Americans are repeatedly told they can achieve financial success and personal well-being by adopting a motivated attitude toward work. But where did this obsession come from? And whose interests does it serve? Work Better, Live Better traces the rise of motivational rhetoric in the workplace across the expanse of two world wars, the Great Depression, and the Cold War. Beginning in the early twentieth century, managers recognized that force and coercion-the traditional tools of workplace discipline-inflamed industrial tensions, so they sought more subtle means of enlisting workers' cooperation. John Hewitt's claim to 'no female bards' as part of the revival of what he called the rhyming weaver poets tradition narrowed the scope of scholarly interest, just as the once popular claim that many of the writers in this tradition were simply Robert Burns imitators had done. A variety of publications have provided a range of in-depth studies on the impact of Robert Burns in Ireland, and have done much to challenge the latter claim. However, the presence and output of Ulster-Scots women writers within this wider area of scholarship remains little known. Consequently, by exploring poetry from three writers, Olivia Elder, Sarah Leech and Margaret Dixon McDougall, this essay aims to advance several lesser-known eighteenth and nineteenth-century female Irish poets, add depth to the study of Ulster-Scots women's writing, and provide new perspectives on Burns in Ireland.

Using a Pesaran-Timmermann test of co-movement, Cook and Watson (Cook S and Watson D, 2015, A new perspective on the ripple effect in the UK housing market: Co-movement, cyclical subsamples and alternative indices. Urban Studies 53(14): 3048–3062) suggest they have highlighted the 'ripple' effect. Using reference series of the UK, London, Scotland and three deterministic-periodic series, regional prices are shown to have similar cyclical characteristics, with delays based on distance from London. With periodicities consistent with those revealed by spectral analysis, the deterministic-periodic series reference provides a means of establishing cyclical characteristics whilst avoiding issues concerning variable amplitudes. Although a ripple is revealed, using London as a reference poses problems empirically: its cycle is likely to be atypical as well as asynchronised.

The work makes two contributions to Hui's (2011) dynamic house price classification. First, a house price ripple in cycles from Modern to Older dwellings is revealed and, second, as New housing is shown to have lower volatility than the other two. Using spectral analysis, it is argued that there is a 7½-year repeat buyer-second-hand cycle and a five year, first time buyer-New housing cycle, common to three house price vintages. These cycles reinforce each other every fifteen years, which corresponds with a Minsky super-cycle in housing finance. The equity of the owner-occupier is fortified by higher house prices whereas new builds extract embedded equity from the market. Government should support builders and facilitate access to market to first time buyers and through programmes like Help-to-Buy 1. However, to address the greater price instability that should follow, Government should impose a capital gains tax on the house seller.

Using exploratory spatial data analysis and house price data from local authority districts in England and Wales, this article considers whether a regional ripple effect can be tracked at the district level. Although spatial house price variation has been explored at a sub-regional level, this is possibly the first paper to attempt to track house price spillover between districts on a national basis. High- and low-growth clusters of areas are traced. It is concluded that spatial spillover of house price growth is unlikely to be based on interlocked markets bonded by commuting or migration alone; information flows and expectations are likely to reinforce interdistrict transmission. Specifically, house price spillover north of the East Midlands appears much more rapid than would be consistent with a 'ripple', suggesting that there is some support for undertaking British housing market analysis on a spatially segmented basis, even at a regional level.

Mit Hilfe der Berechnung von Irrtum korrigierenden Modellen der britischen Erwerbslosenraten und der Durchführung von Grangerschen Testen zur Bestimmung von Ursachen wird festgestellt, daß zur Zeit, und auf kurzfristige Sicht, das westliche Mittelland das führende Gebiet in einer fest zusammengewachsenen Gruppe es umgebender Regionen darstellt. Hierbei wird zwischen Kernregion und führender Region unterschieden, und damit nahegelegt, daß der Südosten als Kernregion eine Mitmacherregion ist, die auf wirtschaftliche Schwankungen reagiert und sie vergrößert. Die politischen Implikationen laufen darauf hinaus, daß gegenwärtige regionale Einteilungen nicht unbedingt mit den Anforderungen wirtschaftlichen Zusammenhalts auf gesamtstaatlicher Ebene übereinstimmen und daher nicht die bestmöglichen für die Inkraftsetzung einer dezentralisierten räumlichen Wirtschaftspolitik sind. In der Tat, da wirtschaftliche Organisation an der Peripherie hoher Erwerbslosigkeit Konsequenzen für die wohlhabenderen Gebiete nach sich zieht, könnte es besser sein, Ortsbehörden nicht allzu viel Autorität zuzugestehen, da destabilisierende Tendenzen, nicht nur dem ganzen System die Dezentralisierung auferlegen, sondern auch die Vorteile einer besseren wirtschaftlichen Konzentration aufwiegen könnten.
