[The protection of the victim in European Law: what will be the impact of Directive 2012/29 / EU?] Adopted by the European Parliament and the Council of Europe a decade after the 2001/220 / JHA Framework Decision, Directive 2012/29 / EU complements the European Statute as regards the victims of crime. The latters are granted a number of prerogatives intended to ensure that they take part in the legal proceedings in a conscious and mindful way and to avoid the risk of so-called secondary victimization. Italy has just adopted measures to implement the Directive, because the increased protection for crime victims concerns a constitutionally guaranteed principle.

Bringing together over forty established and emerging scholars, this landmark volume is the first to comprehensively examine the evolution and current practice of social movement studies in a specifically European context. While its first half offers comparative approaches to an array of significant issues and movements, its second half assembles focused national studies that include most major European states. Throughout, these contributions are guided by a shared set of historical and social-scientific questions with a particular emphasis on political sociology, thus offering a bold and uncommonly unified survey that will be essential for scholars and students of European social movements.

On November 4, 2014, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) held in Tarakhel v. Switzerland, in a 14 to 3 decision, that Swiss authorities would violate Article 3 (prohibition of torture/inhuman and degrading treatment) of the European Convention on Human Rights (European Convention) if the applicants were to be expelled to Italy, in application of the Dublin Regulation, without Switzerland having first obtained assurances from the Italian authorities that "the applicants would be taken charge of in a manner adapted to the age of the children and that the family would be kept together."

It is often argued that energy policy is too fragmented across EU Member States and should be Europeanized to pave the way towards an efficiently organized European power system, which rest on the internal market for energy and a pan-European super-grid. However, this view neglects i) the factual heterogeneity of European energy policies in terms of harmonization and centralization, ii) economic arguments in favor of decentralization and iii) legal as well as political-economic obstacles against centralization of decision making. In this vain, we point out that a plea for a stronger role of the EU needs to be made with care and differentiation.

In this paper we analyze the evolution of Higher Education in the last three decades and the effects of the recent Portuguese economic crisis, officially started at 2011 with the intervention of International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission. Based on the statistical data produced by national and international organizations we show that the process of "massification" of higher education in Portugal is late compared with other European countries – it only started in the middle eighties - and it did not question the elitist character of this educational level. We also argue that the present economic crisis may contribute to strengthen it elitist character.

Report on Archaeological research on St Kitts by the Faculty of Archeology of the University of Leiden, The Netherlands in 2014-2015. A multi-disciplinary team of researchers have carried out field work campaigns in St Kitts in 2014 and 2015, followed by a workshop in March 2015 to wrap up the field work activities in the island. This is a report of those activities. This reseach was carried out under direction of Prof.dr. C.L. Hofman as part of European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Program (FP7/2007-2013) NEXUS1492, ERC grant agreement no 319209 and Humanities in European Research Area (HERA), grant no 1133.

Biochar application to agricultural soils is an interesting emerging technology with promising potential for long-term carbon storage, sustainable waste disposal, and soil fertility enhancement. Extensive information exists in the literature on the highly beneficial properties of biochar. Nevertheless, systematic application of biochar on European agricultural soils may have wide ranging policy implications as well as environmental and public health concerns. In this paper we critically review existing scientific evidence from a European policy perspective and identify research gaps for future comprehensive assessments of the policy, environmental, economic, and health implications of the systematic use of biochar in European agricultural soils.

The present study examines the determinants of individual support for the European Union's (EU) Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Using data from the 2005 Eurobarometer survey, I specified models that test whether gender, subjective economic evaluations of the European integration, and attachment to Europe affect how EU citizens view the CFSP and a possible rapid European military force. My findings show that there is no gender gap in EU foreign policy attitudes: women are not less pacific than men. Individuals base their evaluations of the EU on their experience of the economic integration and their feelings for Europe.

This study examines young people's intentions to migrate abroad in Kyrgyzstan, focusing in particular on differences between Asian and European-origin ethnic groups. The multivariate analyses of recent survey data show that even after controlling for socioeconomic characteristics and social embeddedness Europeans are significantly more inclined to migrate than Asians. Whereas no gender differences in migration intentions among either group are detected, marriage, childbearing, and social capital exhibit distinct ethnic-specific effects. Although economic considerations are prevailing stimuli for migration in both groups, the results point to the formation of two dominant ethnic-specific migration preference types – for temporary migration among Asians and permanent migration among Europeans.

This study on safety and liability issues relating to package travel, package holidays and package tours highlights some of the gaps in the EU package travel law by answering a number of specific questions related to statistical evidence, Community legislation, and US legislation. It also suggests possible solutions to fill these gaps. The study was prepared by Civic Consulting and is based on a legal analysis, a literature review, an evaluation of statistical data, and on interviews with European and national travel and tour operator associations, individual tour operators, European and national associations of insurers, individual insurance companies, and European and national consumer organisations.

This Article examines the European Commission's Home State Taxation and CCCTB initiatives. It argues that both proposals undermine the long-term objective of attaining a consolidated European corporate tax regime. It suggests an alternative strategy, which offers a comprehensive formulary-tax-allocation-solution in one of the hard to tax sectors, such as the financial sector. This strategy requires more efforts and political risk-taking, but would better promote the long-term objective of a consolidated EU corporate tax regime.
