Children and young people are now living in an era where their daily routines are saturated with different media platforms, competing for their attention. Once such platform is radio. Whilst other forms of media, such as social media and television, are associated with negative portrayals of young people in some contemporary popular and academic debate, radio has often been met with positive appraisals. For instance, radio has been heralded for its ability to empower young people and to position young people within dominant societal discourses, from which they were previously excluded. Writings on radio are a multidisciplinary effort, drawing on fields including communication and media studies; human geography; sociology; journalism; cultural studies; and musicology. There are many different 'types' of radio stations on which scholarship exists, including but not limited to commercial; community; college; university; and net-only. Most research into radio (particularly community radio) has used case studies from developing nations. Specific policy and political regulatory structures exist within different countries, and so research is not easily transferable. This article will introduce the reader to dominant themes and areas of interest from international and interdisciplinary scholarship regarding children and young people's relationships with radio – both as listeners and as volunteers/staff - as explored in academic debate. This bibliography begins by detailing texts that provide useful overviews of the topic of children, young people and radio. It then lists and discusses useful textbooks and journals. The paper then moves on to discuss textbooks and journal articles thematically, beginning with empowerment and voice, then belonging, community and social inclusion, and a final thematic section on learning, knowledge and skills. Texts discussing online radio and the history of radio as it intersects with young people are also discussed. The paper concludes by detailing useful resources for making radio, either by, or for, children and young people.

AbstractIn this paper we, twin sisters, present a joint autoethnographic account of providing end of life care for our mum who had terminal cancer. Using the theoretical framing of performance from Goffman's theory of Dramaturgy, we present the findings from a joint autoethnography, focusing on two key themes: performing emotion work and performing what we conceptualise as 'dignity work'. This paper's contributions are twofold. First, conceptually, this paper offers an important contribution to literature concerned with the sociology of illness, by critically engaging with Goffman's notion of frontstage and backstage performance, applied to the context of home care provided by family carers. The second contribution of this paper is methodological; we promote the under‐utilised approach of a joint autoethnography and argue for its usefulness in the context of end of life care. We contend that the process of writing this paper was emotionally challenging, yet arriving at the final paper, which serves as a legacy of our mum, was cathartic. We argue for the usefulness of written diaries as a backstage arena through which other informal carers can think through, and come to terms with, experiences of death and dying.

This article adopts a reflexive stance as the authors look back on their doctoral research projects; the first author exploring young people's relationships with community radio, and the second author studying young people's alcohol consumption practices and experiences, both in the North West of England, UK. The authors discuss the methods of data collection they employed, which enabled young people the opportunity to participate in meaningful ways. However, drawing on snapshots from their PhD theses, the authors question whether decisions made when writing up related to protecting anonymity, (re)presenting speech characteristics, and editing, independently of participants, potentially undid some of the hard work exerted in creating an equitable space for young people's contributions, resultantly perpetuating the regulation of young people and keeping them "in their place". The authors propose some recommendations for facilitating the inclusion of young people in the writing up of participatory research.

This editorial recognises that the language we use shapes the encounters we have with children, young people and their families. The words we choose carry power to support, label, positively affect or diminish self-esteem. The words we select either consciously or unconsciously have impact. Words are culturally, contextually and temporally bound. It argues that words are political, shifting both in response to situations and in order to reframe situations.

AbstractThis paper draws on two favourite characters from British reality television show,Love Island2018: Jack Fincham, a former stationery sales manager, and Alex George, an Accident & Emergency [A&E] doctor, to explore how heterosexual norms are constructed and challenged. We study the romantic on-screen relationships these characters have with the female contestants, and between the two male characters themselves through the notion of 'bromance'. Through a textual analysis of the spoken words and physical interactions between characters in episodes forming the fourth series ofLove Islandand analysis of social media posts and articles in popular press outlets, we use the notion of gender performativity to explore how these characters perform both hegemonic and, what we argue is, 'threatened' masculinity. We use the 'Male Gaze' to methodologically lens the performances by characters and their romantic interactions on the television show. In particular, we focus on Jack and Alex's budding relationship and the condemning of this relationship by the public amid Alex's termination of his romantic relationship. The decision by Alex to end this relationship led to many viewers questioning his sexuality, with specific reference to his adoration for Jack. Whilst broadly, this paper contributes to debates on the sociological potential of reality television shows, such asLove Island, its specific contribution is to a small, but growing body of international scholarship on homosocial relationships and male love stories in television and film. With this paper, we also contribute towards redressing the marginalization of women within the study of bromance.

Through a textual analysis of four episodes comprising the 2019 ITV 1 psychological thriller Cheat, this article explores a fictional representation of the United Kingdom (UK) Higher Education (HE) setting in a television drama. We discuss our analysis in the context of growing marketisation of UK HE, where academics are increasingly viewing students as powerful consumers. We focus on one of the central characters, final-year undergraduate student Rose Vaughan, and the staff with whom she interacts in a fictional HE institution – St. Helen's College. This article engages with the following themes: 'The powerful student consumer' and 'The commodified academic'. Insight gleaned through the textual analysis of this dramatised depiction of UK HE allows us to attempt to understand how both students and academics might be navigating the neoliberal university and negotiating place and status as (paying) students and (commercial) academics. Although heralded as powerful student-consumers in much literature, our analysis of this television drama shows how students can potentially disrupt the united front often attempted by HE institutions, but ultimately are faced with a 'the house always wins'1 scenario. Our article offers an important contribution to the psycho-sociological literature into how the television drama depicts that the student experience has been transformed and impacted by HE's marketisation. This includes a reconsideration of how the television drama portrays what it means to be a student, by exploring how one student is conceptualised, understood, and represented in the psychological thriller.

Cities have gained increasing attention from government, researchers, and industry. The focus upon smarter and more efficient cities is important, but incomplete. Against this backdrop, COST Action builds on a European Science Foundation exploratory workshop on the emerging theme of smart and liveable cities. COST Action's framework for People Friendly Cities in a Data Rich World acknowledges that the city is largely the product of top-down expertise, and a process in which the citizen plays a marginal role. Despite this top-down approach, citizens have had to build personal and collective biographies from the infrastructure of the city. This paper explores how the community of Breiðholt, Reykjavik, is being transformed from a disadvantaged suburb, characterised as a 'ghetto', into a thriving community where citizens play a central role in decision-making. This paper presents the outcomes of a fieldwork experience, undertaken in Breiðholt as part of COST Action's Winter Training School, focused on the drivers behind, actions, and benefits of the Breiðholt Project and the Breiðholt Congress. In making recommendations for the Project and Congress, and other community-based initiatives, this paper encourages the sharing of best practices among different departments of the city, and to better utilise bridge makers (key stakeholders/community leaders) to build trust through face-to-face interactions with citizens. ; Cities have gained increasing attention from government, researchers, and industry. Based on a participatory research project which involved academics and young people at KCC Live, a community radio station in Merseyside, exploring the 1981 and 2011 riots in Liverpool, UK, this paper argues that co-produced research involving young people and radio provides an under-utilised avenue for research on historical and political geographies. Working together for a year in 2012–13, the academic and non-academic participants produced a radio documentary exploring how and why the 1981 riots in Liverpool occurred, and what we could learn from those historical events to help understand the more recent 2011 riots. Young people's capacities to engage with past events that took place before they were born, in order to reflect on and understand the political present, are seldom explored in research. The research that this paper is based on therefore provides an original and significant contribution to debates on conducting research with young people, in particular developing approaches to thinking through how young people engage with, and make sense of, politics and political activity, especially disruptive or insurgent activities like riots/urban uprisings. As a result, the paper makes an important contribution to work being done on the political capacities of young people; collective histories and memories in young people's understandings of politics, place, and space; and knowledges of urban uprisings. We argue that bringing children's/youth geographies into dialogue with political and historical geographies such as those discussed here is a useful avenue for future research.
