"Black Women's Bodies and The Nation develops a decolonial approach to representations of black women's bodies within popular culture in the US, UK and the Caribbean. It focuses on the racialization and affective load of muscle, bone, fat and skin through the trope of the subaltern figure of the Sable-Saffron Venus as an 'alter/native.' The author argues that enslavement, colonialism and settlement in the metropole created the black woman's body as both other/same and as deeply affective, whether read as fear, disgust, contempt or fascination. Her body draws attention to the negotiations through which the semblance of consensus on the citizen body is created. Yet, at the same time, black women's bodies as Sable-Saffron Venus alter/natives rupture the collective body formed through the (re)iteration, (re)interpretation and (re)presentation of the meanings of muscle, bone, fat and skin."--Page 4 of cover

"Shirley Anne Tate beschäftigt sich in ihrem Beitrag mit dem Phänomen des Rassismus. Tates Beitrag befasst sich mit einer Form der Gouvernementalität, die nicht von Regierungsprogrammatiken ausgeht, sondern eher auf der Ebene von interaktionalen und alltäglichen Praktiken in der Entstehung von Selbstverhältnissen statthat. Im Zentrum ihrer Betrachtung steht die black community und ihre diskursive Herstellung in Großbritannien. Der Staat ist nach Tate nicht nur ein politisches oder administratives Gebilde, sondern im besonderen Maße ein kulturelles. In diesem Sinne spricht sie von Gouvernementalität als dem staatlichen Projekt der moralischen Regulierung. Diese Regulierung ist darauf gerichtet, mannigfaltige Gruppenerfahrungen auf eine einheitliche und vereinigende Praxis zu reduzieren. Die Rolle des Staates und der Einfluss performativer Diskurse, so meint Tate, könne bei der Universalisierung (universalization) durch die Bezeichnung black community nicht vernachlässigt werden. Denn vor diesem Hintergrund agieren bürgerliche Institutionen und soziale Gruppen als erzieherische Kräfte und tragen zur Formierung von Bürgern und Minderheiten bei. Die black community müsse daher als Gemeinschaftskörper so regieren, dass sie in das Denken und die Praxis der Akteure als moralischer Imperativ eingreife. Doch fier Tate ist die black community nicht nur ein Ort staatlicher Kontrolle, vielmehr ist sie auch ein Ort des Ausprobierens und des Erlebens eines widersprüchlichen und vielfältigen Alltags. Im Anschluss an diese Beobachtung fragt Tate mit Homi K. Bhabha danach, ob eine Poetik beziehungsweise Repräsentationsbasis außerhalb staatlicher und gesellschaftlich dominanter Darstellungsformen statthaben kann, in der die Repräsentation einer interstitiellen Gemeinschaft als performativer Raum sowie entsprechende Praktiken von Uneindeutigkeit ermöglicht werden." This book assesses the nature and extent of the project of deracialisation required to counter the contemporary dynamics of racialisation across four varieties of modernity: Sweden, South Africa, Brazil and the UK, based on original research on each of the four country contexts. Since racism began to be recognised or identified as a problem, an assemblage of supra-national initiatives have been devised in the name of combatting, dismantling or reducing it. There has been a recent shift whereby such supra-national bodies move toward embedding strategies against racism within the framework of human rights and devolving such responsibility to other bodies at a national level. The authors bring together a team of international experts in this field, in order to compare the priorities and effectiveness of current strategic approaches in each national context, examining their relationalities and connecting these cases within a joint theoretical and methodological framework. Thus, this book contributes to theoretical knowledge on racialisation and deracialisation, produce a new data set on contemporary interventions and institutions and establish new principles and practice for national projects of deracialisation and anti-racism, building on cross-national learning
