There is an increasing tendency to use the development experience of Asian countries as a reference point for other countries in the Global South. Korea's condensed urbanization and industrialization, accompanied by the expansion of new cities and industrial complexes across the country, have become one such model, even if the fruits of such development may not have been equitably shared across geographies and generations. The chapters in this book critically reassess the Korean urban development experience from regional policy to new town development, demonstrating how these policy experiences were deeply rooted in Korea's socioeconomic environment and discussing what can be learned from them when applying them in other developmental contexts

Constructing Mexico City: Colonial Conflicts over Culture, Space, and Authority examines the spatial, material, and cultural dimensions of life in eighteenth-century Mexico City, through programs that colonial leaders created to renovate and reshape urban environments. In doing so, this study reveals various points of conflict and discord over how various social groups defined and shared the public spaces in the city, and understood their place within a wider colonial system. Bailey Glasco, drawing on research from numerous archives in Mexico City, sheds new light on the critical roles that urban planning and renewal played in the social and cultural dynamics of the city, as well as how it anticipated early definitions of modern Mexican identity.

This paper seeks to explore whether shared threat perceptions between Ukraine and the West accelerate Ukraine's integration into the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The arguments are built based on concepts of civilizational security and the transformative power of Euro- Atlantic institutions. The paper finds that the growing traction of civilizational framing, along with Ukraine's contribution to European security, provides a favourable environment for Ukraine's race for membership in the Euro-Atlantic security community. However, the primary obstacle encountered on this path is less about EU's self-perception as a transformative power, and more about the political resolve of NATO's member states.

In this article, we investigate the college teaching experiences of four first-generation and working-class (FGWC) sociology educators with varying social locations. We used collaborative autoethnography to compare our backgrounds and university navigational strategies employed and shared with our students and mentees. Using an intersectional lens, we find our experiences reflect both commonalities and divergences in the FGWC experience, including disclosure of our FG and/or WC origin status to students and our perceptions of how race, gender, and parental status shape our teaching of sociology across differing institutional settings. We end by using insights gleaned from comparing our experiences to provide recommendations for creating more inclusive classroom and institutional environments.

With the growing number of adult and military veterans entering higher education, it is important to understand and incorporate the basics of andragogy in curriculum, course development, and the learning environment to facilitate learning and degree completion. Researchers in this S-STEM project funded by the NSF share observations of a student-faculty partnership that resulted from the development of a formal learning community. A series of targeted seminars were conducted that appear to have increased adult and military veteran engineering and technology students' levels of connectedness and self-efficacy. Results of this pilot study are shared as an evidence-based practice to enhance adult and military veteran students' learning and degree completion.

Fighting fake news is a difficult and challenging task. With an increasing impact on the social and political environment, fake news exert an unprecedently dramatic influence on people's lives. In response to this phenomenon, initiatives addressing automated fake news detection have gained popularity, generating widespread research interest. However, most approaches targeting English and low-resource languages experience problems when devising such solutions. This study focuses on the progress of such investigations, while highlighting existing solutions, challenges, and observations shared by various research groups. In addition, given the limited amount of automated analyses performed on Romanian fake news, we inspect the applicability of the available approaches in the Romanian context, while identifying future research paths.

Identifying core values is the first step in creating a shared understanding in society regarding the expected behaviour of public office occupants. Certain countries publish a list of core values to guide their civil servants in their daily operations, drawn from social normal's, democratic principles, and professional culture. The changing environment of the public sector requires the articulation of core values. Many countries have updated their core public service values in recent years, and additional revisions are still being implemented. In the course of these revisions, countries have again emphasized "traditional" values, giving them modern connotations and adding "new" values to reflect a results-based culture of public service.

Abstract
An interconnected system of paved surfaces is an omnipresent feature of the urban environment. The author contends that, because of its ubiquity, this 'pavement' impinges on the thoughts of ordinary urban dwellers in ways they might not consciously recognize. Evidence of feelings that may otherwise remain unexpressed has been sought from deliberate and incidental references to the pavement in the works of journalists, poets, memoirists and artists. Such works reveal that the pavement is a repository for private urban imaginings that may coalesce into shared public imaginaries. As a consequence the pavement can assume diverse symbolic roles and even fulfil the function of a monument onto which people project their own meanings.

The following article approaches the paths traveled by the feminist policies through different historical times; with the intention, on one side, to create statements related to the present of a plural feminist movement that has caused criticism and self-criticism; on the other hand, to re-evaluate key concepts from multiples fight models against inequality and from the composition of a non-homogeneous feminism subject. In this sense, reflections aimed to highlight those common nuclei that have been and remain being continuities on a broken environment, recognizing the political validity that preserves nowadays such as shared commitments and the relevance they have in Latin American realities.

Based upon the lessons learned and the educational materials generated from a doctoral course on qualitative data analysis, a group of doctoral students, their professor, and a linguistics consultant launched an on- going project to create a series of reusable learning objects designed to help other groups of students and professors learn how to analyze qualitative data. The results of the first six months of this project are shared, as the team describes how they have begun to use instructional design and software applications to create a digital learning environment in the form of a series of activities engineered to help analysts learn how to master grounded theory open coding.

The BRICS grouping (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) was born of a desire to create an alternative to the Western-dominated financial institutions and to secure for these countries a greater role in global affairs. This partnership is based on mutual interests and necessity rather than on shared values and ideals. High levels of social inequality, pervasive corruption, and challenges in education and the environment are common to all five countries. The New Development Bank, together with better coordination of joint action by the BRICS, has the potential to significantly reduce the scale of these problems and contribute to the long-term sustainability of these economies.

Global education plays an increasingly important role in enriching students' learning experiences in US institutions of higher education. Students are connected to the world through global culture, economics, politics, technology and immigration. This paper examines the perceptions of 305 graduate students and alumni concerning the need for global education programs in the United States. Participants shared their views of the importance of global education in understanding today's economy, culture, and environment, while addressing our future needs and challenges. There were no significant statistical differences between the perceptions of graduate students and alumni or between those of international and American students in regards to the importance and benefits of global education.

This article provides an overview of the methods, assumptions, and key findings of behavioral genetics methodology for family researchers with a limited background. We discuss how family researchers can utilize and contribute to the behavioral genetics field, particularly in terms of conducting research that seeks to explain shared environmental effects. This can be done, in part, by theoretically controlling for genetic confounds in research that seeks to determine cause‐and‐effect relationships among family variables and individual outcomes. Gene–environment correlation and interaction are especially promising areas for the family researcher to address. Given the methodological advancements in the field, we also briefly comment on new methods in molecular genetics for studying psychological mental health disorders.
