The cross-border cooperation (CBC) has been subject of study since eighties, and there is a wide empirical research since the implementation of first community initiatives like Interreg, receiving much of attention from the institutional realm. However, in last decade there has been an interest in the study of CBC from different disciplines which try to deliver the reaiity of day to day in border regions and the cross-border cooperation focused in the study of identities, border citizens' perspective and informal border relations. At the same time, the study of social capital (SC) has emerged in the last decades and is applied to diverse fields of interest. Among them the cross-border cooperation is a new and interesting area of research. The SC refers to the study of social relations and aspects like trust that facilitate the collective action. Social capita! can be approached in its cognitive (trust, norms), and/or structural (networks) dimension with the development of the social network analysis, an empirical mathematic method that explains systematically how with the investment on networks or relations social actors are capable to obtain benefits or to pursuit a certain collective action. In this context, this thesis tries to unify the institutional and more formal approach of CBC with a more social and informal based on SC theories and application of network analysis to offer a new approach to the study of CBC. The main goal is to study the construction of the cross-border social capital emerged from the institutional cross- border cooperation, focused on experts and institutions participating in EU cross-border cooperation; and to compare how is developed this cross-border social capita! in two different cross-border regions: Alentejo-Algarve- Andalucla and Southern Finland-Estonia. The methodology is qualitative-quantitative, using first a semi-structured interviews with a questionnaire and a module of social network analysis applied to 45 experts on CBC; second, the network analysis of the secondary data of approved projects of the interreg A programme 2007-2013 in each cross-border region. This research aims to contribute to the lack of research from sociology and social capital on cross-border cooperation. From another prism of analysis results will try to shed some light into the reaiity of day to day CBC in these two different and distant cross-border regions within the European Union. ; La cooperación transfronteriza (CTF) ha sido objeto de estudio desde los ochenta, y hay una amplia investigación desde el desarrollo de los primeros programas Interreg, recibiendo gran interés sobre todo en el marco institucional. Sin embargo, en las ultimo décadas ha habido un gran interés en el estudio de la CTF desde distintas disciplinas que tratan de abordar la realidad del día a día en la regiones fronterizas y ia cooperación transfronteriza centrada más en el estudio de identidades, 1a visión de ios ciudadanos y las relaciones fronterizas informales. Al mismo tiempo, el estudio del capital social (CS) ha surgido en las últimas décadas y ha sido aplicado a distintos campos de interés. Entre ellos, la cooperación transfronteriza es un campo nuevo e interesante de investigación. El CS insta al estudio de relaciones sociales y aspectos como la confianza, que facilitan la acción colectiva. El CS puede ser abordado en su dimensión cognitiva (confianza, normas) y/o estructural (redes) con el desarrollo del análisis de redes sociales, un método empírico matemático que explica sistemáticamente como con la inversión en redes o relaciones sociales los actores sociales son capaces de obtener beneficios o alcanzar una determinada acción colectiva. En este contexto esta tesis intenta unificar el estudio de la cooperación transfronteriza más institucional y formal con e! estudio social e informal basado en teorías del capital social y el uso del análisis de redes sociales. Para ofrecer un nuevo enfoque a la investigación de la CTF. El principal objetivo es abordar la construcción del capital social transfronterizo que surge de la cooperación transfronteriza institucional a través de los expertos y las instituciones que participan en la cooperación transfronteriza de la UE, y comparar como se desarrolla este capital social transfronterizo en dos regiones transfronterizas distintas: Alentejo-Algarve-Andalucía y Sur de Finlandla-Estonia. La metodología usada es cuantitativa-cualitativa, basada primero en entrevistas semiestructuradas con un cuestionario y un módulo de análisis de redes aplicado a 45 expertos en CTF; segundo, el análisis de redes de datos secundarios de los proyectos aprobados en los programas Interreg 2007-2013 en cada reglón transfronteriza. Esta investigación persigue contribuir a la falta de investigación desde la sociología y el capital social en el ámbito de la cooperación transfronteriza. Desde otro prisma de análisis los resultados intentaran ofrecen alguna luz sobre la realidad de CTF en el día a día en estas dos regiones distintas y distantes dentro de la UE.

Las multitudes inteligentes son grupos de individuos que se movilizan gracias a las nuevas potencialidades que ofrecen las tecnologías de la información y el conocimiento. La acción de estas multitudes ha sido objeto de estudio por su capacidad de incidencia en el ámbito político-social, con sonadas movilizaciones como la que derrocó al presidente filipino Joseph Estrada en 2001 o la organizada el 13 de Marzo de 2004 delante de la sede del Partido Popular en plena jornada de reflexión y dos días después del ataque Islamista del 11M. A pesar del interés académico, la acción de las multitudes inteligentes no se ha abordado desde su capacidad de construcción del espacio urbano en el que desarrolla sus movilizaciones. Desde esta vocación explicativa espacial, la presente investigación pretende desentrañar las lógicas, prácticas y significados que la acción colectiva de las multitudes inteligentes realiza y otorga en y al espacio urbano. Nuestro objetivo es establecer si estas movilizaciones tienen peso específico en los procesos dialécticos implicados en la construcción social del espacio urbano que, paradigmáticamente, hemos identificado en las dinámicas de confrontación entre espacios de resistencia y espacios abstractos. The action of these masses has been studied for their capacity to influence the political and social mobilization with high-profile as that ousted Philippine President Joseph Estrada in 2001 or held on March 13, 2004 in front of the Partido Popular headquarters the day of reflection and two days after the Islamist attacks of the M11. Despite the academic interest, the action of Smart Mobs has not been addressed since its capacity building of urban space in which to develop their mobilizations. From this vocation explanatory space, this research aims to unravel the logic, practices and meanings that the collective action of Smart Mobs and grants in place and the urban space. Our goal is to establish whether these demonstrations have weight in the dialectical processes involved in the social construction of urban space, paradigmatically, we have identified the dynamics of confrontation between spaces of resistance and abstract spaces. We therefore performed a study on the mobilization of Smart Mobs most important years in Spain: the 15M movement and the Acampada Sol settlement.

The socialfeel of students is expressed both in the self-appraisal of theirmaterial position and level of profits and in their emotionalreaction on the terms of the life in the dominant feelings, moods.Therefore maintenance of social feel of students is necessary tocharacterize on two basic aspects: satisfaction by the terms oflife(estimation of satisfaction of necessities of physical existence)and the socially-psychological comfort(estimation of satisfactionof necessities of social existence). A social feel also shows up incharacter and degree of social activity of students.Undertaken sociological research showed that a level ofsocial feel of students of the Dnepropetrovsk national universityon in general is satisfactory. Basic influence on the social feel ofstudent is rendered by family. Students that live in families withthe middle and high level of sufficiency have a good feel, theyare sure in their future, in possibility to do a career, earn money.They rely on force of social connections of the parents. Studentsfrom more subzero layers of society are less optimistic. Part ofthem simply lives in poverty, being out of money on everydaycharges, including on a valuable feed. They prefer to combinework with studies, often in a damage to last. Meaningfulnessof quality of education for them retreats on the second planas compared to the material questions of survival. "Many accounts of British development since 1945 have attempted to discover why Britain experienced slower rates of economic growth than other Western European countries. In many cases, the explanation for this phenomenon has been attributed to the high level of defence spending that successive British post-war governments adhered to. Yet is it fair to assume that Britain's relative economic decline could have been prevented if policy makers had not spent so much on defence? Examining aspects of the political economy and economic impact of British defence expenditure in the period of the first cold war (1945-1955), this book challenges these widespread assumptions, looking in detail at the link between defence spending and economic decline. In contrast to earlier studies, Till Geiger not only analyses the British effort within the framework of Anglo-American relations, but also places it within the wider context of European integration. By reconsidering the previously accepted explanation of the economic impact of the British defence effort during the immediate post-war period, this book convincingly suggests that British foreign policy-makers retained a large defence budget to offset a sense of increased national vulnerability, brought about by a reduction in Britain's economic strength due to her war effort. Furthermore, it is shown that although this level of military spending may have slightly hampered post-war recovery, it was not in itself responsible for the decline of the British economy."--Provided by publisher.
Background: The increasing number of elderly becomes the main problem related with physical, economy and social conditions. Elderly who lives in isolated area will aggravate their living process. Community of Tionghoa ethnic who live in the Saliung mountain is a group of community who have ever been eliminated socially or politically.Objective: This research was aimed to find out problems that related with way of living, hygiene and health codition of elderly in the household of Tionghoa ethnics community.Method: This was a qualitative research that used social culture approach and intrinsic case study (participatory) design. This research was implemented in Saliung mountain range in the village of Sedau, sub district of South Singkawang, West Kalimantan. The sought variable was way of living, knowledge, attitude and personal hygiene and health behavior. Information was obtained from elderly, community, health officer, village officials, tradition and culture institution that oriented on triangulation. Data was presented in the form of diagram, documentation, direct reference and description.Result: This research was succeed in exploring knowledge, attitude and behavior of elderly in the household and various aspects that were related with the living of elderly and community of Tionghoa ethnic generally, including personal hygiene as the effect of high work productivity so that time and opportunity is very limited for for personal care.Conclusion: Problems of way of living, personal hygiene and health condition of Tionghoa ethnic community in Saliung mountain were related with perspectives in order health intervention to succeed.Keyword: way of living, cleanliness and healthy treatment of Tionghoa Saliung elderly, social culture.
The need and willingness to change motivates decision-makers and practitioners in the UK to take decisive integrationoriented measures. The country has never succeeded in developing its own original policy in this area. The first steps were taken in 2004 with the publication of the Indicators of Integration, but it was onlyin recent years that work on integration management has been intensified. There is a clear departure from focusing on individual aspects of integration and implementing a problem management system in a broader context. This is reflected in the publication of the Home Office Indicators for Integration framework (2019). The document is based on the 2004 version, but presents it in terms of the Theory of Change, which was adopted as the basis for designing and verifying the integration process in the UK. The aim of the paperis to compare the Integration Indicators of 2004 with the new version in order to identify the progress of work on the integration system and the change in the approach to the problem.
This book focuses on Shine, a musical performance about how energy, humanity, and climate are interrelated. Weaving together climate science and artistic expression, it results in a funny and powerful story spanning 300 million years. The first half is professionally scripted, composed, and choreographed to convey how our use of fossil fuels is impacting our climate. The second half - our future story - is authored by local youth to generate solutions for their city's resilience. In rehearsing the musical, participants themselves embody aspects of climate science and human development. Ultimately, it demonstrates that performance can be a dynamic tool for youth to contribute to their community's resilience. Educators can use this book to guide youth in creative expression based on (or inspired by) Shine. Included are the script, links to the music and video of the performance, materials for building curricula, interviews with collaborators, and lessons learned along Shine's year-long international tour. An essential dimension of the Cold War took place in the realm of ideas and culture. While much work exists on cinema, relatively little research has been conducted on this subject in relation to television, despite the latter being a technology and popular cultural form that emerged during this period. This book rectifies that absence by examining the impact of the Cold War on entertainment television, and underlines the comparative aspect by studying programs from both blocs - without forgetting, of course, the outsize impact of American television. Although most of the focus is on the two main protagonists, the US and the USSR, chapters also consider programming from the UK, Czechoslovakia, Romania, and both East and West Germany.This book represents a contribution to the debate about the cultural Cold War through a rigorously comparative analysis of the two blocs. For this reason, the approach used is thematic. The study begins by considering the subject of censorship, and then goes on to look at the very particular case of the two Germanys. A series of comparative genre studies follow, including police and war, variety shows, and documentaries and docudramas. Perhaps surprisingly, the similarities are often greater than the differences between television in the two blocs

Sample syllabus Course Title: A Sociological Analysis of Terrorism and Counterterrorism Course Description In this course, we will explore the most relevant issues around terrorism and counterterrorism policies. Although we will largely approach this topic from a sociological perspective, this study is quite interdisciplinary. Consequently, we will be reading works from other academic disciplines, including history, psychology, political science, and economics. There are four major areas that any analysis of terrorism, to be comprehensive, should take into account: the definition of terrorism; its history and classification; its explanations; and an assessment of consequences related to counterterrorism. After an introduction to terrorism research (part 1), we will discuss the controversies related to the definition of terrorism (part 2) and to data collection (part 3), both necessary for an understanding of tendencies concerning terrorist incidents. A historical overview (part 4) will give us some preliminary information about the variety of terrorist campaigns – information that prepares us for the next exercise (part 5): grouping terrorist organisations by different types. Looking in more depth at the evolution of terrorism in the last decade, we will examine the case of Al‐Qaeda (part 6), and how this and other organisations exploit old and new media, especially the Internet (part 7). The next chapter will be the explanation of terrorism, that is, the specification of the main psychological, political, cultural, and religious factors underlying the emergence of a terrorist organisation and the unfolding of a terrorist campaign. Suicide terrorism will be used as a case study. More specifically, we will approach terrorism by examining the motivations and rationality of terrorist organisations (part 8), of the communities that support them (part 9), and of those who join them (part 10). How can we define terrorism? What political controversies affect the definition of terrorism? When comparing different terrorism data sets, what kinds of diagnoses can we make on the tendencies of terrorist incidents in the last decade? How has terrorism changed in history? Based on the literature concerning Al‐Qaeda's ideology, strategies, and structures, what continuities and discontinuities can we identify with respect to previous forms of terrorism? When dealing with the explanation of terrorism, what are the most significant factors to be taken into account? How can we learn from the current literature on suicide terrorism in order to build a comprehensive model for its explanation? Given the legislative and military responses to September 11 and subsequent attacks (e.g. the 2005 London bombings), what have been the legal consequences affecting our societies and the strategic implications for combating and preventing terrorist violence?

How do people come to think of themselves as part of a nation? Dramas of Nationhood identifies a fantastic cultural form that binds together the Egyptian nation-television serials. These melodramatic programs-like soap operas but more closely tied to political and social issues than their Western counterparts-have been shown on television in Egypt for more than thirty years. In this book, Lila Abu-Lughod examines the shifting politics of these serials and the way their contents both reflect and seek to direct the changing course of Islam, gender relations, and everyday life in this Middle Eastern nation. Representing a decade's worth of research, Dramas of Nationhood makes a case for the importance of studying television to answer larger questions about culture, power, and modern self-fashionings. Abu-Lughod explores the elements of developmentalist ideology and the visions of national progress that once dominated Egyptian television-now experiencing a crisis. She discusses the broadcasts in rich detail, from the generic emotional qualities of TV serials and the depictions of authentic national culture, to the debates inflamed by their deliberate strategies for combating religious extremism.
