Carl Jonas Love Almqvist, l'un des grands auteurs du XIXe siècle suédois, publia, en 1838, un essai qu'il intitulait Valeur et portée de la pauvreté suédoise2. Il apportait ainsi une contribution assez curieuse à la discussion que soulevait la question sociale la plus brûlante de l'époque. Almqvist s'y efforce de saisir le caractère national suédois et sa thèse revient, en substance, à ceci : ce qui donne aux Suédois leur situation à part, c'est qu'ils sont pauvres. Mais cette pauvreté, poursuit Almqvist, « cette dot qu'ils ont reçue de la nature », est plutôt une force qu'une faiblesse : il développe son thème en chantant les louanges du menu peuple, des paysans surtout qui ont appris l'art difficile d'être pauvres, et celles d'une nature ingrate.
