This study explores how limited access to natural resources causes gender-based violence and what professional social work practice strategies can be employed to deal with it. Analysing 10 qualitative interviews with Gujjar women, it discusses how they have experienced violence while accessing firewood, water and grazing their cattle. It argues that along with gender, intersection of poverty, dependence on limited natural resources and socio-cultural norms and tribal identity further marginalise Gujjar women and their community in general. It proffers professional social work practice strategies to address gender-based violence. The analysis and suggested strategies are useful not only to Gujjar communities but also to other women and communities living in similar contexts.

Recent U.S. elections have witnessed the Democrats nominating both black and female presidential candidates, as well as a black and female vice president. The increasing diversity of the U.S. political elite heightens the importance of understanding the psychological factors influencing voter support for, or opposition to, candidates of different races and genders. In this study, we investigated the relative strength of the implicit biases for and against hypothetical presidential candidates that varied by gender and race, using an evaluative priming paradigm on a broadly representative sample of U.S. citizens (n = 1076). Our main research question is: Do measures of implicit racial and gender biases predict political attitudes and voting better than measures of explicit prejudice? We find that measures of implicit bias are less strongly associated with political attitudes and voting than are explicit measures of sexist attitudes and modern racism. Moreover, once demographic characteristics and explicit prejudice are controlled statistically, measures of implicit bias provide little incremental predictive validity. Overall, explicit prejudice has a far stronger association with political preferences than does implicit bias.

Brian Ott was a professor in the Department of Speech Communication at Colorado State University. ; Includes bibliographical references (pages 412-415). ; Through an analysis of the popular syndicated television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, this essay begins to theorize the relationship between collective visions of the future and the identity politics of the present. Focusing on the tension between the show's utopian rhetoric of the future and its representational practices with regard to race, gender, and sexuality, it is argued that The Next Generation invites audiences to participate in a shared sense of the future that constrains human agency and (re)produces the current cultural hegemony with regard to identity politics. The closing section calls for critics to continue politicizing mediated images that appeal to popular imagination and to develop and implement a pedagogical practice of counter-imagination.

Die Verfasserin analysiert lebensgeschichtliche Interviews mit jeweils sechs männlichen und weiblichen Überlebenden des Konzentrationslagers Mauthausen. Für die Auswahl der Lebensgeschichten ist die Zeichnung ambivalenter Geschlechterbilder ein Kriterium gewesen. Ein weiteres ist gewesen, ob die Interviewten zum Zeitpunkt der Verfolgung Kinder hatten (dies trifft für zwei Frauen zu). Es wird verdeutlicht, dass Geschlecht neben anderen Faktoren ein relevanter Faktor in der Art und Weise der Darstellung historischer Ereignisse ist. Die Frage nach Geschlechtlichkeit birgt jedoch auch die Gefahr in sich, dass die scheinbar strikte Dualität der Geschlechtskategorien reproduziert und gestärkt wird. Wenn man beispielsweise fragt, wie Frauen und Männer die nationalsozialistische Verfolgung erlebten, ist der Ausgangspunkt zum einen diese meist unhinterfragte Zweiteilung der Geschlechter und zum anderen gehen wir von der impliziten Annahme aus, dass eine eindeutige Zuordnung zu einem Geschlecht möglich ist. Man wird damit auch angenommen, dass das Geschlecht Teil ihrer Identität ist und dass es ein geschlechtsspezifisches Erleben gibt. Geschlecht als sozial relevante Kategorie nicht zu inkludieren würde sowohl einer Nichtberücksichtigung existierender Machtverhältnisse und Ungleichheiten als auch einem Verlust an Informationen mit der Konsequenz inadäquater Analysen gleichkommen. ResumenIniciamos este análisis identificando una serie de aristas políticas asociadas a las tecnologías de intervención corporal para el caso de personas trans. Ello constituye una invitación abierta a repensar, por un lado, el papel de los pacientes/ usuarixs/ consumidores y, por otro, los efectos sociales que se desprenden de la actualización de los sentidos y los propósitos con que fueron idealmente concebidos los artefactos. Sostenemos que la Ley de Identidad de Género en Argentina propició un proceso de politización de las demandas y las subjetividades de las personas trans. Al tiempo que habilitó una instancia de democratización de las tecnologías de intervención corporal, tanto en lo que respecta al acceso, como a la direccionalidad y los fines con que son utilizadas.AbstractWe begin this analysis by identifying a series of political edges associated with body intervention technologies in the case of transgender people. This constitutes an open invitation to rethink, on the one hand, the role of patients / users / consumers and, on the other hand, the social effects that arise from the updating of the senses and the purposes with which the artifacts were ideally conceived. We maintain that the Gender Identity Law in Argentina promoted a process of politicization of the demands and subjectivities of transgender people. At the same time, it enabled an instance of democratization of body intervention technologies, both in terms of access, as well as the directionality and the purposes for which they are used.

Introduction and Objectives. This article explores the interaction between voice and gender relations in the context of radio broadcasting education. The research speaks to the gender inequalities that are increasingly being questioned, especially by younger generations. Methodology. We have employed Critical Discourse Analysis in a corpus of twenty texts elaborated by the students of Radio National de España's Master's Degree. They were asked to write a reflection on their personal experiences with voice, drawing connections to their gender identities. Results and Conclusions. The results show a previous knowledge and acceptance of gender theories, their relationship with radio dogmas, and their resistance and creativity in the face of voice normalization.

Winner of the 2006 Race, Ethnicity, and Politics Organized Section Best First Book Award from the American Political Science Association Winner of the 2006 W.E.B. DuBois Book Award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists Ange-Marie Hancock argues that longstanding beliefs about poor African American mothers were the foundation for the contentious 1996 welfare reform debate that effectively "ended welfare as we know it." By examining the public identity of the so-called welfare queen and its role in hindering democratic deliberation, The Politics of Disgust shows how stereotypes and politically motivated misperceptions about race, class and gender were effectively used to instigate a politics of disgust. The ongoing role of the politics of disgust in welfare policy is revealed here by using content analyses of the news media, the 1996 congressional floor debates, historical evidence and interviews with welfare recipients themselves. Hancock's incisive analysis is both compelling and disturbing, suggesting the great limits of today's democracy in guaranteeing not just fair and equitable policy outcomes, but even a fair chance for marginalized citizens to participate in the process.

AbstractHow do media portrayals of potential policy beneficiaries' identities sway public support for these policies in a public health setting? Using a pre-registered vignette experiment, we show that the racial identity of substance users depicted in news media shapes public opinion on policies to address the opioid crisis. People display biases in favor of their own racial identity group that manifest in their support for both treatment-based policies and punitive policies. We show that these biases may be moderated by the type of initial drug used by a substance user and associated levels of perceived blame. Extending theories of group politics, we also assess favoritism based on gender and residential context identities, but find no such biases. These results highlight the continued centrality of race in the formation of policy preferences.

On the 50th anniversary of the ISSA and the IRSS, an influential Norwegian scholar in understanding sporting cultures, Mari Kristin Sisjord, considers the trajectory, challenges, and future opportunities for sociological inquiry about lifestyle sport and gender. It is noted that the emergence of lifestyle sport research was built on interpretive inquiry, the rise of the cooperative new leisure movement, and subculture research stimulated by cultural studies. Driven by diverse theoretical influences, including Bourdieu and Foucault, questions of power relations, voluntary risk-taking, commercialization, mediation, identity development, and community-building have been key topics. A central challenge has been to untangle the complexities of gender in the often high risk context of lifestyle sports perceived as masculine; here, understanding how women negotiate their identities presents important questions. In considering future research, Sisjord follows Thorpe's counsel in recognizing the need to put female participation and leadership in lifestyle sport into historical and cultural contexts as the exercise of power and organizational engagement are redefined.

This book examines and critiques the fact that Chile's claims to economic exceptionalism have been embodied, often quite aggressively, in a heterosexual, and primarily male, ideal. Despite the many shifts Chilean economics and politics have undergone over the past fifty years, the country's view of itself as a "model" in contrast to other Latin American countries has remained constant. By deploying an artistic, literary, and cinematic archive of queer figures from this period, this book draws parallels among the exceptionalisms of Chile's economic discourse, the subjects deemed most (and least) apt to embody it, and the maneuvers of its cultural production between local and global ideas of gender and politics to delineate its place in the world. Queering the "Chilean Way" thus sheds light on the sexual, economic, and aesthetic dimensions of exceptionalism-at its heart, a discourse of exclusion that often comprises a major element of nationalism-in Chile and throughout the Americas

Since Putin's rise to power in Russia there has been a rise of traditional values in Russia's contemporary identity. This became especially clear in the period following his reelection in 2012. These traditional values have manifested themselves in several ways, both nationally and internationally and affect the way Russia act in certain situations. Most notably is the treatment of Russian LGBT individuals, Russia's stance as anti-interventionist and a strong anti-Western sentiment. This thesis explores what the role of traditional values in Russia's contemporary identity is, and what the effects of these values are. It does this through a discourse analysis of three selected Putin speeches and a case study of 2014 Sochi Olympics and the protests and campaigns that surrounded it. It also includes a discussion on the role of masculinity in Russia and a discussion surrounding the Crimea conflict as part of Russia's contemporary identity formation. The discourse analysis of the speeches shows that traditional values play an important role in Russia's contemporary identity, that family is the cornerstone of contemporary Russia, and that children needs to be protected at all costs. The speeches also show a clear anti-Western sentiment that was rooted in the West's lack of moral due to their liberal policies, especially in regards to LGBT rights. The Sochi case study show that the outside perception of Russia as negative did not have a negative impact on the role of traditional values in Russia's contemporary identity but rather the opposite. The case showed that when Russia is met with opposition in regards to LGBT rights, it will only increase the focus on traditional values. The opposition gave Putin something to rally around, and a clear "enemy" to defeat. This showed that the way the protests around Sochi were constructed was not the proper way to improve the state of LGBT rights in Russia. This thesis argues that Russia's focus on traditional values is both political and ideological. The role of traditional values stem from a need to increase Putin's power and standing within Russia by implementing more traditional values and playing on masculinity, and at the same time showing the world that Russia is an alternative to the liberal West; Putin and Russia are looking for more international power and a way to regain their old power position. It is ideological because of the clear bond between the implementation of traditional values and the belief of the Russian Orthodox Church. ; M-IR
