Leadership for social justice is an issue that has gained relevance for professionals in education in many contexts around the world and Costa Rica is no exception. The objective of this study is the analysis around this theme, as well as the contribution of ideas both for practicing educators as well as those in training and for those who direct national educational policies. The interview protocol of the International Study of Leadership Development Network (ISLDN) and the Convention of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA)in the 2008 were used to interview two school administrators in a public preschool and a private multi-grade school. The results suggest a style of democratic and transformational leadership centered on aspects of social justice such as recognition and development of others' capabilities. There were a number of similarities between the two cases related to four broad categories of social justice: economic, cultural, associative and developmental. ; El liderazgo para la justicia social es un tema que ha cobrado relevancia en los espacios de diálogo vinculados a temas educativos, en muchos contextos alrededor del mundo y Costa Rica no es la excepción. El objetivo de este estudio es el análisis en relación con esta temática, así como el aporte de ideas para los educadores en formación y en ejercicio; igualmente, para las personas que dirigen el rumbo en materia de políticas educativas del país. Desde un enfoque cualitativo, se implementa el protocolo de entrevista de la Red Internacional de Desarrollo de Liderazgo (ISLDN), que surge como parte de las reflexiones en la Convención de la University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA)en el 2008, el cual está conformado por cinco preguntas. Los sujetos de análisis son dos directivos escolares, concretamente del nivel de preescolar público y de una unidad pedagógica privada. Los resultados sugieren un estilo de liderazgo democrático con algunas características de transformacional, centrados en aspectos de la justicia social como reconocimiento y capacidades de las personas. Además, se hallan coincidencias, en ambos casos, con los aportes teóricos revisados basados en las cuatro categorías de justicia social: económica, cultural, asociativa y para el desarrollo.

ONKALO, the world's first repository for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel, is being constructed in Eurajoki, Finland. We study how the constructor of this facility portrays it to the local community in order to influence lay understanding of the disposal risk, build trust, and gain public approval for the construction project. The study is based on a framing analysis of the newsletters published by the constructor of the facility in 2000-2014. The results suggest that the nuclear industry has developed increasing understanding of the social and communal aspects of public resistance to nuclear power. To create trust and to increase acceptance locally the industry is socially constructing a nuclear community around the repository. The gap between the nuclear experts and the local residents is narrowed and the repository is portrayed as being a shared project within the local community advancing the common interests of the industry and the residents. This may represent a new trend in pronuclear storytelling.

The paper begins by outlining the approaches to the development of a philosophy of social science in the work of Bourdieu, Passeron, and Habermas. The discussion of the positions of Comte and Mill which follows is an historical case-study of the tensions between competing stances adopted in the 1960s — between the tendency to formulate a logic of the social sciences and the tendency to ground a philosophy of social science in ontology or in the socio-political conditions of its production. The method adopted to compare the contributions to the philosophy of social science made by Comte and Mill displays sympathy with Bourdieu's inclination to analyse the social conditions for the genesis of theory. The paper first considers comparatively the contexts in France and England for the emergence of social science and philosophy about social science. It then examines separately the developments of the projects of Comte and Mill before turning to an articulation of the contrasts between their positions, focusing on aspects of their correspondence as subsequently published and introduced by Lévy-Bruhl. The purpose of the paper is to raise the general question whether international intellectual exchange in relation to the analysis of society can occur within a universal discourse possessing a priori validity or through socio-cultural exchanges which assist the construction of universality through the mutual recognition of difference.

The 'High Treason Incident' rocked Japanese society between 1910 and 1911, when police discovered that a group of anarchists and socialists were plotting to assassinate the Emperor Meiji. Following a trial held in camera, twelve of the so-called conspirators were hanged, but while the executions officially brought an end to the incident, they were only the initial outcome as the state became increasingly-paranoid about national ideological cohesion. In response it deployed an array of new technologies of integration and surveillance, and the subsequent repression affected not only potential enemies but innocent citizens as well.

Abstract
In 2012 social scientists, philosophers and religious scientists celebrated the centennial of the publication of one of the most seminal books in the modern study of religion, Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse, by the then leading French sociologist Emile Durkheim's (1858–1917); in 2017, we commemorated that author's untimely death at age 59, broken by World War I in which he lost his only son and many of his beloved students. Educated, first as a Rabinnical student then as a modern philosopher, Durkheim earned his place among French thinkers primarily as a "founding father" of the social sciences. Having recently (on the basis of a life-long preoccupation) devoted a book-length study to Durkheim's religion theory, I intend in this essay to highlight major aspects of Durkheim as an exponent of French thought. I shall first briefly situate Durkheim in his time and age, with special emphasis on his political views and his ethnic identity as a secularised Jew. Then I turn to Durkheim's relation with the discipline in which he was originally trained, philosophy. I shall pay attention to the complex relationship between Durkheim and Kant and further highlight his dualism, epistemology, and views on primitive classification, as well as his puzzling realism, the place of emergence in his thought, and his moralist tendencies. I shall finally articulate Durkheim's transition to sociology and how he gave over the torch of emerging sociology to his main students, having thus created an adequate context in which to discuss Durkheim's final masterpiece (Les formes) and the still dominant theory of religion it expounds.

Sin olvidar su actuación bélica en las largas campañas del frente catalán en las Guerras de 1684 y en las de los Nueve Años, 1689-1697, dicha actuación, lejos de ser objeto de investigación, se convierte en un factor que nos permite historiar más objetivamente la mencionada vivencia de la guerra por aquellas tropas. Así, más que la/s anécdota/s militar/ es de turno, nos interesan aspectos como el número de tropas en campaña y las bajas habidas, su origen geográfico, su edad, la presencia de la enfermedad y la muerte. ; From a social view of the military history, the present article pretends to explain the participation and experiences of the Tercios recruited by the Granada's Kingdom in wars carried by the Hispanic Monarchy against the aggresive imperialism of Luis XIV. Without forgetting their warlike performance in the long campaign in the catalan front in 1684 and Nine Years was, 1689-1697, this performance, far from becoming an object of investigation, becomes a factor that allows us to explain more objectively their war experience. PurposeThis article aims to highlight the stigmatization attached to the unemployment of educated youth in rural regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachThe study explicates the subjective experiences of the youth as being unemployed and societal attitudes toward them through an in-depth qualitative approach. A total of 30 unemployed male individuals were interviewed through an interview guide.FindingsThe study reveals that unemployed individuals are stigmatized and discriminately treated. They experience the difference in social support from their family and friends during unemployment, which is a discouraging aspect. This finding is in contrast to the existing literature on the subject in which family and friends are described as a major source of social support. As the study is conducted in the rural context, it is observed that local factors coupled with the joint family system have intensified negative attitudes toward the unemployed youth. Subsequently, the negative societal treatment serves as a factor for psychological challenges in their lives.Originality/valueThis article serves the need of exploring the experiences of unemployed individuals precisely in the Pakistani context.

Von der Sprache über soziale Normen bis hin zu den Regeln eines einfachen Kartenspiels ist breite Übereinstimmung erforderlich, um den jeweiligen Zweck zu erfüllen. Auch die Meinungen zu den zentralen Themen unserer Zeit sollten so weit übereinstimmen, dass wichtige Herausforderungen gemeinsam in Angriff genommen werden können. Dies ist jedoch häufig nicht der Fall. Sowohl politische Meinungen als auch Einstellungen zu ethischen Fragen sind oft tief gespalten. Die Ursprünge einer solchen Meinungspolarisierung haben die Soziologie lange Zeit vor ein Rätsel gestellt, da soziale Einflüsse uns oft näher zusammenzubringen scheinen. Was müssen wir also annehmen, um Meinungsspaltungen zu erklären? Wann wird ein Konsens gebildet? Und welche Rolle könnte die gestiegene Kommunikation zwischen Menschen bei diesen Prozessen spielen? In dieser Arbeit werden wir uns solchen Fragen mit Hilfe mathematischer Modellierung und der Analyse sozialer Daten nähern. Im Speziellen soll dazu beigetragen werden, die Lücke zwischen mikroskopischen Annahmen über den sozialen Einfluss und der Bildung von makroskopischen Meinungszuständen in sozialen Netzwerken zu schließen. ; Consensus is key for many aspects of our daily lives. Concepts ranging from language, to social norms, to the rules of a simple card game require population-scale agreement to fulfil their function. People's opinions on major issues of our time should also be reasonably consistent such that important challenges can be tackled collectively. However, this is often not the case. Political opinions as well as the attitudes towards ethical issues are often deeply divided. The origins of such opinion polarization have puzzled sociology for a long time, as social influence often seems to bring us closer together. Hence, what do we have to assume in order to explain opinion cleavages? When will consensus be formed? And what might be the role of increased communication among people in these processes? In this thesis, we tackle such questions by means of mathematical modeling and the analysis of social data. More specifically, we aim to contribute to bridging the gap between microscopic assumptions about social influence and the formation of macroscopic opinion states in social networks.

Eritrean refugees are being trafficked and enslaved in Libya, where they are tortured to force relatives to pay a ransom for their release. Labelled with a digital code, they are moved along in the possession of the traffickers through a series of 'black holes', in which their access to digital technologies and connectivity is highly controlled. They are tortured, abused, extorted and subjected to sexual violence. Many die along the way. If they make it to the Mediterranean Sea, they risk being intercepted and returned to Libya or dying at sea. Over the period of this study (2017-21), it is conservatively estimated that at least 200,000 men, women and children have fallen victim to human trafficking for ransom in Libya, and the cumulative value of this trade for that period is estimated at over 1 billion USD. This detailed ethnographic study identifies the routes, modus operandi, organisation, and key actors involved in the human trafficking for ransom of refugees and migrants, who are desperately in need of protection. The book is part of the GAIC Research Network and African studies series published by Langaa RPCIG and makes an important contribution to the literature on human trafficking, migration studies, African studies, modern slavery, social protection and governance.
