Malaysia ist ein schnell wachsendes Entwicklungsland, dass trotz gelegentlicher Wirtschaftskrisen seine rasche Entwicklung fortsetzt. Für die vielfältigen Großprojekte sind hochqualifizierte Facharbeiter, Ingenieure, Verwaltungsbeamte und Freiberufler erforderlich. Die z. Zt. herrschende Vollbeschäftigung hat die Lücken im Bildungssystem deutlich werden lassen. Das malaiische Bildungs- und Erziehungssystem ist aufgrund der kolonialen Vergangenheit dem britischen angeglichen. Das vorliegende Arbeitspapier kommentiert die wichtigsten Eckdaten des malaiischen Hochschulwesens hinsichtlich u.a.folgender Aspekte: der Ausbildungsmarkt; Hochschulpolitik; Studentenzahl und Fächerverteilung; Auslandsstudium und Regierungsstipendien; die Einrichtung von Hochschulen nach deutschem Muster.
