Campsite impacts in protected natural areas are most effectively minimized by a containment strategy that focuses use on a limited number of sustainable campsites that spatially concentrate camping activities. This research employs spatial autoregressive (SAR) modeling to evaluate the relative influence of use-related, environmental, and managerial factors on two salient measures of campsite impact. Relational analyses examined numerous field-collected and GIS-derived indicators, including several new indicators calculated using high-resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) topographic data to evaluate the influence of terrain characteristics on the dependent variables. Chosen variables in the best SAR models explained 35% and 30% of the variation in campsite size and area of vegetation loss on campsites. Results identified three key indicators that managers can manipulate to enhance the sustainability of campsites: campsite type, and terrain characteristics relating to landform slope and topographic roughness. Results support indirect management methods that rely on the location, design, construction, and maintenance of campsites, instead of direct regulations that restrict visitation or visitor freedoms. The article discusses the features of organizing tourist and recreational activities in territories with a high degree of territorial and institutional uniqueness, presents a theoretical and methodological approach to identifying and determining the development goals of the territories of priority tourist and recreational development – tourist-recreational zones on the coast of Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is a territory with special conditions of use, which has unique natural characteristics and a powerful system of environmental and legal regulation of public relations in the field of environmental protection. For effective planning and regulation of recreational activities in the context of strict environmental requirements for biodiversity conservation, an environmental legal mechanism is involved. This allows you to determine the priority right to use the territory, relying on the norms of environmental law. In the geoinformation environment, using the tool of legal ecological zoning, which manifests the effect of all legal norms in a particular area of the territory, tourist-recreational zones have been identified that allow the legitimate development of recreational activities within the established boundaries. The correlation of the current permitted standards of recreational load with the real state of "local ecosystems" allowed zoning of the tourist-recreational zones in terms of the intensity and nature of recreational loads. The selected categories of legal zoning make it possible to clarify the permitted types of activities on the territory within the boundaries of plots of various categories of land and determine the specific purpose of their use, the types of objects that can be placed. Further analysis of the tourist-recreational zones on the resistance of their constituent ecosystems to recreational loads made it possible to determine possible scenarios for the development of the situation and formulate goals for the development of the tourist-recreational zones with detailing to the level of recreational functions of the territories. Selected tourist-recreational zones can be proposed for the formation of specially protected areas of recreational purpose of regional significance on them and included in urban planning and program documents with the subsequent detailing of the territorial structure of tourism and regular monitoring of environmental, social and economic parameters of the development of recreational activities.

ABSTRACTNew holistic approaches to environmental management by local authorities are described. Two kinds of audit, the state of the environment report and the internal audit, are defined. State of the environment reports are assessments of the condition of the local environment, generally based on existing data. They provide information about the environment to the general public and enable councils to determine environmental strategy priorities. They are giving local authorities a new environmental stewardship function. An internal audit is an assessment not only of the authority's impacts as a producer but of its environmental interactions as a regulator, influencer and manager of the environment. For some councils, auditing is becoming a continuous process through which environmental factors can be taken into account as a routine part of policy making and implementation.Both kinds of audit are changing the relationships of local authorities, reducing internal departmentalism and leading to wider consultation and partnership with local communities.

The emergence of contemporary business environment and technologies, customer driven business perspective, and transparent and accountable business practices have led different stakeholders to demand information in relation to the management of the environment. Consequently, organizations tend to develop their strategies in line with achieving these financial and environmental performances. The apparel industry is one of the significant contributors in the Sri Lankan economy and it can be seen that Environmental Management Accounting (EMA) is often practiced in this industry. However, it is a matter of consideration for the real reason behind the adoption and implementation of Environmental Management Accounting Practices (EMAPs) in this industry. Accordingly, this study is focused on identifying the actual factors that have influenced a manufacturer in the apparel industry in Sri Lanka to adopt and implement EMAPs with the perspective of the New Institutional Sociology Theory. This study takes a case study approach. Therefore, one of the leading manufacturing companies in the apparel industry was selected as the case company. The primary data were collected through a semi-structured interview and questionnaire survey. The validity of findings was assessed through data triangulation. It was identified that the environmental cost accounting, environmentally induced capital expenditure and revenue are the mostly used EMAPs whereas the payback period method is often applied in the organization for investment appraisal activities. In terms of factors that have influenced to adopt and implement EMAPs through the Institutional Theoretical Perspective,it was found that coercive isomorphism was the most significant factor whereas the least influential factor was the normative isomorphism on the adoption and the implementation of the EMAPs in the organization. The article examines contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches to environmental management, studies the mechanism of interaction of environmental management and corporate international competitiveness, discloses the direction and form of influence of environmental management on the corporate competitive position. At the same time article stresses out that the basis of the modern environmental management is a systematic approach, the elements of which began to emerge in the late twentieth century. Environmental management is considered on the corporate, national and international levels. PurposeThe aim of the present study is to contribute to the discussion introducing the concept of social capital as a significant parameter influencing students' perceptions concerning greening initiatives in HEIs.Design/methodology/approachA theoretical analysis is presented concerning the possible links of social capital components with students' perceptions on environmental management initiatives. Furthermore, the results of an empirical study are presented exploring these issues from the perspective of students, both through quantitative and qualitative social research methods.FindingsThe empirical study reveals that students' social capital is connected with their perceptions for the environmental management of the university.Social implicationsThe paper underlines the importance of examining and taking into consideration social factors prior to the implementation of environmental management initiatives in HEIs, in order to increase their effectiveness.Originality/valueThe paper is a first attempt to empirically explore the influence of students' social capital on their perceptions for environmental management initiatives in higher education institutions.
