This book explores key questions concerning the reasons for China's economic miracle and the rise of BRICs. It develops the concept of the Comprehensive Advantages of Large Countries (CAOLCs) and reveals the formation mechanism of CAOLCs. By analyzing the rapid rise of BRICs and the large economy phenomena, the book emphasizes the crucial role that BRICs played during and after the global financial crisis. Readers are offered important information on how China is coping with the huge impact of the financial crisis and how it is seizing the opportunity to adjust and optimize its industrial structure in the post-crisis era. Ouyang Yao was born in Ningyuan County of Hunan Province in 1962. He studied in Lingling Branch of Hunan Normal College, Renmin University of China and Hunan University, and got the degrees of Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Economics. He became a professor in 2000. He was invited as a visiting research fellow by Hitotsubashi University of Japan in 2004, and worked as a visiting scholar in Georgia Institute of Technology, U.S. in 2007. He worked in the CPC Committee of Hunan Province and of Dong'an County and the People's Government of Yongzhou City, in 2006, he took office as secretary of CPC committee and director of Big Country Economy Research Center of Hunan University of Commerce, and concurrently as Vice President of Socialism Economic Law System Research Association of China and President of Commercial Economy Society of Hunan Province. His main research orientation is international economy and regional economy. He has taken charge of researches of major project of National Social Science Foundation, major project of National Soft Science Research Program, project of Humanistic And Social Science Research Plan of the Ministry of Education and project of China Post-doctorate Science Foundation. He has published over 150 articles on newspapers and journals including People's Daily, Guangming Daily, Management World, China Industrial Economy, Chinese Rural Economy and China Soft Science, was awarded with excellent doctor essay prize of Hunan Province, second prize of social science research results of Hunan Province, second prize of scientific and technological progress of Hunan Province and first prize of higher education teaching results of Hunan Province, selected to the 'New century excellent talent support program of the Ministry of Education' and 'New Century Talents Project of China', and receives special government allowance from the State Council.

Purpose
The development economics of large countries is a subject that studies how large developing countries evolve into developed countries through industrialization and structural transformation. By looking into the economic development of large developing countries in a systematic way, the purpose of this paper is to propose a logical system consisting of research objects, main issues, key principles and development strategies.


Design/methodology/approach
A large developing country refers to a country with a dual economic structure; it has a large population, vast territory and great market potential, but is low in labour productivity and per capita income.


Findings
The key issue of the large country's economy is the issue of the size, while the key issue of the developing country's economy is the issue of the economic structure. Therefore, the key issue of the economy of large developing courtiers lies in both the size and economic structure.


Originality/value
The endogenous capacity of a large country depends on the size of factors and the balance of supply and demand, while the comprehensive advantage of a large country depends on its diversified industrial structure and integration of factors. Based on the basic characteristics and key economic principles, large developing countries should seek endogenous, stable, coordinated and innovative development.
