Anläßlich des 30. Jahrestages der Unabhängigkeit Sansibars von der britischen Kolonialherrschaft schildern 5 Autoren Grundzüge der Entwicklung des Landes, das seit 1964 mit Tansania zu einer politischen Einheit verschmolzen ist. Die Beiträge beginnen mit dem Abdruck einer Rede des Präsidenten S. Amour zur 30-Jahr-Feier der Unabhängigkeit, in der er hauptsächlich die politische und sozioökonomische Entwicklung Sansibars in den letzten 3 Jahrzehnten skizziert. Dabei thematisiert er auch die unbefriedigende wirtschaftliche Situation des Landes und geht auf die politische Liberalisierung seit den 80er Jahren ein. Der sich anschließende Überblick H. Othmans über 200 Jahre ökonomische und politische Geschichte Sansibars hat seinen Schwerpunkt in der Darstellung der sozialen und politischen Kräfte zur Zeit des Kampfes um die Unabhängigkeit 1955-63. A. M. Babu setzt in seinem Beitrag kritische Akzente bei der Beurteilung der jüngeren Entwicklung Sansibars. Er sieht bei Staat und Verwaltung sowie in der politischen Dominanz des tansanischen Festlands über Sansibar eine Mitverantwortung für die wirtschaftliche Stagnation, zu deren Überwindung er Vorschläge unterbreitet. S. S. Hamad hinterfragt die aktuelle Situation der verfassungsmäßig garantierten Bürgerrechte auf Sansibar. M. Said wirft Fragen nach dem Hintergrund der Entstehung der Union zwischen Sansibar und Tansania auf. Er schildert die außenpolitische Orientierung der beiden Länder und befaßt sich mit den Rivalitäten der politischen Führung und der Rolle des ehemaligen tansanischen Präsidenten J. Nyerere. (DÜI-Ply)

Reflections on leadership in Africa: forty years after independence ; essays in honour of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere, on the occasion of his 75th birthday
Der Band vereinigt 14 Beiträge, die anlässlich des 75. Geburtstags von Julius Nyerere auf einer Konferenz in Dar es Salaam im Dezember 1997 gehalten wurden. Führung ("Leadership") in Afrika war das Thema der Konferenz, um diesen Gegenstand herum entwickeln die Redner Gedanken zu Afrikas Weg im 21. Jahrhundert, seinen wesentlichen Herausforderungen und Chancen, zu den Wirkungen der Globalisierung in Afrika, zur Bedeutung ethnischer Rivalitäten, zur Dynamik wirtschaftlicher und politischer Reformen, zum Einfluss des Neoliberalismus, zur Demokratie und der Stärkung der Zivilgesellschaft. Drei Beiträge (zu den Führungsqualitäten von Oliver Tambo, zu Globalisierung vs. Regionalisierung und zur neoliberalen Modernisierung) konzentrieren sich auf Südafrika. Tanzania's debt problem and the world economy
This volume consists of some of the papers presented at the national conference held in June 1989, sponsored by the Institute of Development Studies in Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's total external debt rose from US-$ 2543.8 million in 1980 to US-$ 4,000 million in 1987. Compared to the total value of export of goods and services over the same period, this represents an increase from 300 per cent in 1980 to 900 per cent in 1987. The authors of the conference papers attempt to present alternative solutions to the debt problem in the Third World

Tanzania: democracy in transition
This study is an analysis of the 1985 Tanzania General Elections. It examines constitutional changes which took place prior to the elections, the participation of the Islands Zanzibar and Pemba, and the contradictions inherent in the Election Manifesto. It also looks at the parallel campaigns, questions posed to the candidates and the disparity of the decisions of the various levels of the Party organs.
