The number of referenda taking place in established democracies has been increasing, but oftentimes the use of referenda is controversial. This paper utilises two New Zealand national probability mail surveys collected before (2015; n = 901) and after (2016; n = 1350) the controversial flag change referendums initiated by Prime Minister John Key. We found that support for referenda increased from 54.5% in 2015 to 70.7% in 2016. We examined how demographics, party vote, political attitudes, and support for changing the flag related to change in support for referenda Younger age groups and those with moderate levels of education had larger increases in support for referenda. We did not find any evidence of 'loser effects' as National voters and flag change supporters were just as likely to increase in support for referenda as other voters and those opposing change, respectively. In summary, the results of this paper show that despite controversy, referenda have become more popular, especially among certain groups.

Objective and ApproachThe Kumanu Tāngata study investigates long-term health outcomes in male high-level rugby union players in New Zealand using the Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI), a comprehensive de-identified whole-population administrative research database. A historical register containing players active between 1950-2000 was linked to the IDI. Rugby players (n=12,861) were compared to general population males (n=2,385,690), matched by age, ethnicity, and birthplace, on neurodegenerative disease outcomes from health records available between 1988-2018. Cox proportional hazards models were conducted.
ResultsRugby players exhibited a higher neurodegenerative disease incidence (4.7%) than the general population (3.9%). Players had an increased risk of any neurodegenerative disease (1.17 [95% CI 1.08–1.27]), Alzheimer's disease (1.42 [95% CI 1.22–1.66]), and other dementias (1.16 [95% CI 1.05–1.27]). An increased risk of any neurodegenerative disease was observed for professional- or international-level play (HR 1.51 [95% CI 1.04–2.18]), six or more years of play (HR 1.32 [95% CI 1.15–1.50], and a backline playing position (HR 1.30 [95% CI 1.17–1.45]).
ConclusionsThe study indicates a small-to-moderate increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases for high-level rugby players in New Zealand when compared to the general population, with variations observed across play duration, level and position. Future research will examine additional health outcomes, including mortality, musculoskeletal conditions, and mental health disorders.
ImplicationsThis large-scale linkage study allows for a comprehensive examination of long-term health outcomes and enhanced statistical power than previous research. Findings have the potential to influence health policies and athlete care strategies in contact sports.

AbstractIt has been shown that lower birthweight is associated with lower IQ, but it remains unclear whether this association is causal or spurious. We examined the relationship between birthweight and IQ in two prospective longitudinal birth cohorts: a UK cohort of 1116 twin pairs (563 monozygotic [MZ] pairs), born in 1994–95, and a New Zealand cohort of 1037 singletons born in 1972–73. IQ was tested with the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children. Birthweight differences within MZ twin pairs predicted IQ differences within pairs, ruling out genetic and shared environmental explanations for the association. Birthweight predicted IQ similarly in the twin and nontwin cohorts after controlling for social disadvantage, attesting that the association generalized beyond twins. An increase of 1000 g in birthweight was associated with a 3 IQ point increase. Results from two cohorts add to evidence that low birthweight is a risk factor for compromised neurological health. Our finding that birthweight differences predict IQ differences within MZ twin pairs provides new evidence that the mechanism can be narrowed to an environmental effect during pregnancy, rather than any familial environmental influence shared by siblings, or genes. With the increasing numbers of low-birthweight infants, our results support the contention that birthweight could be a target for early preventive intervention to reduce the number of children with compromised IQ.
