This paper examines the interaction between Chongqing's Red culture programme (2008-2012) and the practices of Singing Red by retiree participants during the campaign. Drawing on ethnographic data collected during fieldwork in Chongqing, this paper argues that the community practices of retirees constitute a distinctive structure that is less powerful but more durable than that of the official Red culture programme. The practice of Singing Red by the retirees in their daily life did not subvert, but exercised tactical effect on the official programme. (China Perspect/GIGA)

The problems of reconciliation and accommodation following the Vietnam War are still extremely pronounced. Polarization in social, economic, and ideological terms created by the long war is still evident. Repression of civil society during the war and military "victory" created difficulties for national reconciliation, integration, and development.

Radically democratic citizen-action-in-the-world requires teachers who are committed to the emergence of such citizens in their classrooms. In addition, commitment alone is insufficient. Teachers must have access to the power to realize their commitment within the overwhelming constraints of neoliberalism. This article illuminates our communal becoming as teacher leaders within a course that utilizes both informative and transformative pedagogy to invite us to view political action newly. This militant pedagogy inspires us to be empowered citizens who craft powerful contexts that call forth new ways of being and acting to incite futures that were not going to happen without collective action.

The Patriotic War of 1812 in Russia has become an all-purpose historical fairy tale. It involves an overpowering aggressor from the West, which Russia, due to its moral superiority, ultimately defeats. Ever since the Crimean War, this story has been told again and again whenever Russia has faced peril from abroad. Today, it is readily deployed to legitimise President Vladimir Putin's system of 'vertical power'. The celebration of the war's 200th anniversary in Borodino showed how important patriotic mobilisation is for the regime.
