Seit Filme gemacht werden, stehen auch Sorbinnen und Sorben vor und hinter der Kamera. Einen Höhepunkt erlebte der sorbische Film in der DDR, vor allem in der DEFA-Produktionsgruppe "Sorbischer Film" (Serbska filmowa skupina). In der deutschen Filmgeschichtsschreibung aber ist er bisher nahezu unsichtbar. In Kooperation mit dem Sorbischen Institut schließt die Monografie mit Beiträgen sorbischer und deutscher Autorinnen und Autoren diese Lücke. Vom Kaiserreich bis in die Gegenwart geben sie einen Überblick des sorbischen Filmschaffens. Der Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf den Kino- und Fernsehproduktionen des DEFA-Studios sowie der Babelsberger Filmhochschule zwischen 1946 und 1992. Ergänzend dazu werden die wichtigsten sorbischen Filmschaffenden der DDR vorgestellt und ihre Bedeutung für den sorbischen und deutschen Film erörtert. Einzelbeiträge beleuchten zudem Fragen von Identitätsbildung und Film, Literaturverfilmungen, Stereotypen im Film und Verbindungen zum indigenen Kino. Ein Gespräch mit ehemaligen Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern der Produktionsgruppe bietet seltene Einblicke in eine bislang unbekannte Produktionspraxis und den Umgang mit der einzigen staatlich anerkannten ethnischen Minderheit der DDR. Auf zwei beigelegten DVDs werden wichtige Werke – sowohl deutsch- als auch sorbischsprachig – erstmals öffentlich zugänglich gemacht.

This book deals with the tension between a strategy of language maintenance (protecting and reinforcing the language where it is still spoken by community members) and a strategy of language revitalization (opening up access to the language to all interested people and encouraging new domains of its use). The case study presented concerns a grammar school in Upper Lusatia, which hosts the coexistence of a community of Upper Sorbian-speakers and a group of German native speakers who are learning Upper Sorbian at school. The tensions between these two groups studying at the same school are presented in this book against the background of various language strategies, practices and ideologies. The conflict of interests between the "traditional" community which perceives itself as the "guardians" of the minority language and its potential new speakers is played off on different levels by policy-makers and may be read through different levels of language policy and planning
