Abstract

Since the early 1970s, the question of gender has generated a significant amount of research. Investigation of the role of women in cities (eg, in relation to components of the Ur structure such as transportation & housing) has shown that women have a variety of relations with the organization of social space. Results to date help to clarify the main aspects of these relationships & to assess the relevance of these kinds of inquiries. Trends include focus on changing M-F relationships in the Ur context. It is suggested that the strengths & weaknesses of future research will emerge at two levels: theory building in the area of gender politics, & continuing investigations of this question in the context of more traditional approaches to Ur politics.
