The purposes of this research were to examine the students' Awareness and Behavior on Mobile Phone Hazardous Waste Management(ABMPWM) comparative studies of dependent variables among the levels of independent variables and their Corresponding correlation's between their exposure to information and ABMPWM and to yield the appropriate means for managing mobile phone waste. The survey research using self-administered questionnaires was conducted on 450 random samples from 264,027 students with study standing at junior and senior high school in Bangkok. The analytical statistical methods used were percentage, mode, mean, S.D. (Standard Deviation), T-Test, F-Test, One-way ANOVA Analysis, Correlation Analysis and Regression Analysis & Prediction Model. The level of the Awareness on Mobile Phone Hazardous Waste Management index (AMPHWM index) was high. The AMPHWM index of men was higher than women and significance difference (p<.05). The group of 13-14years of age had AMPHWM index at the highest level. The samples of junior high school students had higher AMPHWMindex than the group of senior high school students. The group of students who bought the mobile phone themselves had higher AMPHWM index than the others. The group of students belonging the mobile phone with 15,000 baht had higher AMPHWM index than the low price. The group of students paying service charge monthly about 301-500 had higher AMPHWM index than the group paying more or less. The group of exposure to information had higher AMPHWM than no exposure to information group. Most of students received information from T.V. The Awareness on Management of Mobile Phone Waste of the group of exposure to information and the group did not expose to information had correlation to the Behavior on Management of Mobile Phone Waste. The level of the Behavior on Mobile Phone Hazardous Waste Management index (BMPHWM index) was average. The BMPHWM index of men was higher than women. The group of 13-14 years of age had higher than the others. The samples of junior high school students had higher BMPHWM index than the group of senior high school students. The group of students who bought the mobile phone themselves had higher BMPHWM index than the others. The group of students belonging the mobile phone with more 8,001-15,000 baht had higher BMPHWM index than the lower and higher price. The group of students paying service charge monthly about 301-500 had higher BMPHWM than the group paying more or less. The group of exposure to information had higher BMPHWM index than no exposure to information group. The group of students received information from internet or electric media had higher BMPHWM index than the group students who received the information from the others.There were 3 method and strategy on the mobile phone waste management as follows :The behavior and operation by the accomplice for suitable management should cover 6 persons and organization groups. They were : (1) The youth using mobile phone. (2) Family or guardian of the youth using mobile phone. (3) The education institutes and communities of the youth living. (4) The stores (selling the mobile phone) (5) The distributors and producer of the mobile phone. (6) The government sectors and private sectors. Mengentaskan penduduk dari lingkaran kemiskinan diperlukan kebijaksanaan, organisasi, komitmen dan program, serta pendekatan yang tepat, maka diluncurkan program khusus penanggulangan kemiskinan dengan mendorong semangat keswadayaan dan kemandirian penduduk miskin yang produktif untuk bersama melepaskan diri dari kemiskinan. Dalam program khusus ini dibentuk kelompok-kelompok swadaya dengan semangata kooperatif yang dikembangkan di kalangan masyarakat desa. Kebijaksanaan tersebut dituangkan dalam program PNPM-MPd. Pertanyaan penelitiannya adalah bagaimana perencanaan PNPM-MPd di kabupaten Cirebon? Bagaimana pelaksanaan PNPM-MPd di kabupaten cirebon ? dan apakah manfaat, kendala pelaksanaan PNPM-MPd di kabupaten Cirebon? Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pemberdayaan ekonomi melalui pelaksanaan PNPM-MPd di kabupaten Cirebon, untuk mengetahui kondisi ekonomi masyarakat desa di kabupaten Cirebon. Pendekatan yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan yuridis kualitatif, pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara observasi, wawancara, dan studi kepustakaan, dengan lokasi penelitian dalam pembahasan ini adalah masyarakat desa di kabupaten Cirebon. Hasil penelitian ini adalah kondisi ekonomi masyarakat di beberapa desa di kabupaten Cirebon dalam keadaan perlu ditingkatkan dengan pemberdayaan ekonomi melalui PNPM-MPd yang meliputi tahap perencanaan yaitu MAD-soaialisasi, Musdes-sosialisasi, Pelantikan KPMD, Penggalian gagasan, Musdes khusus perempuan, Musdes perencanaan, Penulisan usulan, verifikasi usulan, MAD Prioritas usulan, Mad penetapan usulan, Musdes informasi hasil MAD, SKPD (satuan kerja perangkat desa), pelasanaan PNPM-MPd dilasanakan oleh Tim pelaksana teknis desa dan oleh Unit pelaksana kegiatan pada tingkat kecamatan yang masing-masing unit pelaksana Kegiatan mendampingi Sembilan desa. Manfaat PNPM-MPd bagi masyarakat desa di kabupaten Cirebon sebagai sarana pemberdayaan ekonomi masyarakat meningkat dari yang konervatif menjadi inovatif, meningkatnya kesejahteraan masyarakat miskin, terbukanya kesempatan kerja, sumberdaya manusia meningkat dari yang tidak mengerti manajemen keuangan menjadi mengerti dan diterapkan pada pekerjaan selanjutnya. Adapun yang menjadi kendala pelaksanaan PNPM-MPd adalah paradigma perempuan (istri) harus manut laki2(suami), usaha yang modalnya diperoleh dari pinjaman PNPM-MPd bangkrut, uang pinjaman dari PNPM-MPd dipakai ketua kelompok, pengaruh politik desa (akibat pemilihan kuwu) wacana dana hibah.Kata kunci: Pemberdayaan, Ekonomi, MasyarakatABSTRACTAwakening the citizen from the circle of the poverty needs the wisdom, organization, commitment, program, and the accurate approach. Therefore, the special program to abolish the poverty is needed. This program will encourage the passion of productive self-sufficiency and independence of the poor citizen to simultaneously release them from the poverty. In this special program, the groups of the self-help are established with the cooperative passion which is developed in the circle of the village citizen. That wisdom is put into the program of PNPM-MPd. The research questions are that how is the planning of the PNPM-MPd in the district of Cirebon? How is the implementation of the PNPM-MPd in the district of Cirebon? And what are the benefits, obstacles of the implementation of PNPM-MPd in the district of Cirebon? The aims of this research are to know the economic empowering through the implementation of PNPM-MPd in the district of Cirebon, to know the economic condition of the village citizen in the district of Cirebon. The approach used in this research is the judicial qualitative approach, the data collection is conducted through the observation, interview, documentation study, and the location of the research in this explanation is the village citizen of the Cirebon district. The result of this research is that the economic condition of the citizen in several villages in the district of Cirebon needs to be increased with the economic empowering through the program of PNPM-MPd which consists of the planning step, namely socialization of MAD (musyawarah antar desa), socialization of Musdes, KPMD inauguration, search of the suggestion priority, women special Musdes, Musdes of planning, suggestion writing, suggestion verification, MAD of the suggestion priority, Mad of suggestion decision, Musdes of result information of MAD, SKPD (satuan kerja perangkat desa), the implementation of the PNPM-MPd is conducted by the organizer technical team of the village and by the unit of event organizer in the level of sub-district that each of the organizer unit accompanies the nine villages. The benefit of the PNPM-MPd for the village citizen in the district of Cirebon is as the method of citizen economic empowering that increases from conerfative to be inovative, increases the prosperity of the poor people, opens the job vacancy, increases the human resources from those who do not understand the financial management to be those who understand and apply it in the next job. The obstacles of the PNPM-MPd implementation are that the paradigm that the women (wife) must obey the husband, the fund got from the debt of bankrupt PNPM-MPd, the fund got from the debt of bankrupt PNPM-MPd is used by the chief of the group, the influence of the village politic (the election of the village head), the discourse of the donation fund.Key words: empowering, economic, citizen
IMPORTANCE: The balance of mercury risk and nutritional benefit from fish intake during pregnancy for the metabolic health of offspring to date is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations of fish intake and mercury exposure during pregnancy with metabolic syndrome in children and alterations in biomarkers of inflammation in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based prospective birth cohort study used data from studies performed in 5 European countries (France, Greece, Norway, Spain, and the UK) between April 1, 2003, and February 26, 2016, as part of the Human Early Life Exposome (HELIX) project. Mothers and their singleton offspring were followed up until the children were aged 6 to 12 years. Data were analyzed between March 1 and August 2, 2019. EXPOSURES: Maternal fish intake during pregnancy (measured in times per week) was assessed using validated food frequency questionnaires, and maternal mercury concentration (measured in micrograms per liter) was assessed using maternal whole blood and cord blood samples. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: An aggregate metabolic syndrome score for children was calculated using the z scores of waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and levels of triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and insulin. A higher metabolic syndrome score (score range, -4.9 to 7.5) indicated a poorer metabolic profile. Three protein panels were used to measure several cytokines and adipokines in the plasma of children. RESULTS: The study included 805 mothers and their singleton children. Among mothers, the mean (SD) age at cohort inclusion or delivery of their infant was 31.3 (4.6) years. A total of 400 women (49.7%) had a high educational level, and 432 women (53.7%) were multiparous. Among children, the mean (SD) age was 8.4 (1.5) years (age range, 6-12 years). A total of 453 children (56.3%) were boys, and 734 children (91.2%) were of white race/ethnicity. Fish intake consistent with health recommendations (1 to 3 times per week) during pregnancy was associated with a 1-U decrease in metabolic syndrome score in children (β = -0.96; 95% CI, -1.49 to -0.42) compared with low fish consumption (<1 time per week) after adjusting for maternal mercury levels and other covariates. No further benefit was observed with fish intake of more than 3 times per week. A higher maternal mercury concentration was independently associated with an increase in the metabolic syndrome score of their offspring (β per 2-fold increase in mercury concentration = 0.18; 95% CI, 0.01-0.34). Compared with low fish intake, moderate and high fish intake during pregnancy were associated with reduced levels of proinflammatory cytokines and adipokines in children. An integrated analysis identified a cluster of children with increased susceptibility to metabolic disease, which was characterized by low fish consumption during pregnancy, high maternal mercury levels, decreased levels of adiponectin in children, and increased levels of leptin, tumor necrosis factor α, and the cytokines interleukin 6 and interleukin 1β in children. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht junge Erwachsene als Zielgruppe für den Bio-Lebensmittelmarkt. Das Wachstum des Bio-Marktes ging während der letzten Jahre mit einem deutlichen Wandel der Käuferschaft einher. Im Gegensatz zu den Anfängen der Bio-Vermarktung, als die meisten Bio-Käufer Anhänger der Vollwerternährung mit eher links-alternativem Bewusstsein waren und der Kauf von Bio-Produkten meist auch Ausdruck der politischen Einstellung war, finden sich heute vielfältigere Gründe für den Bio-Kauf und eine erweiterte Bio-Kundschaft. Diese zunehmende Heterogenität der Käufer führte u. a. auch zu differierenden Ansprüchen an die Produkte und an das Marketing im Bio-Bereich. Immer häufiger wird daher eine Segmentierung des Bio-Marktes in unterschiedliche Käufergruppen durchgeführt, die dann eine gezielte Ansprache ermöglicht. Eine interessante Zielgruppe für den Bio-Markt stellen junge Erwachsene dar. Bei ihnen handelt es sich nicht nur um eine große Kundengruppe, die sowohl heute als auch in Zukunft beträchtliche Umsätze tätigen kann, sondern es gehen auch entscheidende Konsum-Impulse von ihnen auf die übrige Bevölkerung aus. Über die Versorgung und Erziehung ihrer Kinder prägen sie einerseits das Ernährungs- und Konsumverhalten nachfolgender Generationen mit. Aber auch als Leitbild für andere Konsumenten setzen junge Menschen in der Gesellschaft vielfach Konsum-Trends, die dann übernommen werden (Diekhof 1999, S. 34f, Kumpf 1983, S. 282ff). In dieser Arbeit wurde daher die Zielgruppe der heutigen jungen Erwachsenen im Hinblick auf die Faktoren untersucht, die für den Bio-Konsum ausschlaggebend sind und anhand derer Empfehlungen für das Marketing abgeleitet werden können. Hierzu wurde zunächst eine theoretische Analyse des Bio-Marktes und der definierten Zielgruppe durchgeführt, in der vor allem die kaufverhaltensrelevanten Faktoren im Hinblick auf den Bio-Kauf herausgearbeitet und betrachtet wurden. Im Anschluss daran wurden mittels eines Methodenmix aus zwei quantitativen und einer qualitativen empirischen Untersuchung einige der Faktoren näher auf ihre Bedeutung im Hinblick auf die Konsumentscheidung für oder gegen Bio-Lebensmittel bei jungen Erwachsenen überprüft. Die erste Studie belegte mit Hilfe quantitativer Befragungsmethodik, dass fast ausschließlich hohe Bildungsschichten Bio-Produkte kannten und damit überhaupt in der Lage waren, Auskunft über das Image zu geben. Bei den Befragten überwog ein positives Image von Bio-Lebensmitteln. Jedoch wurde neben Assoziationen wie gesund , wohlschmeckend und modern in erster Linie der hohe Preis mit Bio-Lebensmitteln verbunden. Dieser konnte denn auch als die Hauptbarriere gegen den Bio-Kauf bei jungen Erwachsenen ermittelt werden. Weitere Gründe waren Zeitmangel, aber auch geringes Interesse, so dass letztlich trotz des guten Images nur etwa 11 % der Befragten regelmäßig Bio-Produkte kauften. Die befragten jungen Frauen waren dabei insgesamt gesundheitsbewusster und stärker motiviert, alternative Produkte zu kaufen, als die jungen Männer. Bei beiden Geschlechtern konnte in den höheren Altersgruppen ein stärkeres Interesse an Bio-Produkten beobachtet werden. Mit Hilfe der zweiten Studie konnten diese Ergebnisse, ebenfalls durch eine quantitative Befragung, erweitert werden. Es wurde nachgewiesen, dass die Veränderungen in den Lebensumständen eines jungen Erwachsenen sich z. T. stark auf das Ernährungs- und Lebensmittelkaufverhalten auswirken. In der Single-Phase, der ersten von drei betrachteten Phasen des Familienlebenszyklus, sind junge Erwachsene demnach i. d. R. keine Erfolg versprechende Zielgruppe für den Bio-Markt, da andere Lebensbereiche in dieser Zeit größere Bedeutung haben als die Ernährung. Während der zweiten Phase (Partnerschafts-Phase) kann das Interesse an Bio-Produkten aufgrund eines oft gestiegenen Qualitätsanspruches wachsen. In der dritten betrachteten Phase des Familienlebenszyklus (Phase mit Kindern) bestehen nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen die größten Chancen für eine erhöhte Bereitschaft zum Bio-Kauf. Diese steht v. a. im Zusammenhang mit der Verantwortung für die eigenen Kinder. Mit Hilfe der letzten Studie, einer qualitativen Befragung in Form problemzentrierter, teilbiographischer Einzelinterviews, wurde herausgearbeitet, dass die Entscheidung zum Konsum von Bio-Lebensmitteln bei jungen Erwachsenen sowohl von der Ernährung im Elternhaus, als auch von Bezugspersonen wie Freunden oder der Partnerin/dem Partner beeinflusst werden kann. Letztere erweisen sich oft als Anstoß für eigenen Bio-Konsum, jedoch müssen in jedem Fall mehrere Faktoren zusammenwirken um regelmäßigen Kauf zu initiieren. Da eine Beeinflussung dieser Faktoren durch Marketingaktivitäten nur begrenzt möglich ist, wurde geschlussfolgert, dass bei einem beträchtlichen Teil der jungen Erwachsenen unter den derzeitigen Bedingungen kaum Interesse für Bio-Produkte zu wecken ist. Obgleich es sich bei jungen Erwachsenen um eine interessante Zielgruppe mit großem Potenzial handelt, sollte daher nicht versucht werden, die gesamte Gruppe undifferenziert anzusprechen. Hierdurch würden unnötig hohe Ausgaben ohne Effekt getätigt. Die Empfehlung für das Marketing, mit der die Arbeit abschließt, lautete deshalb, in erster Linie auf die Segmente der Zielgruppe zu fokussieren, bei denen eine erhöhte Bereitschaft zur Auseinandersetzung mit der Thematik besteht. Dies sind kurz gefasst in erster Linie die älteren Segmente innerhalb der Gruppe junger Erwachsener mit höherem Bildungsstand. Insbesondere junge Erwachsene mit Kindern und vor allem Frauen sind dabei am ehesten Erfolg versprechende Zielgruppen. Durch die benannten Einflüsse auf andere Konsumenten und die Kinder kann so eine zwar langfristige aber auf Dauer effektive Ausweitung des Bio-Konsums bei jungen Erwachsenen erzielt werden. Zudem wurde eine veränderte Positionierung vorgeschlagen, die den untersch! iedlichen Ansprüchen dieser heterogenen Kundengruppe eher entspricht, um einen größeren Teil der jungen Erwachsenen dennoch zum Konsum zu motivieren. ; This study investigates young adults as a target fort he organic food market. The recent growth of the organic market was accompanied by a change in it s consumers. Unlike in the beginning of the marketing of organic food, when most of the organic consumers where wholefood consumers and left-wingers, whose buying behavior was expressing their political orientation. Today there are various reasons to buy organic food. This growing heterogeneity of consumer types consequently led as well to different demands regarding organic products and their marketing. Therefore, segmentation into different consumer groups is found more and more, so that consumers can be targeted better. An interesting target group for the organic market are young adults. Not only are they a large group of consumers with a high turnover today and in the future. But also they are having a high influence impulse on other consumer groups. By raising and educating their children, they form eating and consumption habits of following generations. Also, as opinion-leaders for many other consumers, young people often set consumption trends (Diekhof 1999, p.34f.; Kumpf 1983, p 282ff.) This study therefore investigates the target group of todays young adults to find factors that are relevant for their organic consumption and on which advice for the marketing can be given. A theoretical analysis of the organic market and for the defined target group was done first, in which the relevant factors for organic consumption were shown. Then two quantitative and one qualitative study followed to investigate some of the factors further, with respect to their influence on young consumers buying decisions for or against organic products. The first study proved that mostly people with a high educational level know organic products and thus were able to answer the questions. A positive image of organic products was dominant in this group. Besides healthy , tasty and modern , a high price was associated to organics in the first place. This proved to be the main barrier against organic consumption in this group. Further reasons were a lack of time and/or a lack of interest, so that despite the good image, only 11% of the interviewees regularly purchased organic food. Allover young women were more health conscious and had a stronger motivation to buy alternative products than the men. In both genders a higher interest could be found in higher age groups. The second study showed moreover, that changes in the life cycle had strong effects on the eating and consumption habits of young adults. According to the results, being single, young adults are not a promising target group for organics as other areas than food are more important in that stage of life. In the second phase of the life cycle of young adults, the life with a partner, the interest in organic food rises, as quality starts to matter. In the third phase of the life cycle, the life with own children, the interest in organic food becomes much higher, as there is a strong feeling of responsibility for the children. For the last study, a qualitative research in form of problem orientated, partly biographic one-to-one interviews was conducted. It could be shown, that the decision for organic consumption of young adults is connected to the food and eating habits of their childhood as well as to socially relevant persons like friends or the partner. Although the partner often is the reason to start thinking about organic food, to initiate regular consumption, more factors have to work together. These factors can only partly be influenced by marketing activities, so that is was concluded, that in a high percentage of young adults, no interest in organics can be initiated. Thus even if young adults are an important and interesting target group with high potential, the existing sub-groups should be addressed differently, so not to waste marketing efforts. The advice for the marketing of organic products is to focus on those segments, that are interested in the subject at all. These are the higher age-groups among the young people with a high educational level, especially those with children and women in the first place. Although this will have a long-term effect, it will cause a growth of the organic market. Also a different positioning was proposed to account for the different demands of the heterogeneous group of young adults and thus to motivate the different groups better to increase their organic consumption.
Diese Studie untersucht die Gründe und Probleme der Kinderheirat und deren Auswirkungen auf die Schulbildung von Mädchen im Mecha Distrikt von West Gojam, Amhara Region, Äthiopien, wo Kinderheirat die Regel ist und wo die Einbeziehung von Mädchen in die formale Bildung im nationalen, wie auch im regionalen Vergleich, gering ist. Diese Studie basiert auf primären und sekundären Methoden der Datensammlung. Die primäre Datensammlung dauerte sieben Monate von April 2003 bis Januar 2004 in zwei Feldforschungsphasen. Im ersten Monat wurden Vorab-Befragungen in Haushalten durchgeführt, mit deren Hilfe Grundinformationen gesammelt und Fokus-Familien ausgewählt wurden. In den folgenden Monaten wurden Tiefeninterviews in Fokus-Familien und mit Schlüsselinformanten durchgeführt, sowie die Zeit zu teilnehmender Beobachtung genutzt und es wurden Fallstudien und Diskussionen mit Fokus-Gruppen durchgeführt, begleitet von Video- und Foto-Dokumentation. Die Daten wurden also in der Feldforschung nach der "klassischen" Kombination mehrerer ethnologischer Methoden gesammelt. Ich habe meine ethnologischen Feldforschungen in zwei Bauernsiedlungen im Mecha District durchgeführt. Bachema, 5 km von der Distrikthauptstadt entfernt, befindet sich klimatisch in der Tiefland-Klimazone (qolla), während sich Rim, in etwa 40 km Entfernung von der Distrikthauptstadt, auf mittlere Höhe in der wäyna däga zone befindet. Ich habe auch kurze Besuche bei anderen Bauernsiedlungen gemacht, die weiter oben in der däga-klimazone liegen, und habe mich dort in Gesprächen über Heiratsbräuche und Kinderheiratspraktiken informiert. Während meiner ethnologischen Feldforschung in den Siedlungen im Mecha Distrikt wurde die lokale Sprache, Amharisch, als Kommunikationssprache verwendet. Die Studie gibt einer Annäherung an "emische" Sichtweisen und "Detailaufnahmen" den Vorrang vor Generalisierungen. Daraus ergibt sich ein ethnologischer Feldforschungsansatz, der so wenig formalisiert wie möglich ist und sich auf ausgewählte Familien und deren Netzwerke konzentriert. Studien über Frühheirat und Schulbildung von Mädchen wurden bisher auf der Meso-Ebene behandelt und generalisiert, die auf quantitativen Basisdaten beruhten. Folglich wurden die Einflüsse der lokalen sozio-kulturellen Umgebung und der ökonomischen Strukturen auf Frühheirat und Schulbildung von Mädchen vernachlässigt. Während meiner Feldforschung habe ich durch Beobachtung und Teilnahme den Alltag dokumentieren können und konnte an vielen sozialen, religiösen Ereignissen teilnehmen, insbesondere an Hochzeitsfesten. In einer Netzwerkstudie habe ich die Motive, die Eltern dazu bewegen, ihre Kinder, vor allem die Töchter, früh zu verheiraten, genauer untersucht, die ihrerseits den Schulbesuch verhindern, erschweren oder zum Abbruch bringen. In diesem Zusammenhang habe ich den großen Einfluß der Familie, der nahen Verwandschaft und der Dorfgemeinschaft auf die Frühverheiratung erkannt. Der lokale soziokulturelle Druck und die ökonomischen Strukturen in ihrer Auswirkung auf die "Gender"-Sozialisation und die Schulbildung bilden den Kern dieser Studie. Aus dieser Perspektive habe ich den sozialen und ökonomischen Druck beider Geschlechter, Mädchen/Jungen, und Frauen/Männer, untersucht. Im Untersuchungsgebiet wird der Jungfräulichkeit vor der Ehe hoher soziokultureller Wert beigemessen und ein Mädchen über 14 Jahre alt gilt als qomo qär (unverheiratbar, d.h. eheuntauglich). Dieser Umstand wird als Peinlichkeit und Blamage von den Eltern und vom Mädchen selbst empfunden. Das Mädchen wird als ökonomische Last für die Eltern angesehen und ihre häuslichen Aufgaben, wie die ihrer Mutter, werden als unproduktiv gewertet - obwohl ihr Beitrag, allein in Arbeitszeit bemessen, aber auch in ihrer Diversifizierung ökonomischer Aktivitäten, einschließlich der Landwirtschaft, höher ist als der der Männer. Auf der Basis eingehender Interviews mit Familien und mit frühverheirateten Schülerinnen im Untersuchungsgebiet hat diese Studie zu Tage gefördert, daß der Trend des Alters bei der ersten Heirat von 10 auf 7 und von 12 auf 9 Jahre gefallen ist. Mit anderen Worten, die Mehrheit der Mütter hat zwischen 10 und 12 geheiratet, wogegen die Mehrheit der Mädchen heute im Alter zwichen 7 und 9 heiratet. Genauer, das Durchschnittsalter bei der Erstheirat für die Generation der Mütter ist 11 Jahre, hingegen für die Generation der Töchter ist es auf 8 gesunken. Obwohl in der Literatur allgemein bekannt ist, daß Frühheirat in den bäuerlichen Gesellschaften in der Amhara Region Äthiopiens vorkommt, wurde in dieser Studie festgestellt, daß der Trend, entgegen meinen Erwartungen, im Untersuchungsgebiet wächst. Der Grund dieses Trends muß weiter untersucht und analysiert werden. Auf der Basis der vorläufigen Ergebnisse dieser Studie habe ich einen zwietätigen Erkundungsworkshop "Early Marriage and Girls' Education in Mecha Woreda" (Sept. 18 -19, 2004) in Merawi, Verwaltungssitz des Woreda, durchgeführt. Dieser Workshop bot die Gelegenheit, das ethnographische Material, das ich gesammelt habe, zu diskutieren und die tieferen Gründe für die Frühverheiratung herauszuarbeiten. Naturgemäß gibt es vielfältige interaktive und komplexe sozio-kulturelle Strukturen und Druck für die Bewahrung, Akzeptanz und sogar zunehmende Praxis der Frühverheiratung im Untersuchungsgebiet. Die kritischen Faktoren für die Zunahme der Frühverheiratung sind Armut, Landknappheit, daher Fragmentierung des Familienbesitzes, und Lebensunsicherheiten. Die Hauptursachen, warum Eltern ihre Kinder, vor allem die Töchter, früh verheiraten, können folgendermaßen zusammengefasst werden: 1) Ökonomisch gut situierte Bauernfamilien können mit anderen gut situierten Familien nur durch die Heirat ökonomische Allianzen bilden; 2) 18-Jahre alte Söhne aus ärmlichen Bauernfamilien können Land von der lokalen Bauernorganisation nur dann beanspruchen, wenn sie verheiratet sind, wobei nach dem Alter der Braut bzw. Ehefrau nicht gefragt wird; 3) Aufgrund der zunehmenden Armut neigen die Eltern dazu, alle ihre Kinder zeitgleich zu verheiraten, um die hohen Kosten im Zusammenhang mit den Hochzeitsfeierlichkeiten zu verringern; 4) Hauptanliegen von Bauernfamilien ist es, aufgrund der Lebensunsicherheiten, die Zukunftssicherung durch Heiratsallianzen zu bewerkstelligen. Als Ergebnis wünschen sich die Eltern, ihre Kinder verheiratet zu sehen, bevor sie selbst alt werden und sterben. Die Töchter "heiraten aus" aufgrund der patrilokalen Residenz nach der Eheschließung, was aus Sicht der Eltern "verlorene" Investition, z. B. für die Schulbildung, bedeutet. Die "einheiratenden" Mädchen, ihrerseits, kommen mit Pflichten, aber nicht mit Rechten. An dieser Stelle ist erwähnenswert, daß die soziokulturellen Motive der Frühheirat geschlechtsspezifisch sind. Im Vergleich zu den Jungen werden die Mädchen früher verheiratet, um das Alt-Jungfern-Stigma zu vermeiden und um sie vor vorehelichem Geschlechtsverkehr zu schützen - was bei Jungen weniger restriktiv gehandhabt wird. Obwohl ökonomische Motive und Lebenunsicherheiten treibende Kräfte für die Frühverheirat beider Geschlechter sind, tragen auch die sozioluturellen Wertvorstellungen, die man der "Fraulichkeit" und "Jungfräulichkeit" beimißt, zur hohen Rate der Frühverheiratung bei Mädchen bei. Daher besteht ein Bedarf, das kindliche Leben und das Leben von Mädchen unter der Herrschaft der Männer zu untersuchen, und wie diese den Zugang zu formaler Erziehung und deren Erfolg, insbesondere der Töchter, behindert. Die Möglicheiten, mit denen Mädchen und Frauen sich behelfen, die sozialen Erwartungen und die realen Herausforderungen des Lebens in Einklang zu bringen, sind in den Fallstudien dargestellt. In der Tat ist die Spanne der möglichen Verhaltensweisen viel größer, als die akzeptierten sozialen Normen sie ahnen lassen. Die Kluft zwischen dem idealen Verhaltensmuster und dem tatsächlichen Auslebensspielraum ist offenkundig. Diese Arbeit will einen Beitrag leisten zu einer Aufklärung über die schädlichen Folgen der Kinderheirat am Beispiel der Mädchen, deren Entwicklung im allgemeinen sowohl bildungsmäßig, gesundheitlich und sozial behindert wird. Es werden auch Vorschläge für weitere Forschung und für Gegenmaßnahmen unterbreitet. ; This study examines issues pertaining to early marriage and its effects on girls' education in rural Ethiopia, with special reference to Mecha Woreda in West Gojjam, Amhara Region, where early marriage is most common and girls' participation in formal education is very low by national as well as regional standards. The study employed primary and secondary methods of data collection. The primary data collection took seven months (between April 2003 and January 2004) in two phases of fieldwork. The first month was devoted to conduct preliminary household surveys, based on which baseline information was gathered and focus families were selected. The remaining months were devoted to conduct personal in-depth interviews with focus families and key informants, participant observation, extended case studies and focus group discussions coupled with video-tape recording and photographing. In short, in the field, most of the data were collected through the "classical" combination of ethnographic methods. I conducted the ethnographic fieldwork research among Bachema and Rim peasant communities of Mecha Woreda (District). Bachema, 5 km away from the woreda's capital, is situated in the lowland (qolla) ecological zone, whereas Rim, about 40 km away from the woreda's capital, is situated in the midland (wäyna däga) ecological zone. I also made shorter visits to other peasant communities in the highland (däga) ecological zone and conducted informal discussions there about marriage customs and early marriage practices. In conducting the ethnographic fieldwork among the rural communities of Mecha Woreda, the local language (Amharic) was used as a means of communication. The study lays emphasis on in-depth and detailed aspects of the issue at hand rather than on generalization. From this emerged an ethnographic fieldwork approach as little formalized as possible, with special attention paid on focus families and extended case studies. Studies on early marriage as well as girls' education in Ethiopia have focused on meso-level generalizations based on base-line surveys and quantitative methods. As a result, the local socio-cultural and economic structures surrounding early marriage and girls' education have been neglected. In everyday observation and participation over the period of the ethnographic study, I documented the daily life as well as numerous social, religious and especially wedding ceremonies. In a network study, I observed and investigated factors motivating parents to arrange early marriages for their children, particularly for daughters; and to send or not to send them to the locally available formal school. Through this method, I detected the impact of family or kinship networks as well as of social-village networks on parents' decision to arrange an early marriage for their daughters, or sending them to the local formal school. The local socio-cultural pressures and economic structures underlying gender socialization and formal schooling among the ethnographic research settings are the core of this research. From this perspective, I examined the social as well as economic dimensions of both, "boy-men's" and "girl-women's" lives. In the studied agrarian communities, the social and cultural pressures on girls to marry at an early age are very strong. A high social and cultural value is attached to virginity until marriage for girls, and an unmarried girl above the age of 14 is locally labeled as qomo qär (unmarriageable), which is an embarrassment or a disgrace to her family as well as to herself. She is also considered an economic burden to her family since her involvement in domestic tasks at home, like her mother's, is valued as unproductive, though her contribution in terms of time invested in diversified economic, including agricultural, activities is higher than males'. Based on personal in-depth interviews with focus families and with early-married female pupils in the ethnographic research sites, the study reveal that the trend of the age at first marriage is getting down from 10 to 7 years and from 12 to 9 years. In other words, the majority of mothers were married between the ages of 10 to 12, whereas the majority of the daughters are now married between the ages of 7 to 9. More specifically, the average age at first marriage for the mothers' generation is 11, whereas it is 8 years for the daughters' generation. Though it is commonly acknowledged in the literature that early marriage is most common among the rural communities of the Amhara Region of Ethiopia, this study reveal the trend, contrary to my expectation, that the prevalence rate of early marriage is increasing among the ethnographic research settings. The underlying reason behind this trend remains to be further investigated and analyzed. On the basis of the preliminary findings, I have organized a two-day exploratory workshop on "Early Marriage and Girls' Education in Mecha Woreda" (September 18-19, 2004) at Merawi, the woreda's capital. The workshop has proved to be a good opportunity to discuss the ethnographic material which I had collected so far and to identify the root-causes of early marriage and reasons for not sending girls to the locally available formal schools. The workshop has proved to be a good opportunity to identify locally appropriate strategies for challenging the negative aspects of early marriage and then to promote girls' formal schooling in the study area. Of course, there are various interactive and complex economic and socio-cultural structures and pressures accounted for the endurance, acceptance, and even the increasing trend of the practice of early marriage among the studied peasant communities. The most critical factors contributing to the highest prevalence rates of early marriage among the ethnographic research settings are family poverty, shortage of land due to fragmentation of family farm plots, and life insecurities. The major factors forcing parents to arrange early marriage for their children, particularly for daughters, can be summarized as follows: (1) Economically well-to-do peasant families can forge economic alliances with the relatively well-to-do families only through their children's marriage; (2) Sons who attain the age of 18 from land-poor families can claim land from the local Peasants' Association only if they got married, without taking into account the age of their brides. On the other hand, land-rich families with adult sons arrange a marriage for them just to maintain their landholdings. In both cases, the brides are usually below the age of 11; (3) Due to the aggravating family poverty, peasant parents tend to arrange the marriage for all of their children at the same time, in order to avoid the problem of preparing wedding feasts for each of them; (4) Securing children's future through marriage alliance is the major concern of peasant families due to life insecurities. As a result, the parents desire to see their children married or settled before becoming old or passing away. The daughters "marry out" because of patrilocality after marriage, so that their parents consider "investments" in them as a lost. Here it is worth mentioning that the socio-cultural motives behind early marriage are gender-specific. As a result, compared to boys, most girls get married at an earlier age just to avoid the qomo qär-stigma (fear of girls being unmarriageable after the age of 14) and to protect them from pre-marital sex, which is not equally scorned for boys. In this context, though economic motives and life insecurities are the major driving forces of early marriage for both sexes, socio-cultural values related to "femininity" and "virginity" have also contributed to the comparatively higher prevalence rate of early marriage among girls. Hence, there is a need for examining the pre-marital life of girls in the light of the overall control of women's life through men, on the one hand, and how this affects girls' access to and success in formal education, on the other. The ways in which girls and women manage to balance social expectations and real life challenges are demonstrated and analyzed in the extended case studies. My observations reveal that, in reality, the range of possible behavior is far wider than the superficially accepted social norms would suggest. In this context, the gap between the ideal patterns of behavior and the real ones becomes obvious. Furthermore, the gap between the national laws/policies legislating against early marriage/promoting girls' education and that of the local practices and realities is thoroughly examined in the light of the local peoples' reasons for arranging early marriage for their daughters, instead of sending them to the locally available formal school. The study reveals that parents' decisions on arranging early marriage for their daughters are usually based on gender differential expectations and values. In the first place, parents have the fear that their daughters will be unsuccessful in the formal schooling as compared to their sons. For most parents, the only successful vocation for the "girl-child" is to be a wife and mother. This motivates parents to give their daughters in marriage at an early age so that they can achieve social recognition in their community. As a result, parents prefer to invest on educating their sons rather than their daughters. In general, economic and social structures, life insecurities and the gender ideology are the main causes of early marriage, particularly for girls. The study examines the harmful consequences of early marriage on girls' overall-development in general and their participation in formal schooling in particular and concludes by suggesting possible areas for further research and future intervention.
Ob Fernsehschränke, Telefonzellen oder Computergehäuse – Umhüllungen und Verkleidungen medialer Technologien waren lange Zeit keine Gegenstände einer kulturwissenschaftlich ausgerichteten, medientheoretischen Auseinandersetzung, obwohl gerade das insistente Fragen nach Möglichkeitsbedingungen, nach Rahmung, nach Materialität oder nach medialer Verfasstheit ein Erkennungsmerkmal medienkulturwissenschaftlichen Problembewusstseins darstellen will. Der Sammelband Gehäuse: Mediale Einkapselungen bietet eine ambitionierte und komplexe Theoriebildung zur vernachlässigten Handlungsmacht von Gehäusen an, indem das Gehäuse erstmalig großangelegt als medienwissenschaftliches Epistem befragt wird. Darüber hinaus eröffnen die Texte viele Einblicke in die Mediengeschichte der Hüllen, Behausungen und Bauformen von Apparaten und Technologien, aber auch von historischen Vorläufermedien, von Materialitäten wie Holz und Müll oder von Kulturtechniken der Speicherung und Übertragung. Als die Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Medienwissenschaft 2018 stattfand, fielen vielen Tagungsteilnehmer_innen die zahlreichen, kunstvoll bemalten Verteilerstromkästen des Gastgeberorts Siegen auf. Durch die Gestaltung der Kästen beabsichtigte die Stadt sich als kreativer Industrie- 'und' Kulturstandort zu positionieren – und sorgte auf Fußwegen zwischen den Veranstaltungsräumen der Tagung für Gespräche über Stadt-Ästhetik, Energiewirtschaft, Geschmack etc. Wenn eine ansonsten unsichtbare Materialität erst durch Verfremdungspraktiken überhaupt sichtbar und dann mit Energiewirtschaft oder Ingenieurswesen assoziiert wird, handelt es sich höchstwahrscheinlich um ein Medium, weil Medien Wirklichkeiten organisieren und kanalisieren und dabei einen Hang zur Unsichtbarmachung ihrer Körper und ihrer Agency haben. Es war das Medium 'Gehäuse', also der Kasten (und nicht der Kabelsalat oder der Strom), der im Stadtraum sichtbar wurde und sich selbst thematisierte: als neues Trägermedium für Kunst. Jene zuvor anästhetische, eigene Medialität von Gehäusen ist es, die Hans Blumenberg "Umkleidung des künstlichen Produkts mit Selbstverständlichkeit" (S.9) nannte, und die für die Herausgeber_innen des Sammelbands die Grundthese darstellt, dass Gehäuse "Orte der Vermittlung sind, die vordergründig der Stabilisierung eines Funktionsarrangements dienen, an denen sich aber auch Zeichenprozesse abspielen." (S.10) Dass eine Medientheorie der Gehäuse eine lohnende, komplexe epistemische Herausforderung darstellen könnte, wurde dabei bisher durch hartnäckige Abwertungen vernebelt: Einerseits imaginieren kulturelle Gemeinplätze Gehäusefiguren als äußerliche Nur-Hüllen/Nur-Fassaden/nicht-essenzielle Oberflächen bzw. als Blendwerke/Täuschungen und andererseits formulieren auch wissenschaftliche Kommentare zu medialen Hüllen solche meist lediglich als Verstärkerinnen des 'Eigentlichen', also als sekundäre, repräsentationslogische Thematisierungen des Gehäuseinneren, der Software (oder des guten alten Inhalts) 'in' der äußerlichen Aufbereitung (Form). Dem halten die Herausgeber_innen eine Theoretisierung des Gehäuses entgegen, die es nicht nur als eine 'Schicht' des Mediums denkt, sondern die das Gehäuse selbst als 'medial' begreift – also als performativ, als wirkmächtig und in intermaterieller Wechselwirkung mit Umwelt, Nutzer_in, Innenleben etc. Dazu werden in der Einleitung vier Kontextualisierungen des Begriffs entwickelt. Konzipiert als "materielle Artefakte" (S.11), können Gehäuse erstens mit theoretischen Anleihen aus den Material Culture Studies und der ANT perspektiviert werden, womit auch die Beziehung der Funktionalität von Gehäusen zu Fragen der (Inter‑)Materialität oder zu Praktiken des Alltags adressiert ist, sodass das Gehäuse "als ein Ort (mit eigener Medialität) beschrieben werden kann, an dem ein gestaltetes Artefakt mit Praktiken konfrontiert ist und an dem sich damit auch soziokulturelle Konflikte abspielen"(S.13). In einem zweiten Schritt werden dann Perspektiven aus Theorie und Praxis von 'Design' bemüht, da Produktdesign intrinsisch mit der Geschichte der Industrialisierung (etwa mit der technischen Reproduzierbarkeit des Kunstwerks) verschränkt ist und so die Ambivalenz von 'Funktionalität und Ästhetik' in den Fokus rückt. Unter den Blickpunkten des Designs betrachtet – geplanter Gebrauch vs. "übergreifende ästhetische Leitvorstellungen"– offenbaren sich Gehäuse als verhandlungsintensive Medien, mittels derer zeitgenössische "Kommunikation über gesellschaftlich geteilte Werte, Normen und Einstellungen" (S.18) stattfindet. Ein Gehäuse weist drittens sowohl die Charakteristika der 'Infrastruktur' als auch des 'Interface' auf. Als Interface erscheint es, weil es ein instrumentelles Bedienelement ist, das sich Nutzer_innen als Schnittstelle zuwendet. Es tritt aber zugleich als Infrastruktur in Erscheinung – bzw. macht sich als solche unsichtbar –, indem es eine Stabilisierung von Komponenten darstellt, welche das Funktionieren eines Systems garantieren und dessen Verhältnis zur Umwelt determinieren soll. Mit dieser Einsicht lassen sich Gehäuse gerade in ihrer "wechselnde[n] Positionierung […] als bedienbares Werkzeug oder als Teil der Architektur" (S. 21) eines ökologischen Dispositivs untersuchen. Die vierte Kontextualisierung bündelt die vorangehenden am Beispiel der Theoriegeschichte der Blackbox und überträgt diese auf die Frage nach einer medienkulturwissenschaftlichen Theorie der Gehäuse. Die "Logik des Blackboxing" besteht in der Einkapselung technischer Komponenten und deren Abschirmung von Anwender_innen, womit sie "materieller Ausdruck von Formalisierungs- und Technisierungsprozessen" (S.11) sind und eine je spezifische Ordnung von 'Intransparenz zugunsten von Transparenz' festlegen, indem ihr Weniger an Einsicht den Pragmatismus ihrer Handhabe optimiert. Auf Basis dieser Annahme lässt sich die Erschließung einer Theorie des Gehäuses an die epistemologischen Erkenntnisse der Kybernetik anknüpfen: Davon kann abgeleitet werden, dass Gehäuse ein allgemeines "Modell von Kognition"markieren, das darin besteht, dass sie praktisches Wissen hervorbringen und organisieren (Beobachten, Erkennen, Sehen, Erfassen, Lernen). So soll argumentiert werden, dass sich Gehäuse nicht in ihrem instrumentellen Charakter erschöpfen. Sie sind dann nicht Repräsentationen von ihnen ausgelagertem Wissen, von Werten oder Normen, sondern Interaktionsparter_innen im prozessualen Auf-Einander-Abstimmen und damit "Verfahren der Wissensproduktion" (S.22). Wie schon die Einleitung, richtet sich das Gros der Beiträge an medienphilosophische Leser_innen-Interessen. Die meisten Texte verhandeln, bezogen auf einen material- oder ideengeschichtlichen Diskurs oder auf historische/aktuelle Phänomene, immer auch die Fragen: Wie definiert sich eigentlich ein/das Gehäuse und welches grundlegende medientheoretische Wissen lässt sich darauf anwenden oder davon ableiten? Und was bedeutet das für unseren Medienbegriff? So offeriert der Sammelband etwa eine Theorie der Gehäuse von Notfalldingen als emergente "suspense-Techniken"(Martin Stiegler, S.302), eine Diskussion von Körperkapseln, die binäre Subjekt-Objekt-Ontologien auflösen (Andreas Broeckmann) oder auch eine medienphilosophische Untersuchung der Beeinflussung des etablierten Umweltbegriffs durch Uexkülls mediale Umweltkonzeption "als gläsernes Gehäuse", "stabil und fest dem Lebewesen zugehörig" sowie "unauffällig und transparent" (Julian Jochmaring, S.262). Auch die Frage danach, wie sich kultureller Wandel in Gehäusen zeitigt, begegnet widerkehrend: in der Analyse sowohl von solchen Imitationen einer kühlen Smart-Phone-Elektrogerätästhetik in zeitgenössischer Architektur (Tom Steinert), als auch (umgekehrt) von jenen Nachahmungen wärmend hölzerner Musikmöbel-Optik durch aktuelle Retro-Smart-Phone-Gehäuse (Leonie Häsler). Herausstechend sind jene Passagen, in denen die Gehäuse-Theoriebildung mit politischen, gesellschaftskritischen oder explizit gender-relevanten Fragen verschränkt wurde, und in welchen die Medialität von Gehäusen so hinsichtlich ihrer Verstrickung in Machtverhältnisse dargestellt wird. Auf Gender-Diskurse von medialen Gehäusen macht etwa Tobias Landers Inklusion einer Besprechung von Valie Exports Tapp- und Tastkinoin der Genealogie künstlerisch reflexiver Gehäuse-Mysterien aufmerksam. Heike Weber wiederum kommt in ihrer Analyse "[z]ur Vermittlung von Konsumtechniken" mitunter auf Ellen van Oosts einschlägige Gender-Skript-Studie zum elektrischen Rasierapparat der 1950er-Jahre zu sprechen und erweitert Oosts Schlüsse zur Vergeschlechtlichung von Medien durch das Beispiel von Radioportables der Zeit.Außerdem beobachtet Weber, dass die Interfaces von Waschvollautomaten um 1990 ein effeminierendes Script vorgaben, das ihren Anwenderinnen mitunter durch 'Bio-Programme' die soziale Rolle einer Koordinationsverantwortlichen für Hygiene-, Material- und Umwelt-Bewusstsein nahelegte. Zusammenhänge von sozialer Differenz mit ihren korrespondierenden Gehäusen betreffen nicht zuletzt klassifizierte Praxen. Anhand von "Behausungen des Mülls"zeigt etwa Laura Moisi auf, wie Müll "Dingen und Personen einen Platz in der symbolischen Ordnung des Sozialen zuweist und die Welt in Zonen der Zugehörigkeit und Nicht-Zugehörigkeit aufteilt"(S. 214). Die Administration von Normativität durch Gehäuse ist auch Thema von Markus Krajewskis Kritik an der deutschen Architektur der Nachkriegszeit. Mosaik-, Raster- und Kachel-Strukturen im Stil karierter Collegeblocks dienen dazu – so die These – die Gegenwart zu dehistorisieren, "Gewissen reinzuwaschen" (S. 170) und "Bewohner in unbeschriebene Blätter zu wandeln", gleichsam "formatiert" (S. 171) und geschichtsvergessen. Derartige machtkritische Ausrichtungen der Forschungsbeiträge werden teilweise vermisst, wenn der ein oder andere Text sich etwa als genuin medienphilosophisch oder medienhistorisch versteht, und wenn dann das spezifische Selbstverständnis der Analyse- oder Theoretisierungspraxis impliziert, dass die untersuchte Medialität von Design, Infrastruktur oder Architektur ein Forschungsgegenstand ist, der unabhängig von dessen Gender-, Race-, Class- oder Ability-Dimensionen besprochen werden könnte. Eine Theorie von Gehäusen kann es nach meinem Dafürhalten nur unter den Prämissen geben, dass Gehäuse essentielle Agent_innen in Gefügen der Organisation von Accessibilities (Queer/Crip Theory) sind und dass sie eine Vergeschlechtlichung von Innerlichkeit/Äußerlichkeit durchwirkt – eine Perspektive, zu der Lektüren von Bourdieus Theorie des Hauses als gegendert-normalisierende 'verkehrte Welt' oder Sara Ahmeds feministischer Bezugnahme auf das Survival-Kit inspirieren könnten.[1] In viele Gehäuse von elektronischen Medien ist außerdem ein wichtiger Reminder für die Medientheorie buchstäblich 'eingeschrieben': "Made in China", "Made in Bangladesh" etc. verweisen auf materiale Implikationen von race/gender/class, die mit dem Outsourcing unserer Medienproduktion in Länder des Globalen Südens und mit der Ausbeutung von Women of Colour in der Medienindustrie einhergehen – ein entscheidendes und permanent anwesend/abwesendes Charakteristikum von Medialität im 21. Jh., das, wie Lisa Nakamura anregt, das kritische Verständnis von Medientheorie herausfordern sollte.[2] Ansätze einer solchen machtverhältniskritischen Haltung von Medienwissenschaftler_innen finden sich in Heike Webers Fazit zu Fragen des Blackboxings: "Was in einer Gesellschaft von einer jeweiligen Technik als wichtig zu wissen erachtet und was von dieser Technik erwartet wird, wird auch über Gehäuse- und Interfacedesign vermittelt, derweil andere Aspekte des Technischen ausgeschwärzt sind – und damit […] auch weiter im Machtraum der Technikproduzenten verbleiben" (S. 134). Denn bei aller vermeintlich öffnenden Ökologisierung von Medien als deren Emergenz in Smart Homes, Ubiquitous Computing oder Ambient Intelligence, darf nicht die Konjunktur zunehmender Schließung und Abgrenzung von Gehäusen übersehen werden. Auf diesen Prozess wird auch im Sammelband verwiesen: auf Vorgänge der "Isolierung", die beabsichtigen, "nur noch die notwendigen Ströme durchzulassen und unbefugte Zugriffe zu verhindern" (Florian Sprenger, S. 194). Till A. Heilmanns Text bietet dazu ebenso eine problembewusste Beobachtung an: Eine zunehmende Immunisierung des 'Machtraums der Technikpoduzent_innen' gegenüber Subversionen mittels gezielter Verunmöglichung von individuellen Eingriffen in Systeme "zwingt Nutzerinnen und Nutzern das Muster eines rein konsumierenden Umgangs mit und Gebrauchs von Computertechnik auf" (S.50). Vor diesem Hintergrund erscheint auch die Telefonzelle auf dem Cover des Sammelbands als Überhang aus einer anderen Epoche, wenn wir daran denken, dass in den letzten Jahren immer mehr europäische Stadtadministrationen ihre öffentlichen Telefonzellen so umgebaut haben, dass sie nicht mehr von Obdachlosen als Schlafplatz oder Kälteschutz angeeignet werden können. Arbeit und Magie werden in der ländlichen Gesellschaft der Frühen Neuzeit neu bewertet. Während die Reformation die Arbeit aufwertet, verteufelt sie den Müßiggang. Als zentrale Lebensäußerung bei der man häufig mit dem Lebensbereich des Anderen in Berührung kommt, birgt Arbeit ein hohes Konfliktpotential in sich. Als Glaubensform basiert Magie auf kollektiven Übereinkünften und strebt einen praktikablen Umgang mit feindseligen Mächten an, so dass sie mit Formen alltäglicher Konfliktaustragung (Gegenzauber, Bezichtigung als Zauberer/Zauberin) bekämpft werden können. Auf Magie als Deutung oder Handlung haben ihre beginnende Kriminalisierung (Carolina) und das Vordringen der Schriftlichkeit nachhaltigen Einfluss. Aus diesen Veränderungen heraus empfängt das Themenpaar Arbeit und Magie seine Bedeutung, das hier in seinem Zusammenwirken erstmals untersucht wird und zwar am Beispiel der Mittelmark. Wie die Auswertung von Gesuchen mittelmärkischer Gerichte um Rechtsbelehrung an den Schöppenstuhl in Brandenburg zum neuen Delikt der Zauberei im Zeitraum von 1551 bis 1620 beweist, handelt es sich bei der Mittelmark um ein verfolgungsarmes Territorium, das sich daher bestens für die Untersuchung des selbstverständlichen Umgangs mit Magie eignet. In 98 von 136 Prozessen sind insgesamt 107 Frauen und 9 Männer angeklagt – darunter eine "weise Frau" und zwei Männer als volksmagische Spezialisten. Der Höhepunkt der Spruchtätigkeit liegt zwischen 1571 und 1580. In dieser Phase tauchen erstmals dämonischer Vorstellungen auf und werden weibliche Magiedelikte auch auf Männer übertragen (Schadenszauber, Teufelspakt). Der Vorwurf des Teufelspaktes ist überwiegend im Nordwesten der Mittelmark anzutreffen und wird hier auch zuerst erhoben. Dennoch kann sich der dämonische Hexenglauben als städtisches Phänomen in der ländlich geprägten Mittelmark kaum durchsetzen, denn in keinem der untersuchten Fälle taucht der Terminus "Hexe" auf. Die Rezeption der Hexenlehre in all ihren wesentlichen Elementen (Buhlschaft, Zusammenkunft auf dem Blocksberg und die Fahrt dorthin) ist erst 1613 abgeschlossen. Damit kommt sie für die Mittelmark zu spät, um ihre zerstörerische Wirkung zu entfalten: Die Auswirkungen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges überlagern alsbald die Vorstellungen von "bösen Zauberinnen". Mit Hilfe der Studien von RAINER WALZ zur magischen Kommunikation und EVA LABOUVIE (Offizialisierungsstrategien) wurden drei Fälle näher untersucht, in denen die Arbeit entweder Konfliktanlass ist, mit magischen Mitteln beeinflusst wird oder es um die professionelle Ausübung von Magie im Bezug auf ländliche Arbeit geht. In Nassenheide wird 1573 dem Bauern Peter Calys das Abzaubern von Feldfrüchten unterstellt. Seine Nachbarschaft beobachtet ein ihr unbekanntes Ritual (vermutlich eine Schädlingsbekämpfung), was sie in kein geduldetes magisches Handeln einordnen kann. In Liebenwalde geht es 1614 um "fliegende Worte", die im Streit um erschlagene Gänse ausgesprochen und später, nach einer Reihe von Unglücksfällen, vom Gescholtenen als Flüche umgedeutet werden. In Rathenow steht 1608 der Volksmagier Hermann Mencke vor Gericht. Sein Repertoire an magischen Hilfsleistungen umfasst Bann-, Heil- und Hilfszauber. Diese drei Fallstudien ergaben für das Thema Arbeit und Magie, dass Magie in der sich schwerfällig entwickelnden Landwirtschaft ein innovatives Potential zukommt. Das Experimentieren mit Magieformen bleibt jedoch Spezialisten der Volksmagie vorbehalten. Insbesondere in den Dörfern, wo die Grenzen zwischen männlicher und weiblicher Magie durchlässig sind, erweist sich die Geschlechtsspezifik der volkstümlichen Magie als Produkt der Lebens- und Arbeitsbeziehungen in der ländlichen Gesellschaft. Männer wie Frauen verfügen über die zu ihren Arbeitsbereichen passenden Hilfszauber. Dass Zauber zu Frauenarbeiten wie Milchverarbeitung und Bierbrauen überwiegen, liegt neben der Häufigkeit, mit der diese Verrichtungen anfallen, ihrer Anfälligkeit für Fehler und ihrer Bedeutung für die Ernährung daran, dass sie sich im Verborgenen abspielen und daher verdächtig sind. Außerdem handelt es sich um mühselige und monotone Tätigkeiten, die daher der Motivation durch Magie bedürfen. Die Schlichtheit der weiblichen Magie korrespondiert mit der geringeren Spezialisierung weiblicher Arbeit in der Landwirtschaft, die sich in der Verwendung einfacher Werkzeuge bekundet. Wörter können wegen der spezifischen Organisation der Hirnareale zur Sprachverarbeitung in einer auf Mündlichkeit beruhenden Kultur heilen oder eine lebensbedrohliche Waffe sein. Indem Magie das Profane dramatisiert, kommt ihr die Funktion einer Erinnerungskunst zu, die später durch die Schrift ausgefüllt wird. Die Schrift macht Magie als Mnemotechnik überflüssig und immunisiert gegen die Macht des Wortes. Damit reift auch die Skepsis an der Wirksamkeit von Magie. Schließlich werden Schadenszaubervorwürfe nur noch als Injurienklagen verhandelt. Sie bestimmen die Prozesse um Zauberei nach dem Großen Krieg. ; Work and magic have been redefined by the rural society of the early modern period. The reformation revalorized labor and condemned idleness. As basic means of existence, which was highly interwoven with the living spheres of other people, labor contained a high potential of conflict. Magic was a set of beliefs based on collective agreements and aspired to deal with evil powers by fighting them with every day strategies of solving conflicts like counter spells or accusations of sorcery. As an interpretation or action, magic was greatly influenced by its definition as an act of crime and an increase in literacy. These changes inspired the subject of this paper, which will analyze for the first time the interplay of work and magic in the electorate of Brandenburg, more precisely the Mittelmark. The examination of legal proceedings between 1551 an 1620 proves that the Mittelmark has been less infected by witch craze, which makes it an appropriate area to investigate the everyday use of magic. In 98 of 136 proceedings 107 women and 9 men have been accused of sorcery, among them one midwife and two specialists of popular magic. The climax of the proceedings happened in the 1570s. Now, demonic imaginations occurred and former female acts of magic were attributed to men as well. The assumption of a pact between witches and devil was typical for the northwestern part of the Mittelmark and has also been brought up as a charge there for the first time. Witch craze, however, was a phenomenon of the cities and hardly infiltrated the rural Mittelmark. In none of the investigated proceedings the word "witch" has been used. The reception of witchcraft in all its details like the pact with the devil or the gathering and the flight to the Witches' Sabbath was only completed in 1613, too late to develop its destructiveness: The effects of the Thirty Years' War overshadowed the conceptions of evil witches. By using the studies of Rainer Walz and Eva Labouvie, I closely examined three legal proceedings, in which the cause of conflict was either work, influences of magic on work, or in which someone worked as a popular sorcerer within rural work life. In 1573, the peasant Peter Calys, living in Nassenheide, has been accused to spirit away the crops. His neighborhood observed an unknown ritual which did not appear to be any form of harmless magic. 1614 "flying words" have been spoken in Liebenwalde during a quarrel about slain geese and were reinterpreted later as curses. In Rathenow the popular sorcerer Hermann Mencke had to defend himself in a trial in 1608. His magic enabled him to banish, to cure diseases, or to repair misfortune. As one healing attempt failed, his whole practice was viewed in a different light by his clients. The investigation of these three cases showed that magic possessed an innovative potential in the otherwise only slowly developing agriculture. But only specialists of popular magic were allowed to experiment with magic. The gender specificity of magic proved rather to be a result of relations and working conditions in rural society than of abstract ideas. Both men and women were well grounded in suitable spells for their working sphere. The greater quantity of spells belonging to typical female tasks like dairy or brewery work can be explained not only by importance and frequency of such duties in peasant housekeeping. These error-prone procedures could also fail easily and were additionally executed in the seclusion of a chamber and therefore suspicious. Above all, the tasks were monotonous and exhausting and therefore needed a magical motivation. The more artless female magic, relying mostly on power of words, corresponded with the less specialized female labor in agriculture. Due to the different organization of the cerebral areas for speech processing in an oral society, words could be lethal or healing. By dramatizing the profane, magic fulfilled functions of a mnemotechnique which were substituted later by writing. Writing protected against the power of words and accelerated skepticism of magic. In the end, accusations of sorcery were taken as defamations, which dominated legal proceedings after the Thirty Years' War.
The ever increasing emission of carbon dioxide due to rapid industrialization, urbanization, unplanned tourism and alteration of land use pattern is causing unprecedented changes to marine biodiversity. Irrespective of political philosophy, nation, caste, sex and religion, mankind is under the appalling shadow of climate change. Today nature-based approaches for the mitigation of climate change are increasingly accepted as part of the low-cost solution. Thrust has been given by several scientific communities to assess the magnitude and viability of carbon sequestering potential of plants. Coastal producer communities like mangroves, salt marsh grass, seagrass beds, and seaweeds absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide during the process of photosynthesis. This carbon known as the 'blue carbon' is thus associated with the marine and estuarine ecosystems. However, a number of gaps in our scientific knowledge on blue carbon domain still exist. Molluscs, coral reefs, phytoplankton, which are amongst the important storehouses of carbon, have not been addressed. Very few scientific studies on the carbon stored in these valuable natural vaults have been performed, and no data bank is available on their carbon sequestering capacity on global basis. The methodologies for assessing blue carbon stock also need further standardization so that credit from blue carbon reservoir is accepted by the International bodies in the form of a concrete policy. It is a matter of great appreciation that Conservation International (CI), the International Union for Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN), and the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO is collaborating with governments, research institutions, non-governmental and international organizations, and communities around the world to develop management approaches, financial incentives and policy mechanisms for ensuring conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems and implement projects around the world that demonstrate the feasibility of blue carbon accounting, management, and incentive agreements. The present book has critically presented the data bank for each community of blue carbon not merely in the form of text description, but also through case studies that are the outcomes of research projects and pilot programmes. Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Associate Professor and former Head, Dept. of Marine Science, University of Calcutta (INDIA) has been active in the sphere of Oceanography since 1985. He obtained his Ph. D as NET qualified scholar in 1994. Since then he joined Calcutta Port Trust and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature-India), in various capacities to carry out research programmes on environmental science, biodiversity conservation, climate change and carbon sequestration. Presently Dr. Mitra is serving as the advisor of Oceanography Division of Techno India University, Kolkata. He has to his credit about 274 scientific publications in various National and International journals, and 26 books of postgraduate standards. Dr. Mitra is presently the member of several committees like PACON International, IUCN, SIOS, Mangrove Society of India etc. and has successfully completed about 16 projects on biodiversity loss in fishery sector, coastal pollution, aquaculture, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration. Dr. Mitra also visited as faculty member and invited speaker in several Universities of Singapore, Kenya, Oman and USA. In 2008 Dr. Mitra was invited as visiting fellow at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, USA to deliver a series of lecture on Climate Change. Dr. Mitra also successfully guided 22 Ph.D students. Presently his research areas include environmental science, mangrove ecology, sustainable aquaculture, alternative livelihood, climate change and carbon sequestration. Dr. Sufia Zaman, presently serving as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Oceanography in Techno India University (Kolkata) started her career in the field of Marine Science since 2001. She worked in the rigorous region of Indian Sundarbans and has wide range of experience in exploring the floral and faunal diversity of Sundarbans. She has published 1 book on carbon sequestration, 45 scientific papers and contributed chapters in several books on biodiversity, environmental science, aquaculture and livelihood development. Dr. Zaman is presently a member of Fisheries Society of India. She is also running projects on carbon sequestration by mangroves of Indian Sundarbans. She is the recipient of DST Women Scientist and Jawaharlal Memorial Doctoral fellowship awards. Her areas of research include aquaculture, fish nutrition, phytoplankton diversity, climate change and mangrove ecology. Dr. Zaman is also the first researcher in the maritime state of West Bengal (India), who initiated trial experiments on iron fertilization and subsequent enhancement of primary (phytoplankton) and secondary (fish) productions in the brackish water ponds of Indian Sundarbans with the financial assistance of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

In the context of an ageing population, a potential decline of family caregivers and the resulting potential care deficit, elderly care has remained an almost invisible subject for public policy and research in Chile. The Chilean government has begun to pay attention to the issue of elderly care, but it is currently moving too slowly. This thesis unveils the voices of the carers who dedicate their lives to providing care to an elderly relative. It studies care from a micro perspective by exploring the daily lives of caregivers and the intensity of their care experience. This thesis also studies care from a macro perspective, describing and analysing how elderly care is distributed in Chile and the government's role in this responsibility. The study identifies the major steps taken, as well as the challenges that lie ahead with a stronger governmental role and a fairer distribution of elderly care. To study care from a macro perspective, the thesis uses a mixed methods approach. It relies on large-scale surveys, on a literature review and interviews with key informants. To study care from a micro perspective this thesis adopts an in-depth qualitative methodology. The thesis finds that the Chilean social distribution of elderly care, despite all policy efforts to support elderly care, remains drawn towards a "familialism by default" care regime. This means that the social responsibility for elderly care is taken up almost exclusively by families, and by women therein, with important implications for gender and social inequality. The study also finds that caring for an elderly parent is a complex experience. The intensity of the care experience is partly determined by the specific tasks caregivers carry out and the amount of time they spend on care, and it is largely shaped by their personal history, their relationships with the elderly and their other relatives, from how they perceive their caring role and their expectations of care. The intensity of the care experience is then the result of a combination of objective factors, different contexts and subjective perspectives adjudicated by the emotional dimension of the care. ; Dans le contexte de vieillissement de la population, un déclin potentiel du nombre des aidants familiaux et le déficit de care qui en résulte, la prise en charge des personnes âgées est restée un sujet presque invisible pour les politiques publiques et la recherche au Chili. Le gouvernement chilien a commencé à prêter attention au sujet, mais beaucoup reste à faire pour une bonne prise en charge. Cette thèse adopte le point de vue des aidant-e-s qui consacrent leur vie à aider un parent âgé en perte d'autonomie. Le care est abordée dans une perspective microsociologique en explorant la vie quotidienne et les dimensions qui façonnent l'intensité des expériences de ceux qui prennent en charge un parent âgé. Cette thèse aborde aussi le niveau des politiques du care, en décrivant et analysant comment le care aux personnes âgées est distribué au Chili et le rôle du gouvernement dans cette responsabilité. L'étude identifie les principales étapes de cette politique, ainsi que les défis à relever pour les gouvernements pour garantir une répartition plus équitable du care aux personnes âgées. Pour l'aspect macro, la thèse utilise des méthodes mixtes. Elle s'appuie sur l'analyse secondaire de données nationales disponibles, une revue de la littérature et des entretiens réalisés avec des informateurs clés. Pour étudier le care dans une perspective micro, cette thèse adopte une méthodologie qualitative en profondeur. La thèse souligne que la répartition sociale du care aux personnes âgées au Chili, en dépit des efforts déployés par le gouvernement pour le soutenir, continue de relever d'un régime de « familialisme par défaut ». Ceci signifie que la responsabilité est assumée presque exclusivement par les familles et par les femmes, avec des implications importantes pour les inégalités de genre et les inégalités sociales. La thèse explicite en quoi être aidant d'un proche âgé est une expérience complexe. L'intensité de cette expérience est en partie déterminée par les tâches spécifiques qu'ils accomplissent et le temps qu'ils consacrent aux care mais son intensité est aussi largement modulée par leur histoire personnelle, leurs relations avec les personnes âgées et leurs autres proches, par la façon dont ils perçoivent leur rôle d'aidants et leurs attentes en matière de care. L'intensité de l'expérience du care est alors le résultat d'une combinaison de facteurs objectifs, de contextes différents et de perspectives subjectives présidés par la dimension émotionnelle du care.
In most of the developed societies, in France too, we are now witnessing an increase of the social and economic disparities between regions, an occurrence and persistence of neighborhoods "in difficulty", concentrating the most vulnerable populations. "Spatial segregation" appears as a norm of urban organization and territory as an issue of social cohesion. Many economic and sociological studies have sought to explain the differentials observed between these populations, particularly in the labor market. Three main mechanisms explain the impact of the place of residence on the individuals' labor market achievement: the spatial mismatch, the social environment and the discrimination based on place of residence. In this doctoral dissertation we focus on this last mechanism through which the place of residence affects the individuals' labor market achievement. Across three studies covering three chapters, we highlight three important elements in the analysis of discrimination related to place of residence: the feeling of discrimination, wage discrimination and employment discrimination. These are illustrated by different methods: an analysis of subjective survey data, an analysis of objective survey data and, finally, an analysis of experimental data. The main results are as follows. We have shown that there are specific effects of place of residence on the feeling of discrimination among young people. We have shown that the place of residence has a direct influence on the probability of finding a job after the school as well as on the salary associated with the job. Using a decomposition of wage differentials we have shown that there is a potential discrimination related to the place of residence that affects especially young women. We found a major impact of the residential county on the individuals' chances of access to hiring. The same effect also exists, more weakly, at the level of the neighborhood reputation. An analysis of the order of answers to job candidates confirmed these results and revealed an even stronger discrimination. On the basis of these results, we propose policy recommendations related to different aspects of discrimination based on place of residence. ; Dans la plupart des sociétés développées, en France aussi, on assiste aujourd'hui à une augmentation des disparités sociales et économiques entre les territoires, à l'apparition et à la persistance de quartiers « en difficulté », concentrant les populations les plus fragiles. La « ségrégation spatiale » apparait comme une norme d'organisation urbaine et le territoire comme un enjeu de cohésion sociale. De nombreuses études issues de l'économie et de la sociologie ont cherché à expliquer les écarts de situations observés, notamment sur le marché du travail, entre ces populations. Trois mécanismes principaux expliquent l'impact du lieu d'habitation sur la réussite sur le marché du travail des individus : le spatial mismatch, l'environnement social et la discrimination en raison du lieu de résidence. Dans cette thèse de doctorat nous nous intéressons à ce dernier mécanisme à travers lequel le lieu de résidence affecte les performances sur le marché du travail des individus. Au travers de trois études couvrant trois chapitres, nous mettrons en évidence trois éléments importants dans l'analyse de la discrimination liée au lieu de résidence : le sentiment de discrimination, la discrimination salariale et la discrimination à l'embauche. Ceux-ci sont illustrés par des méthodologies différentes : une analyse de données d'enquêtes subjectives, une analyse de données d'enquêtes objectives et enfin une analyse de données expérimentales. Les résultats principaux sont les suivants. Nous avons montré qu'il y a des effets spécifiques du lieu de résidence sur le ressenti de discriminations des jeunes. Nous avons montré que le lieu de résidence a une influence directe sur la probabilité de trouver un emploi à la sortie des études ainsi que sur le salaire associé à cet emploi. A l'aide d'une décomposition des écarts salariaux nous avons montré qu'il existe une probable discrimination relative au lieu de résidence qui affecte notamment les jeunes femmes. Nous avons trouvé un effet déterminant du département de résidence sur les chances d'accès à l'embauche des individus. Le même effet existe aussi, de manière plus faible, au niveau de la réputation du quartier de résidence des candidats. Une analyse de l'ordre des réponses faites aux candidats a confirmé ces résultats et a même révélé une discrimination encore plus forte. A partir de ces résultats, nous proposons des recommandations de politiques publiques liées aux différents aspects de la discrimination liée au lieu de résidence.

OBJECTIVES: To identify genetic determinants of susceptibility to clinical vertebral fractures, which is an important complication of osteoporosis. METHODS: Here we conduct a genome-wide association study in 1553 postmenopausal women with clinical vertebral fractures and 4340 controls, with a two-stage replication involving 1028 cases and 3762 controls. Potentially causal variants were identified using expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) data from transiliac bone biopsies and bioinformatic studies. RESULTS: A locus tagged by rs10190845 was identified on chromosome 2q13, which was significantly associated with clinical vertebral fracture (P=1.04×10-9) with a large effect size (OR 1.74, 95% CI 1.06 to 2.6). Bioinformatic analysis of this locus identified several potentially functional SNPs that are associated with expression of the positional candidate genes TTL (tubulin tyrosine ligase) and SLC20A1 (solute carrier family 20 member 1). Three other suggestive loci were identified on chromosomes 1p31, 11q12 and 15q11. All these loci were novel and had not previously been associated with bone mineral density or clinical fractures. CONCLUSION: We have identified a novel genetic variant that is associated with clinical vertebral fractures by mechanisms that are independent of BMD.
