The significant role of science in the development of all spheres of society is undeniable, it ensures progress and improvement of the quality of life, promotes the introduction of innovative technologies in all areas of human activity. Today, the issue of popularization of scientific achievements is on the agenda, as well as the development of information channels that will allow the society better understand the importance of scientific discoveries and their impact on culture, identity, values and human behavior. The purpose of the article is to evaluate the level of readers' information awareness of the latest scientific achievements and the library role in it.The article examines the place of the library in the system of relations between scientists and the general public. It records that journals that regularly publish fresh and relevant materials are an effective means of popularizing science. The awareness of readers of public libraries about scientific achievements is analyzed and the demand for popular science journals available in the collections of the State Scientific Technological Library of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SPSTL SB RAS) is studied.The authors conclude that: 1) popular science journals for library users are not the main source of knowledge about the development of science and technology, but there is a steady demand for them, and there is also a tendency to expand the names of the requested journals, accompanied by a simultaneous increase in their issuance; 2) requests for popular science journals, with a few exceptions, do not depend on gender indicators; 3) people over the age of 60 constitute the bulk of readers of popular science periodicals; 4) more often, popular science journals from the SPSTL SB RAS collections are requested by specialists with higher education. It is noted that the level of education of library users becomes one of the main factors determining the demand for popular science journals. The list of journals from the SPSTL SB RAS collections, which are in the greatest demand, has been determined. Thus, the library, not being a direct scientific communicator, but having popular science journals in its collections, performs an important intermediary function in popularization of science.

In face with the rapid development of information technology, with the special agricultural policy of our country, this paper advocates an information-based exploration into the construction of new operational models in order to answer the question as to how agricultural popular science periodicals can cope with the ever-changing global market economy. This paper also attempts to investigate the problems we are bound to face. The paper aims at identifying the connection between the target domain and the source domain (represented by the PARTS OF MECHANISM, MECHANISM REPAIR, MECHANISM ACTIVATION). The author uses continuous sampling method, as well as methods of conceptual and component analysis, in order to elicit multiple target domains and the mapping principle. The sentences under research (512 metaphorical expressions) were taken from various British and American popular science journals on Biology. The author considers the key works written in the field of conceptual metaphor (G. Lakoff, E. Maccormac), linguistic picture of the world (D. Berdnikova, S. Dracheva), written by the Russian linguists. The theoretical analysis is finished by a review of the works in the sphere of the popular science and scientific discourses and the place of metaphor in them (O. Desyukevich, S. Chistyukhina, E. Mazyar, E. Mityukova). In the course of the material description the author has drawn some conclusions about the way the English conceptualize biological processes. It is important to note that most frequently the metaphorical meaning is a broader, more general one, whereas in other cases, it alternatively makes the object or a process more specific, or it can have a completely opposite meaning. Molecule, cell, bacteria, fungi and viruses serve as target domains, which can be explained by the immense significance of the processes that lay the "foundation" of human life. A very extensive metaphorical thesaurus of the mechanism conceptual domain is indicative of this conceptual domain being well-structured. It is worthy of note that the lexemes with the denotational meaning of stopping are barely present in the research which means that the described genes, molecules and cells are doing a never-ceasing job of maintaining life on earth.

The article is devoted to identifying the using features of the sciencetainment method in Russian popular science TV programs. Currently, the method is actively used on television to attract the attention of viewers and implement several functions of journalism at once – the enlightenment and recreational ones. The study presents the characteristics of sciencetainment as a method of television journalism, describes causes for such a content to be in demand, identifies signs of the presence of sciencetainment in popular science TV projects, defines the advantages and disadvantages of using that method.

Los tesauros son herramientas de organización del conocimiento necesarias para el control de la información. Muchos no se actualizan con la necesaria frecuencia, reduciendo considerablemente su utilidad. Este trabajo tiene como objetivos, analizar el grado de actualización de los tesauros de la Unesco y Unión Europea (Eurovoc); y determinar la capacidad de las noticias de divulgación científica de ser usadas para efectuar esa renovación. Para ello se han extraído palabras clave a partir de titulares de artículos de divulgación científica, publicados en prensa digital. A continuación, mediante técnicas de Recuperación de Información (N-gramas y Apache Solr) se buscaron equivalencias con los tesauros mencionados anteriormente. Los datos obtenidos permiten confirmar que ninguno de los macro-tesauros debe utilizarse para describir noticias de divulgación científica, ya que buena parte de las palabras clave extraídas no se recogían en estos. Sin embargo sí pueden emplearse como base para la construcción de otros vocabularios de organización del conocimiento. Por otro lado, una revisión más frecuente es necesaria y obligatoria. La inclusión de nuevos términos y la redefinición de las relaciones entre los ya existentes incrementarían incuestionablemente la calidad de las herramientas analizadas. Las noticias de divulgación resultan adecuadas para dicha actualización, constituyendo auténticos yacimientos de conceptos y términos. ; Abstract Thesauri are knowledge organization tools necessary to control information, but many of them are not up- dating with the frequency required, it reduces their usefulness. This paper aims to analyze the updating degree of UNESCO thesaurus and European Union thesaurus (EUROVOC) and determine if popular sci- ence news are useful for this renovation. In this work, keywords were extracted from headlines. After, using Information Retrieval techniques (N-grams and Apache Solr) they were searched in both thesauri to find equivalences. Data obtained let us confirm that none of these macro-thesauri should be used to de- scribe popular science news, although both of them can be used as a base for building other knowledge organization vocabularies. On the other hand, a more frequent review is necessary. Inclusion of new terms and redefinition of relationships between them is un- questionable to increase the quality of analyzed tools. Popular science news are adequate to this purpose, they constitute real sources of concepts and terms.
