revolutions is presented, as well as a discussion on why this phenomenon occurred in Asia and not in Africa. This book will be of significant interest to researchers on agricultural economics, rural sociology and development studies.

This is a review article of Michael Kearney's Reconceptualizing the peasantry: Anthropology in a global perspective. The article argues that Kearney is right on one score: the peasantry needs to be reconceptualized, and has long needed reconceptualization, since the very term 'peasant' is ethnocentric amd since it is too easily coupled with an evolutionist or modernist research programme. Rural sociology would do better with an analytical model of family farming as a core concept. Such a concpet would open up for comparative and historical studies of agrarian (and non‐agrarian) societies, and would hopefully help us to systematize what we already know about farmers worldwide. To argue, as Kearney does, that peasants must exit as 'ploybians' enter the historical scene is misplaced and mistaken on a number of counts. It is misplaced methodologically, because it means committing what the author terms the epochal fallacy. It is mistaken empirically, because pluriactivity in various forms, including seasonal migration, has long been a feature of agrarian societies.

This is a study of landlordism, agricultural labourers, and the State of Andalusia in southern Spain. This region, a classical case of landlordism, deviates from the typically West European agrarian structure dominated by the family farm. Andalusia's history centers on the conflict over land between a majority of landless peasants and a minority of powerful landlords, which was one of the main causes of the Spanish civil war. This study deals with two periods covering nearly fifty years of this latifundist system and its conflictridden relations of production. It examines the freezing of the agrarian structure for nearly forty years by the dictatorship of Francisco Franco and the adaptation of social and agrarian policy for the next ten years by the socialists. In other words, this is the story of how the agricultural laborers of Andalusia were transformed in less than one-half century from "peasants without land" to "clients of the welfare state" dependent on the social policies of the state.

The classical conception of the development of capitalism in agriculture maintains that, as in industry, the agrarian class-structure will tend to polarize, the petty commodity producer will tend to disappear, and a capitalist relation of production will develop between an agrarian bourgeoisie and a rural proletanat. Farms will be big estates, managed by capitahst farmers, run with machinery and landless labourers. This con ception has proved to be unjustified. The classics of Marxism are discus sed in order to find out the assumptions underlying this conception of agricultural development. The findings are used in a discussion of the prospects of a development in accordance with the classical conception in contemporary peripheral agriculture.
