International audience ; Dans les années 1990, le qigong en Chine populaire et les " nouvelles religions " à Taiwan sont des phénomènes sociaux éclairant des aspects de la gouvernance dans le monde chinois et amplifiés par leur transnationalisation croissante. Le qigong " travail du souffle, exercice de l'énergie vitale " est un ensemble de pratiques et de savoirs néo-traditionnels à dimension thérapeutique et religieuse. En Chine, l'exercice du qigong, pratique corporelle de santé, renvoie à une dimension religieuse et à des interactions entre acteurs de l'État et de la société civile ; à Taiwan, le qigong s'inscrit directement dans la culture religieuse locale sans recours à la médiation du thérapeutique. La première section de l'article évoque la pluralité des discours et les processus de légitimation construits par les acteurs de la " culture du qigong ". La seconde introduit un élément de comparaison avec les " nouvelles religions " à Taiwan. Enfin, la troisième section tente de relier les deux catégories de pratiques (qigong et " nouvelles religions ") par la médiation historique du legs des sectes religieuses chinoises.

This book states that whilst academic research has long been grounded on the idea of western or scientific epistemologies, this often does not capture the uniqueness of Indigenous contexts, and particularly as it relates to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs were announced in 2015, accompanied by 17 goals and 169 targets. These goals are the means through which Agenda 2030 for sustainable development is to be pursued and realised over the next 15 years, and the contributions of Indigenous peoples are essential to achieving these goals. Indigenous peoples can be found in practically every region of the world, living on ancestral homelands in major cities, rainforests, mountain regions, desert plains, the arctic, and small Pacific Islands. Their languages, knowledges, and values are rooted in the landscapes and natural resources within their territories. However, many Indigenous peoples are now minorities within their homelands and globally, and there is a dearth of research based on Indigenous epistemologies and methodologies. Furthermore, academic research on Indigenous peoples is typically based on western lenses. Thus, the paucity of Indigenous methodologies within mainstream research discourses present challenges for implementing practical research designs and interpretations that can address epistemological distinctiveness within Indigenous communities. There is therefore the need to articulate, as well as bring to the nexus of research aimed at fostering sustainable development, a decolonising perspective in research design and practice. This is what this book wants to achieve. The contributions critically reflect on Indigenous approaches to research design and implementation, towards achieving the sustainable development goals, as well as the associated challenges and opportunities. The contributions also advanced knowledge, theory, and practice of Indigenous methodologies for sustainable development.

The aim of the paper is to introduce the reader to the activities and diversity of the Theatre Institute in Bratislava in the field of non-formal education for children, youth, professionals, as well as the wider public in the field of performing arts on specific educational projects. The study also attempts to define non-formal education as an activity that develops young people's traditional knowledge and experience of theatre, connecting and enriching their knowledge of contemporary theatre production. It also intends to name informal education as a possible source of information, a tool used to link theoretical knowledge of theatre with lived experience and personal experience. The study assumes that the use of a non-formal education method can provide a space for the active leisure of youth developing creativity, communication, and a diversity of thought, and at the same time serve as an enrichment of the educational process in the field of performing arts in schools.

The main objective of this article is to introduce the case of the Puel Nahuelbuta Indigenous Development Area (Mapuche, Chile) as a design practice that fosters local autonomy and, at the same time, contributes to the debate on radical alternative imaginaries towards post-patriarchal and post-capitalist social and cultural relations. In this context, the Az Mapu (knowledge of the natural order of the territory) rationality is important as a concept in the right way round indigenous territory and its governance. A second factor that stabilises the design practice of local autonomy is Kimün (ancestral philosophy or wisdom). Ixtrofil Mogen (living in biodiversity) and Küme Mogen (living well/good living), being the ability to reflect according to the experiences, knowledge and circumstances faced by a person or group, are central. The questioning of these notions highlights the controversy between social justice, indigenous social work and indigenous traditional knowledge.

This open access book presents the most current research results and knowledge from five multidisciplinary themes: Vulnerability of Arctic Environments, Vulnerability of Arctic Societies, Local and Traditional Knowledge, Building Long-term Human Capacity, New Markets for the Arctic, including tourism and safety. The themes are those discussed at the first ever UArctic Congress Science Section, St. Petersburg, Russia, September 2016. Traditional olive orchards account for a large share of the area under olives in the EU, particularly in marginal areas. Traditional olive growing can survive only by improving olive farmer incomes and recognizing its multifunctional role. Italy is the second largest olive oil producer of the European Union, and Umbria can be considered as one of the most interesting regions because of the high quality production of extra virgin olive oil and a close connection with traditional knowledge and the local environment. The regional olive oil chain involves about 30,000 farms growing olive trees covering about 27,000 ha and including 270 oil mills. The olive oil production phase comprises the extraction of the oil and additional by-products (water, pomace and husk). By-product management is very important; the olive oil mill wastes have a great impact on soil and water environments because of high phyto-toxicity (phenol, lipid and organic acids). On the other hand, such wastes may be potentially valuable.

Batik has a strong background with the nation and the people of Indonesia in all fields and forms of culture and everyday life. Copyright Act No. 28 of 2014 Section 38 (1) which stipulates that copyright to the traditional art of batik in Indonesia, the copyright is held by the state. During the system has not been formed for the protection of Traditional Knowledge, clearly, the whole intellectual creations are based on tradition can refer to the provisions in the UUHC. The protection provided is not confined to the art of batik, but also for folklore and all works of popular culture that became property of the people Indonesia. Indonesian government to provide legal protection to folklore including the art of batik to prevent monopolistic practices or the commercialization and actions damaging or commercial use without permission of the Republic of Indonesia as a copyright holder. This effort is intended to avoid any action that could damage the foreign party of Indonesia's traditional cultural values.

The present study aims at evaluating how YouTube users understand, negotiate and appropriate science-related knowledge on YouTube. It is informed by the qualitative analysis of post-video discussions around visual scenarios of sea-level rise (SLR) triggered by climate change. On the one hand, the SLR maps have an exemplary status as contemporary visualizations of climate change risks, beyond traditional image categories such as scientific or popular imagery. YouTube, on the other hand, is a convenient media environment to investigate the situated appropriation of such visual knowledge, considering its increasing relevance as a navigational platform to provide, search, consume and debate science-related information. The paper draws on media practice theory and operationalizes digital methods and qualitative coding informed by Grounded Theory. It characterizes a number of communicative practices of articulated knowledge appropriation regarding climate knowledge. This includes "locating impacts," "demanding representation," "envisioning further," "debating future action," "relativizing the information," "challenging the reality of anthropogenic climate change," "embedding popular narratives," "attributing to politics," and "insulting others." The article then discusses broader questions posed by the comments and related to the appropriation and discursive negotiation of knowledge within online video-sharing platforms. Ambiguity is identified as a major feature within the practice of science-related information retrieval and knowledge appropriation on YouTube. This consideration then serves as an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between information credibility and knowledge appropriation in the age of the digital. Findings suggest that ambiguity of information can have a positive impact on problem definition, future imagination and the discursive negotiation of climate change.

The epidemic of overweight and obesity poses a global challenge to chronic disease prevention, driven by increased consumption of energy-dense, fatty foods and a rise in physical inactivity due to sedentary lifestyles. Westernisation, urbanisation, and eroding traditional values contribute to this issue, leading to childhood obesity persisting into adulthood and triggering various diseases. Middle and low-income countries face a double disease burden, grappling with infectious and non-communicable diseases due to escalating obesity rates. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes towards dietary risk factors and the prevalence of obesity among newly admitted undergraduates at Osun State University, Nigeria. The findings revealed a relatively low prevalence of obesity (4.7%) among the studied population, with encouraging knowledge about obesity among the students. Socio-demographic factors such as family standard of living and parents' were found to influence obesity among undergraduates. However, limited community exercise facilities, poverty, and poor nutritional education contribute to poor dietary habits. Further efforts are needed to address obesity in this population and its potential impact on health and the economy. Stakeholders should support childhood obesity prevention interventions, including marketing and advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods and beverages adolescents consume.The research employed a descriptive cross-sectional study design, sampling 320 participants from three university campuses through a multistage sampling method. Data collection was facilitated through a semi-structured questionnaire administered to themselves. The data was analysed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate approaches.The 320 respondents were 47.8% male and 52.2% female; a more significant percentage were 15-19 years old. 8 out of 10 respondents had good knowledge, and the attitude of the respondents was significantly associated with their age and religion, such that the respondents between 15-19 years of age and the Muslims were more likely to have good knowledge than their counterparts.Family standard of living (father and mother occupational status) was the socio-demographic factor influencing obesity among Osun State University undergraduate students. Adequate intervention is required to enable adolescents and their parents/guardians to understand the health-related problems they are prone to by being obese. Concerned stakeholders should support childhood obesity prevention interventions such as marketing and advertising restrictions on unhealthy foods and fizzy drinks adolescents consume.

Abstract
Tibetans in twenty-first-century China have engaged in an increasingly high-profile campaign to promote language purity. In this purity campaign, Tibetan comedians and rappers have encouraged their audiences to speak pure Tibetan, and a host of neologisms have been coined to help people speak Tibetan even in modern contexts. Although coining new terms involves tremendous innovation, Tibetans almost uniformly view purism in this fashion as promoting traditional knowledge and practices considered to be under threat. This paper examines Tibetan media discourses on language purity to understand the development of new metadiscursive regimes in Tibet that link otherwise contemporary values like language purity with the preservation of Tibetan traditions.

The rhetorician and philosopher Richard Weaver has been an unfairly marginalized figure in rhetorical studies, consigned to the margins for his conservative political views and insistence upon the reality of Platonic transcendental forms. In this dissertation, I advance an argument that Weaver is not only a major figure who deserves reexamination, but also that a true understanding of Weaver must be based upon his education and training by the Southern Agrarian writers, critics, and poets. Analyzing Weaver's writings through the framework of Agrarian thought, I use the categories of practice (practical and traditional knowledge), place (geographic identity), and solidarity (societal common purpose) to suggest new ways forward for rhetorical studies, rhetorical education, and civic life.

'Globalisation', driven by neoliberal‐based policies, can be seen to have significant impacts on ethnobotanical practices, particularly through the commercialisation of traditional knowledge and rise in identity‐based social movements. Despite its relative political and economic isolation in comparison to more 'neoliberalised' areas of Latin America, local‐level shifts occurring in post‐Soviet Cuba are similar to those occurring elsewhere in the region. Afro‐Cuban ritual activities have proliferated, particularly in Havana, leading to an increased dependence on the rich magico‐medicinal pharmacopoeias employed in hybridised religions such as santería and palo monte – suggesting that 'globalisation' may have profound, albeit indirect, implications for even the most economically marginalised countries such as Cuba.

The increasing conviction of which the education is the element key to generate substantial changes capablly of creating social transformations and of advancing towards the universalization of the rights, it has been allowed that the governments of the different countries should elaborate educational policies that break the traditional schemes of the educational process. In this respect, the school and the educational management play a very important paper to construct a just company, where the knowledge is an indicator of progress that it transforms to the company. For such a motive, this test is argued by theories and legal elements that allow to raise the need to generate innovative and creative theories in the managerial paradigm. ; La creciente convicción de que la educación es el elemento clave para generar cambios sustanciales capaz de crear transformaciones sociales y avanzar hacia la universalización de los derechos, ha permitido que los gobiernos de los distintos países elaboren políticas educativas que rompan los esquemas tradicionales del proceso educativo. En este sentido, la escuela y la gerencia educativa juegan un papel muy importante para construir una sociedad justa, donde el conocimiento sea un indicador de progreso que transforme a la sociedad. Por tal motivo, este ensayo se argumenta con teorías y elementos legales que permiten plantear la necesidad de generar teorías innovadoras y creadoras en el paradigma gerencial.

International audience ; BackgroundMalaria is a major health problem in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) with high transmission in remote and forest areas, particularly in the South. The military is at risk of malaria infection especially those deployed in forest areas. This study determined the prevalence of malaria infection and assessed knowledge, perception, and preventive and treatment behavior regarding malaria among military personnel in two southern provinces in Lao PDR.MethodsQuantitative and qualitative approaches were undertaken in Champasak and Attapeu provinces in 2017. From 313 military personnel, quantitative data were collected through questionnaire-based interviews and blood samples used for parasite detection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Qualitative data were collected through 7 focus group discussions and 17 in-depth interviews among 49 military personnel. Fisher's exact test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to assess the association between malaria infection and participant characteristics. Content analysis for qualitative data was performed to explore perception and treatment behaviors regarding malaria.ResultsThe prevalence of malaria infection was 11.2% (Plasmodium falciparum: 1.3%, Plasmodium vivax: 9.3% and mixed infections: 0.6%). Many participants understood that malaria is transmitted through mosquito bites, although they did not necessarily know the name of vector mosquitoes (Anopheles). Surprisingly, more than a half also believed that malaria is transmitted through drinking stream water. One-third of the participants used long-lasting insecticidal nets. Due to limited supply, participants were often unable to use mosquito repellent and coils when necessary. Because participants were unable to receive timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment for malaria in their camps, they commonly practiced self-treatment using antibiotics, painkillers, and/or traditional medicines. They only go to a healthcare facility through their supervisor if their conditions worsen.ConclusionsThe prevalence of symptomatic and asymptomatic malaria was conspicuous among military in forest areas. Many participants believed that malaria is transmitted not only by mosquito bites but also from drinking stream water. Preventive equipment was often insufficient. Self-treatment was practiced before referring to healthcare facility. To further prevent military from contracting malaria, the National Malaria Control Program and military body should provide adequate and suitable health education, protective equipment, and on-site malaria case management.
