The article analyses heritage conservation and urban upgrading in Cuenca, Ecuador, in order to reflect on global inequality and rights to the city at the crossroads of transnational lifestyle mobilities and the globalisation of real estate markets. Processes of gentrification in Cuenca reproduce colonial social relations and marginalise the popular economic activities of informal vendors. Under the auspices of UNESCO World Heritage designation, the Inter-American Development Bank and successive municipal governments have sought to increase property values in the historic El Centro neighbourhood. Rather than relying on a local middle-class return to the city, heritage urban upgrading in Cuenca is dependent on higher-income global middle classes attracted to the city's historic urbanism. The subsequent higher-income appropriation of urban improvements takes the form of dispossession of use and exchange values of lower-income groups, especially of informal vendors.
Avec la montée des dettes publiques, il est devenu évident que la présente crise économique peut être mieux comprise comme étant une crise sociale qui s'exprime par le biais du système financier. L'article présente des statistiques sur la distribution du revenu au Canada, aux États-Unis et en Grande-Bretagne afin de démontrer la transformation inégalitaire des relations de classes sociales due en grande partie à la surproduction et à l'excès de capacité productive du système capitaliste actuel. Le consensus politique face à la crise économique prolongera la tendance vers des relations sociales plus inégalitaires, marquant une donne inconnue depuis les années 1940 dans les pays développés du Nord Global. L'article trace trois directions possibles pour le futur développement de cette tendance dans la plupart des pays du Nord : 1) la tendance est exacerbée, puis on voit l'émergence de nouvelles pratiques politiques visant à gérer les effets d'une société plus inégalitaire ; 2) la tendance est contrée par le renouvellement des mouvements sociaux pour une distribution plus équitable de la survaleur sociale ; ou 3) la tendance débloque sur un nouveau compromis entre classes sociales comme celui des années 1940, solution qui se heurte à d'importantes contradictions conjoncturelles.
By drawing on a Marxist perspective, the author ventures into an interpretation of the current economic crisis. The author suggest that the crisis is rooted in a long term process of radical transformation in the North Atlantic countries's class relations. In particular, he maintains that the composition of classes existent in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century-relatively egalitarian, has changed due to broad transformations in the economies of the North Atlantic. The result has been the deterioration of those economies's capacity to compete in the global economy, and increasing social inequality. ; El artículo es un análisis de la crisis económica que mira hacia sus efectos sobre las relaciones de clase social. Se comprueba que la desigualdad ha crecido de manera importante en Norte América y Gran Bretaña en la época neoliberal, y se sugiere que, desde la perspectiva del consenso político actual, la tendencia se agudiza. El posible efecto sobre el orden social poscrisis y su impacto sobre la política, están en discusión.
Drawing from ethnographic research and interviews with older North American women who migrated alone to retire in Ecuador, this article grows the body of literature on gender and ageing, examining how these women position themselves within a gender-ageing nexus, contradicting certain gender norms in their attempt to obtain later-life self-fulfilment. Particularly, we examine how this group positions the third age as a time of individual adventure and self-actualisation, challenging normative gender ideals about femininity and care but meeting (many) social expectations to "age well." We argue that the lifestyles of these women demonstrate new experiments with gendered ageing, facilitated by global inequalities but challenging some normative ideals around femininity and old(er) age.
La financiarización de la vivienda es central para comprender el desarrollo urbano y los procesos de gentrificación transnacional en el Sur Global. La ciudad de Cuenca es un caso emblemático, debido a sus altos niveles de gentrificación y de población migrante. Por un lado, "Gringolandia", un barrio central poblado por jubilados norteamericanos con precios crecientes; por el otro, las remesas provenientes de la histórica emigración desde el sur del Ecuador, invertidas en la construcción en partes claves de la ciudad. Ambos fenómenos han generado una burbuja inmobiliaria con viviendas casi inaccesibles a población local. En base a un extenso trabajo etnográfico (2011-2020), este artículo argumenta que la vivienda en Cuenca está siendo apropiada por grupos transnacionales con más poder adquisitivo. Este proceso ha sido fomentado por políticas basadas en la financiarización de la vivienda y titulización de hipotecas, en base al aprovechamiento de las remesas y ahorros de jubilados norteamericanos.
