"From the images carved and painted to the buildings edified, from liturgical objects to reliquaries and tombs, from books to personal objects of piety, this book reflects the many domains where the relation between materiality and devotion can be a prospect and a problem. It intersects the material, functional, performative, and aesthetic dimensions with the different readings it calls for, the cognitive and emotional apprehensions, the representations (erudite and popular) it associates with, the practices that it sustains, the memories that polarize and legitimize, the powers that were affirmed through it. It discloses the diversity of variants such as wealth and social position, literate training, and gender differences"--
"Green City Rising is an ethnographic account of collective organizing for environmental justice in an era of growing concern about environmental and climate challenges. The conventional sustainability paradigm promises improved environmental conditions for all, such as fresh air and clean water, walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, green space access, and protection from climate crises. Yet, without particular interventions, the pursuit of such environmental amenities often contributes to displacement and further harm for communities that have historically borne the brunt of land theft, racial capitalism, and toxic industries. Drawing on the work of an alliance of grassroots organizations called the Portland Harbor Community Coalition (PHCC), Erin Goodling shows how communities have come together across lines of race and class to work for a more just, green future in Portland, Oregon. Green City Rising reveals that the violence of settler colonialism and white supremacy are far from endpoints: a collective vision for a better future is emerging, and ordinary people are building the understanding, skills, and relationships necessary to usher it in"--
Recent debates about the return of colonially looted heritage have furthered the discussions on decolonisation around the world, and have reignited questions surrounding "what is, and who owns, cultural heritage". These discourses in the meaning, production and management of heritage - with a growing presence of themes that address "Latinities" - have gained greater visibility in Latin America and the Caribbean, as challenges surrounding cultural heritage arise more prominently worldwide. The attention on this region aims to contextualise the various theoretical, empirical, and critical perspectives in relation to the negotiation of decolonisation. Hence, this book focuses on the analysis of diverse modes of confronting the power underlying colonial heritage that can contribute to pushing boundaries and persuading changes in pre-established definitions of political thought and local identities. To this end, the chapters in this book focus on a wide scope of topics, ranging from the repatriation and restitution of cultural heritage, and diasporic movements to decolonial practices around monuments, museums, and education. In so doing, this volume challenges stereotypes that made Latin America and the Caribbean a space of mere reproducibility of external ideas, and instead provides a space to show current decolonial perspectives and practices developed in the region that will enrich the international debate on the contestation of colonial legacies and decolonisation of cultural heritage
"Both pro- and anticapitalists, despite the ferocity of their disagreements, tend to concur that selfishness is essential to capitalism. In Infinite Greed, Adrian Johnston argues that this consensus is mistaken. Utilizing a theoretical synthesis of Marxism and psychoanalysis, Johnston reveals how the relentless pursuit of profits is not really about pandering to the acquisitiveness of single persons. Instead, capitalism's strange "infinite greed" demands that individuals sacrifice their pleasures, wellbeing, and even themselves so as to service inhuman capital itself. All capitalist subjects are compelled to obey capital's cold imperative to accumulate ever more of it in perpetuity and without limits-and also without regard for the consequences of this accumulation for everyone and everything else. Considering such contemporary crises as spiraling wealth inequality, leaving a steadily growing mass of humanity in wretched penury, as well as the profit-driven prospect of a looming ecological apocalypse, selfishness, as the rational self-interest of the numerical majority of individual persons, would dictate putting a stop to capitalism. Infinite Greed is distinctive in a number of respects. Whereas both the classical Freudian Marxism associated with the Frankfurt School as well as more recent Lacanian Marxisms, notably Slavoj Žižek's, and nonclassical European Marxisms such as those of Antonio Gramsci and Ernst Bloch, focus on such extra-economic dimensions as ideologies and cultural phenomena, this book pairs Freudian and Lacanian concepts with the economic heart of Marx's historical materialism. In particular, by bringing together the Marxian critique of political economy with psychoanalytic metapsychology, Adrian Johnston brings to light the complex intertwining of political and libidinal economies that keep us invested and complicit in perpetuating capitalism and its ills. Until today's leftists recenter their theory and practice on the largely and unwisely neglected terrain of the economy--on class struggle and related determinants of our politics and culture--our four-plus decades of political setbacks and defeats will continue unabated."
