The depopulation processes ocurring in Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union are accompanied by the increase in the number of the oldest persons. Further deepening of these tendencies is strongly unfavourable, because the population remaining in this area is getting older and it cannot in any way contribute to the reduction of depopulation. In 2006 in Russia 20,4% of the population was in the postproduction age. The highest share of the oldest persons can be found in the European part of Russia. The highest percentage of the postproduction age population could be found in the Central District (23,4%) and the lowest - in the most eastern Far Eastern District (16,1%). The ageing process touches more the Slavic nations, especially the ethnic Russians. The initial section of the article elaborates on diverse attitudes towards abortion, and specifies the number of abortions performed before and after the fali of the Soviet Union. The following section presents spatial ćharaćteristic of the performed abortions against the largest Russian administrative units. Regional conditioning has been analysed based on the iiumber of abortions per 100 labours and number of abortions among women in labour age (hetween 15 and 49 years of age). The article also discusses the activity of non-governmental women organisations which aim at providing medical Information and participate in the family planning initiatives. Finally, the article presents the rules and conditions of allowing to perform nbortion and significant changes in Russian legislation on that issue. ; Tomasz Wites

The paper discusses aid operations in Russia, which are implemented in different ways, depending on the degree of development of democratic stmctures. In the papefs initial part, the relationships between the State and the civic society in the Soviet Union are described. Their specific naturę was due to the lack of any genuine involvement of individuals in the social sphere. Further, chan- ges taking place after the collapse of the Soviet Union are discussed by sectors of activity, including voluntary sector initiatives at the local, regional and national levels. Also, certain aid organisations are described, such as the Helsinki Group in Moscow and the Committee of Soldiers' Mothers of Russia. In addition, the paper discusses forms of organising assistance in Siberia and the Russian Far East. Finally, prospects for assistance activities in Russia are outlined. ; Tomasz Wites
