Sustainable development and peace: a study in sociological theory
"This book explores the growing attention that sociology has started to give to environmental issues in terms of peace and social justice. With a focus on sociological theory and its development, it reconstructs the long journey made by the social sciences towards the reconstruction, in a single theoretical paradigm, of the problems associated with the implementation of conditions of peace and sustainability. Beginning from the premise that environmental issues are never purely environmental, but entail political, economic and social implications, Sustainable Development and Peace offers an understanding of where we are heading, and how, reflecting on present challenges and possible directions for the future. It will therefore appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, development studies, politics and environmental studies"--
Pathways of peace: the philosophy and sociology of peace and nonviolence
This book explores the close interconnection that exists between sociological and philosophical scholarship in relation to peace studies. Through an examination of the thought of nine leading philosophers and sociologists in their historical and geographical context, the author considers notions of nonviolent resistance, pacifism and reverse strike, as well as violence theories of conflict, theories of conflict resolution, the problem of war, and political transitions towards democratization. Engaging with the work of Thoreau, Gandhi, Ghaffar Khan, Capitini, Dolci, Bobbio, Galtung, Sharp and Weil, and considering the institutionalisation of peace research, this volume will appeal to scholars and students of sociology, politics and philosophy with interest in peace and security studies, and conflict.
Poised Between Order and Conflict: What Future for the Smart City?
In: Società Mutamento Politica: SMP ; rivista di sociologia, Band 14, Heft 28, S. 103-112
ISSN: 2038-3150
The aim of this study is to reflect on how the longstanding contradiction between order and conflict in urban contexts is now articulated in the context of smart cities. Apparently, smart cities are the best place to live in order to enjoy greater capacity for choice, self-determination, well-being and independence. But is this really the case? Are smart cities and their technological drift towards increasingly wider spaces of order and control really able to guarantee wide spaces of freedom? What role does or can conflict play? Through the analysis of various case studies (Qatar, China and Ukraine), we will try to improve our understanding of the dichotomous relationship between order and conflict both from an internal perspective within the city and from an external perspective (i.e. when attacks from outside occur). The study will proceed through a preliminary analysis of the state of the art on the smart city literature in order to grasp what are the "promises" that this model of development brings with it and the criticalities connected to its development. At a later stage, we will proceed to focus on issues related to the problems of social order and conflict both from an internal and external perspective.

The theme of sustainable development is an extremely interdisciplinary field of research where biological, engineering, political, economic and social studies are reconnected in a future-oriented cognitive proposal. The aim of this intellectual effort is to give proper attention to the link between peace economics and sustainable development. Although neglected for a long time, the link we highlight here represents such a central point that, if we want to investigate sustainable development from a sociological point of view, we cannot ignore its epistemological nexuses between sociology and peace economics. This means that the perspective from which to address the problem of the implementation of sustainable also changes.

The Mutation of Albanian Society During the Economic Transition from Communism to Liberalism
; The purpose of this essay is to give an overview of the Albanian social mutation during the transition period. The article begins with an explanation of the reasons why the researcher preferred to speak about social "mutation" instead of social "change" in this particular case and follows by analysing the purely economic instruments adopted during the first phase of the transition. Subsequently, the focus is placed on the criticalities of the 1997 crisis and the international rise in awareness that a systemic transformation of a country cannot take place on a strictly economic basis but needs both social and political measures.

The Pandemic and Sustainable Peace. A combination yet to be understood
In: Salute e società, Band 22, Heft 1, S. 116-134
ISSN: 1972-4845
This essay aims to verify the existing combination of low levels of sustainable peace and the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The hypothesis we want to support is that the aforementioned panemic wouldn't have become a world crisis had there been greater investments in social and environmental issues, which are the sources of sustainable peace. The applied methodology is preceded by a brief description of the different meanings of and the interdependencies between sustainable development and peace, a reflection on the main reports, both national (Italian Min-istry of Health, Italian National Statistical Institute) and international (UN, UNPD, IMF, WHO, IEP) and a quantitative supplementary analysis of their guidelines insofar as pandemic-related sustainability and sustainable peace are concerned. Our goal is to prove how much needed and no longer deferrable is a reading able to reconcile factors that are different from each other when it comes to their nature and content. Such factors are environmental pollution, climate change, cultural and structural violence, inequalities within individual States and be-tween States.
