This thesis explores the concept of masculinity in contemporary Northern-Irish fiction. My body of texts is constituted by six novels published in the decade after the Good Friday Agreement (1998): Breakfast on Pluto by Patrick McCabe (1998), No Bones by Anna Burns (2001), Fodder by Tara West (2002), The Ultras by Eoin McNamee (2004), Little Constructions by Anna Burns (2007) and The Truth Commissioner by David Park (2008). Because of the close links between masculinity, violence, national identity and the military, the issue of masculinity is of particular importance in the aftermath of the Troubles and of the peace process in Northern Ireland. In the novels, a dialectics between conformism and subversion of codes of manliness develops and reconfigures masculinity as 'anti-virility' in order to reveal the characteristics and functioning of the stereotype. The focus first on the supremacy of masculinity and then on the subordination of femininity in the novels leads us to notice a queer and feminist orientation in the writing strategies. This particular reshaping of masculinity and the unveiling of the gender order enable the emergence of a counter-narrative which challenges the hegemonic discourse about peace in the Northern-Irish public sphere. The aggressive incitement to make a fresh start and the pervasive optimism of this rhetoric are debunked by the lingering past residuals in the novels which ultimately display a profound malaise in the post-conflict Northern Ireland.

This dissertation on professional politicians' masculinities in a context of parity aims atadressing the question of convertibility of masculine properties into political capitalwhile occuring in a context of criticism towards the masculine ways of assuming arepresentative role. Such masculinities are diverse. Their productions and uses dependupon the social, political and sexual properties of those who embody them. Above all, these masculine identities can be adapted to meet the legitimacy criteria related to theemerging second individualism - yet symbolically linked to femininity. They thencontribute to the legitimization of professional politicians in general and to thelegitimization of those who are members of the political establishment in particular. Inits conservative-progressive version, the use of masculinity still participates to thelegitimization of the political, social and sexual orders as a whole. This type ofmasculinity is an hegemonic masculinity in the strongest understanding of the term.

After a long phase of emergence, the analysis of masculinity made her way in studies on gender and was imposed in the social sciences has varying rates and according to more or less strong resistances according to national contexts. Pioneers authors as the American sociologist Michael Kimmel have problematizes the late 1990s the idea that masculinities were 'plural' and to analyze one or more 'attack (s) of masculinity', themes which circulates widely in the social sciences and have also been the subject of political reappropriation of all kinds. Similarly, the concept of 'hegemonic masculinity' by Raewyn Connell Forge has experienced significant success in academic arenas and criticism largely permitted to open new avenues of research attentive to the historicizing of masculinity. It is in the lineage of this work that fits the book directed by Anne-Marie Sohn, resulting from a conference on gender and masculinities. The requirement of a relational gender history form the thread of a book whose questions could not have emerge without '[...] the long run' accumulation phase 'experienced by history women and gender [and which] built the necessary epistemological bases was the advent of a story of men and masculinities '(p. 16). The Consumer Culture Theory postulates that gender is a social construct defined by a historical and cultural context. It is performed in everyday life by individuals through their practices and social interactions. Much research in consumer research has illustrated how gender can be made through consumer practices and how these practices contribute to its reproduction and invisibilisation. However, a body of work has also interrogated how transgressive consumer practices participate in the deconstruction of gender, and have the potential to disrupt the dominant cultural system. But while work has tended to interrogate reconfigurations of female consumers' femininity through their investment in male-dominated practices, there seems to be little work that has interrogated the role of consumer practices designated as feminine in reconfiguring consumers' masculinity. We identify that the frame of reference for legitimate performances of masculinity is hegemonic masculinity. This induces a construction of ideal masculinity in distance or even in opposition to femininity. Thus, we question transgressive masculinities through the study of the case of skirt wearers. Historically constructed as a feminine clothing practice, the wearing of the skirt distances its wearers from the framework of recognised and valued performances of masculinity. Through the career concept of deviant careers, we are able to highlight the conditions necessary for consumers to break out of the symbolic boundaries of hegemonic masculinity. We also highlight how deviant consumption practices participate in both the reappropriation of consumers' masculine performances, as well as a possible questioning of the legitimacy of the dominant system. We understand, however, that the need for recognition by the system pushes consumers to reproduce the dynamics of the dominant system and to redefine acceptable boundaries of transgressive practice. Consumer emancipation seems to be constructed in a complex dialectic with submission to the normative framework, and we raise the cost of hegemonic masculinity for men in relation to their consumption. This work hence aims to offer theoretical contributions on the themes of gender and social spaces of consumption, contributions on methodologies adapted to the study of sensitive research fields, as well as managerial contributions focused on gendered marketing and social spaces, identified in this work as tools of cultural legitimisation and so of political action.

This volume seeks to revisit the Franco-Maghrebian representations of masculinity in the line of the New Men?s Studies examining the aesthetical expressions as well as their interconnectedness with the sociocultural realities. In order to emphasize the arts? role to rethink the codes of masculinity related to social, national and cultural identities, it assembles the work of experts from different research fields as Maghrebian Studies, Gender and Queer Studies, Popular culture, Cinema and Media Studies, sociology and anthropology. Their contributions unveil the processes of formation, negotiation and transformation of gendered and sexual norms in the societies at issue here providing an in-depth description of the variety of 'Maghrebian Masculinities'. 0
This thesis examines the reconfigurations of gender relations caused by the armed conflict in Casamance, the oldest rebellion in Africa which for nearly 40 years oppose the State of Senegal to the secessionist Mouvement des Forces Démocratiques de Casamance (MFDC). Since the early 2000s, the conflict has entered in a floating phase of "neither war nor peace". In this context, we see an over-presence of women in public and private spheres due to the fact that the war has challenged masculinities and consequently provoque a rise of femininities. Indeed, in public sphere, the management of the Casamance conflict is marked by its androcentric dimension; men have shown their limits in the ability to put an end to the conflict, that is to say to fulfill the politico-military role of which they have the prerogative. Faced with that, women have mobilized to end the war through the creation of the Plateforme des Femmes pour la Paix en Casamance (PFPC). In the private domestic sphere, we observe vulnerable masculinities and overloaded femininities. While men were the main victims of the Casamance conflict, women became heads of families. However, a paradox is highlighted: this new paradigm of gender relations in favor of over-feminization in Casamance has not challenge patriarchal gender arrangements. The increase of female autonomy has not been accompanied by an increase of their political power or even their domestic power. As a result, this thesis seeks to demonstrate the paradoxical dimensions of this limited surfeminization without relevant effect on patriarchal gender norms. R.
