Slides for a presentation at the 38th congress of the German Sociological Association (GSA) at the University of Bamberg.
First define how things turn the public into a problem" (Latour). ; Also available via the publisher: https://doi.org/10.19211/KUP9783737603072
; Nature conservation is one of the main approaches to the issue of nonnative plant species. However, there are some additional approaches and opinions, which are also investigated inmore detail in this master thesis. Furthermore the results appearing from a field mapping will beused to draw comparisons to statements from already existing literature. After some introducingdefinitions, the most important alien plant species in Austria are presented, regarding to origin, introduction, spread, impacts and habitats. The history of nature conservation, the legislation aswell as measures against neophytes are also representing a not insignificant aspect in this thesis. Moreover the motives for nature conservation will be determined in order to understandreasons for the dislike of nonnative plant species. The issue of alien plant species appears asvery complex and can be seen from an ethical, economic as well as from an ecological point ofview. Although the results appearing from the field mapping support some of thecharacterizations of neophytes, not all properties, especially the ones concerning impacts, shouldbe generalized. Rather it depends on the affected habitat together with the species living there, and not least on the (ethical) approach of the observer to the global mixing of plants andanimals. The case study "Narrative Recherche" in a Municipal Context was commissioned by the Hochschule für Künste im Sozialen (HKS) Ottersberg in Germany. It was published by the Research Group «Organizational Communication and Public Sphere» at the Institute for Applied Media Studies at the ZHAW Department of Applied Linguistics. This discourse-analytical case study reconstructs the language of public discourses by Bachelor's and Master's students in the course of the seminar "Narrative Recherche - Artistic Movements in Organizations" held at the HKS in the winter semester 2020/2021. Using the municipality of Ottersberg as a case study, the seminar firstly explores the topics and stories the students are moved by in the process of "Narrative Recherche" in connection with local politics and administration. Secondly, the way in which the students experience and evaluate the process of "Narrative Recherche" and the applied practices will be examined. Two narrative group interviews with a student group consisting of four students and four individual observation and experience reports show that topics such as structuring, language and the comprehensibility of (local) politics are highly relevant. Especially the language of politics and administration is a central pain point and a controversial issue. The overarching "public story" is that of the world-improving bridge-builders. The students reconstruct "Narrative Recherche" as a dynamic growth-promoting and community-building group process that can be used to help shape local politics, e.g. by researching, selecting and asking questions or reflecting and sorting out insights together and individually. All of this takes place in meeting spaces that convey security and where dealing with uncertainty and insecurity can be learned and trained.
In terms of an integrative and comprehensive risk analysis, the issue of an appropriate data collection is widely recognized. In this context, remote sensing is generally perceived as a promising tool for an economical, up-to-date and independent data collection and has been employed in various investigations in the geo-risk context. A review of past applications reveals the versatility of remote sensing data and techniques with regard to the analysis of earthquake and landslide risks. The study of earthquake hazard components reach from geologic site characterisations and fault mapping, detection of pre-event surface temperature anomalies for early warning, kinematics and dynamics of active fault systems, to the detection of earthquake-induced changes to the land surface. For landslides, remote sensing techniques and applications contribute to basic terrain analysis including monitoring of slope stability and land cover, the detection and mapping of pre-event landslide-related activities such as slow mass movements as well as the volumetric quantification of landslide related changes to land cover and form. Remote sensing for vulnerability-centred investigations is a less long established field of research. Nevertheless, a vast amount of research aims at the derivation of pre-event vulnerability indicators – related to physical, demographic and socioeconomic aspects of vulnerability–. Also work on post-event emergency response and damage assessment employing especially very high resolution data has been carried out. In the context of geo-risk analysis, both for pre- and post-event as well as hazard- and vulnerability-centred investigations, past- and present-day remote sensing missions have proven useful. Data with a coarser geometric resolution and larger spatial coverage per scene are able to contribute to overall evaluation of pre- and post-event situations. In contrast, it is yet both difficult and expensive to obtain high geometric resolution data such as airborne LIDAR or VHR optical data over larger areas affected, specifically in case of an earthquake event. In addition to that, the geometric resolution of the sensors and the associated scene size and thus, the spatial scale of analysis, need always be selected in consideration of the context of the objects to be analysed. Future earth observation missions have the potential to play a key role in earthquake- and landslide-related investigations and to continue or even improve geoinformation products. For example, the ESA Sentinel missions will feature enhanced geometric and thematic capabilities and increased revisit capabilities at low cost. Other future missions such as ALOS-2, the RADARSAT constellation, DESDynI, CARTOSAT-3, ALOS-3, TerraSAR-X 2, TanDEM-L, WorldView-3, or the hyperspectral sensors EnMAP and HyspIRI still need to be assessed in terms of cost and applicability with respect to the particular research questions addressed. For example, TanDEM-L will open up opportunities to better understand the earth's dynamic surface processes enabling continuous monitoring of earth surface deformation e.g. due to seismic movements, volcanic eruptions, landslides, subsidence or uplift in the range of centimetres. In this context, the enhanced capabilities of the described missions are believed to enable a leap forward in earthquake and landslide risk research both for hazard- as well as vulnerability-related investigations. Apart from the future perspective, international research groups from both government and academia have produced remote sensing based geo-products in past years that will provide valuable input to vulnerability-related research in the context of this project. These include on the one hand large area global or regional land cover datasets that can be used as a first approximation of human and physical exposure as well as for the disaggregation of population census data. However, with regard to these products, a better understanding of each data set's strength and weakness is still on demand. On the other hand, space-based pre-operational emergency response services have produced a large product portfolio and significant experiences in post-event mapping applications in recent years. Overall, from a technical perspective, the constantly increasing availability and accessibil-ity of modern-day remote sensing technologies and the enhanced technical capabilities of future missions will provide new opportunities and data continuity for a wide range of geo-risk investigations. However, still today and in the future, data cost will be the main limiting factor.
My presentation focuses on the mapping between verb classes and constructions in German constructions with particle verbs featuring durch- ('through'), ein- ('into') and weg- ('away') and/or directional prepositional phrases introduced by durch ('through'), in ('into') or aus ('out') and von ('off')1, see (1)-(7). The durch-, ein- and weg-constructions allow for both path and property resultatives (Goldberg 1995, Goldberg & Jackendoff 2004). Starting from Levin (1993, 2015), Levin & Rappaport Hovav (2013) and Richter & van Hout (2010), I first describe the verb classes that are compatible with the three constructions. I further analyse the use of the different verb classes within the durch-, ein- and weg-constructions respectively and compare the three constructions with respect to the verb-to-construction relation. Some verbs occur in the three constructions, e. g. schmuggeln ('to smuggle') whereas others are not attested in all the instances (e.g. bügeln, 'to iron'). These differences can partly be explained by the semantics of the verbs and the speakers' world knowledge. Finally, I describe the interaction between the verbs and the arguments of the constructions (subject, object, Xcomp), more specifically with the aim to describe the different possibilities. Globalization and urbanization go hand in hand. Worldwide the number of people living in cities is rising. During the last years Indonesia showed one of the fastest growing rates of urbanization within Southeast Asia. Today more than half (265 Million) of all Indonesians live in cities. Until 2050 this percentage is expected to rise to 71 %. This means that Indonesia's urban population will grow by around 100 million. One major issue is the provision of affordable housing. Here the Central-Javanese city of Surakarta could gain national and international attention for its in-novative housing policies. This master thesis gives an insight into the livelihoods of the urban poor in the city of Surakarta. The thesis focuses on two case studies in Mojosongo, in the north part of the city: Ngemplak Sutan and Mipitan Sewu. Both research areas were founded within a relocation program by the city government in 2008, as a response to heavy inner-city flooding. Consequently, in a first step, this thesis analyses the resources the household has access to. In a second step, the influ-ences of the surrounding structures and processes are being analyzed. A special focus is put on the effects of the relocation program and the residents satisfaction with the resettlement. This research uses qualitative primary data, collected through semi-structured interviews, observa-tions and focus group discussions. Besides mapping and household surveys were conducted in both settlements. This research reveals that financial-capital has got a crucial role for the households in both re-search areas, since monetary means are being used to compensate the lack of various resources. Low educational levels, as well as a lack of formal working places, lead to a high importance of the informal sector. Both settlements lack proper infrastructural provision, especially regarding the accessibility and connectivity to the city center. This circumstance is responsible for higher living costs (e.g. transport) in Mojosongo, compared to the former inner-city situation. The high importance of the informal sector further limits the potential to increase household income and shortens the household (planning-) perspective. Although social-capital is strongly existent among most households, the benefits the households can gain from it are little, due to the lack of financial means. Hence social-capital is limited to solidarity within the neighborhood and reli-gious activities. People in both settlements could profit from the process of democratization and decentraliza-tion. Since 1998 measurable efforts could be made in education and health provision. Further the process of relocation meant a positive change for most people. Nevertheless, a universal evaluation of the project is not possible since the success is highly dependent on the local cir-cumstances. This study increases the knowledge about urban livelihoods in Central-Java, Indonesia and shows how measurements of the city administration can affect local livelihoods. These results may be used for future resettlement measurements and recommendations for an adequate provision of common goods.
; Carbon sequestration in forests is a highly topical issue in the current climate change debate. The most important carbon pools are living and dead tree biomass, timber products and their substitution effects. The carbon sequestration of the living tree biomass mainly depends on tree species, site and silvicultural management. Type and duration of use are the main determinants of carbon sequestration in timber products and their potential for substitution. Forest management strategies can focus on the aim of carbon storage and thereby contribute to the socially demanded climate protection. However, for this to be achieved, knowledge about the effects of tree species, site and silvicultural management on carbon sequestration is required. For that purpose, the development of the five main tree species in Lower Saxony, Germany, was simulated under a near-natural and a carbon-oriented management at selected sites. The main tree species in the Lower Saxony State Forest are Oak, European beech, Norway spruce, Douglas fir and Scots pine. The selected sites are distributed in four growth districts in the lowlands and the mountainous regions of Lower Saxony, respec- tively. In order to identify important combinations of water and nutrient supply as well as the corresponding productivity of the tree species, information was gathered from site mapping and forest planing of the forest administration. Based on the operating inventory of the Lower Saxony State Forest, models for the generation of single tree data were created. These models were particularly used for the estimation of the current basal area and the underlying diameter distribution of the simulation stands. To represent silvicultural management, it is necessary to model intensity and the type of thinning. Using data from long-term thinning experiments of the Northwest German Forest Research Institute and quantile regression, it was possible to create species specific functions for maximum basal area, which are valid for Northwest Germany. Due to the larger database and the applied methods, these functions allow for more accurate estimates and can thus be regarded as improvements over the previously utilized methods. The ratio of current to maximum basal stand area was used for defining a realistic concept of utilization with height dependent thinnings. With help of this new concept, it is possible to simulate a graduated thinning, controlled by basal area. Furthermore, other utilization concepts can be modelled with the developed methods. The effects of silvicultural management on stand development were simulated with the forest growth simulator WaldPlaner. In order to estimate the consequences for carbon storage, single-tree data were converted to biomass with published functions. Additionally, harvested timber was allocated to product groups with a new allocation formula and a model for cascade use was integrated in the analysis. By forming a carbon sequestration rate, conclusions about the impact of water and nutrients on carbon storage are possible. Further, this rate allows for the comparison of tree species, sites and individual carbon pools. With respect to the considered pools, the sum of the carbon rates differs clearly among tree species and results in the following order: Douglas fir, Norway spruce > Scots pine > Beech, Oak. More weight can be given to carbon sequestration, as a subgoal of forest management, by selecting and mixing site adapted tree species, silvicultural management and con- sideration of the expectable wood qualities and risks. Site adapted coniferous species have a strong potential for climate protection. However, their cultivation should not harm the multifunctional sustainability of forests. Cascade and material usage of wood, followed by energetic utilization, are to be expanded, in order to keep as many wood products as possible in use. Forest policy has to manage several fields of action. On the one hand, concrete measures for resolving target conflicts between national climate policy and other strategies have to be developed (e.g., Nationale Biodiversitätsstrategie, Waldstrategie 2020). On the other hand, it is an important task to give the society a better understanding of the great importance forests have for carbon sequestration and sustainable provision of raw material. Nevertheless, there is still an enormous need for research on the impact of climate change and various risks and multiple use of wood on carbon sequestration in the forestry-wood-sector.
