Crisis Communication and Crisis Management: An Ethical Approach is the only text on the market to provide students with the integration of ethical inquiry into the fundamentals of crisis communication. Authors Burton St. John III and Yvette E. Pearson combine comprehensive coverage of the key skills, concepts, and theories of crisis communication with an extensive collection of contemporary case studies, giving students a strong understanding of the essential role that communicators play in moments of crisis. Students are encouraged to build upon their communication and ethical decision making skills using a variety of stakeholder inventories, hypothetical scenarios, discussion questions, and professional profiles. Students will also gain exposure to a mixture of discrete and ongoing crises, preparing them to manage both one-time crises and continuing crises.

The continuation of China's successful rise depends considerably on the capacity of the Chinese government to prevent and manage a wide range of potential and actual crises, which could, if mishandled, have serious adverse consequences for China. These potential crises are both domestic - where the example of the collapse of the Soviet Union is well understood and remembered in China - and, increasingly, as a result of China's ever closer involvement in the global system. This book presents a comprehensive overview of crisis management in China, and examines China's mode of managing economic

A moving, cross-national account of working mothers' daily lives-and the revolution in public policy and culture needed to improve themThe work-family conflict that mothers experience today is a national crisis. Women struggle to balance breadwinning with the bulk of parenting, and stress is constant. Social policies don't help. Of all Western industrialized countries, the United States ranks dead last for supportive work-family policies: No federal paid parental leave. The highest gender wage gap. No minimum standard for vacation and sick days. The highest maternal and child poverty rates. Can American women look to European policies for solutions? Making Motherhood Work draws on interviews that sociologist Caitlyn Collins conducted over five years with 135 middle-class working mothers in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and the United States. She explores how women navigate work and family given the different policy supports available in each country.Taking readers into women's homes, neighborhoods, and workplaces, Collins shows that mothers' desires and expectations depend heavily on context. In Sweden-renowned for its gender-equal policies-mothers assume they will receive support from their partners, employers, and the government. In the former East Germany, with its history of mandated employment, mothers don't feel conflicted about working, but some curtail their work hours and ambitions. Mothers in western Germany and Italy, where maternalist values are strong, are stigmatized for pursuing careers. Meanwhile, American working mothers stand apart for their guilt and worry. Policies alone, Collins discovers, cannot solve women's struggles. Easing them will require a deeper understanding of cultural beliefs about gender equality, employment, and motherhood. With women held to unrealistic standards in all four countries, the best solutions demand that we redefine motherhood, work, and family.Making Motherhood Work vividly demonstrates that women need not accept their work-family conflict as inevitable

This book studies the variety of organizational strategies selected to cope with critical uncertainties during crises. This research formulates and applies an institutional sense-making model to explain the selection of strategies for coping with uncertainties during crises to answer the question why some organizations select a rule-based strategy to cope with uncertainties, whereas others pursue a more ad hoc-based strategy. It finds that the level of institutionalization does not affect strategy selection in the initial phase of responding to crises; that three rigidity effects can be identified in the selection of sense-making strategies once organizations have faced the failure of their selected strategies; that discontinuities in the feedback loop of sense-making do not necessarily move organizations to switch their sense-making strategies, but interact with institutionalization to contribute to switching sense-making strategies. This book bridges the gap between institutional thinking and crisis management theorizing. A major step forward in the world of crisis management studies!----Professor Arjen Boin, Leiden University, the NetherlandsIn a world of increasingly complex, sociotechnical systems interacting in high-risk environments, Professor Lu's analysis of how organizations manage uncertainty is both timely and profound.
