Moral Powers, Fragile Beliefs suggests new ways of thinking about moral philosophy in its under-explored but potentially very fruitful encounter with philosophy of religion. The contributors undertake this project through a variety of novel approaches, via literature, psychoanalysis, history of philosophy, continental and feminist thought, as well as by means of analytic philosophy. The volume will include essays by both highly regarded academics who have already made significant contributions in the fields of moral and/or religious philosophy - and a select number of young, up-and-coming rese

In The Morality of Gay Rights, Ball presents a comprehensive exploration of the connection between gay rights and political philosophy. He discusses the writing of contemporary political and legal philosophers-including Rawls, Walzer, Nussbaum, Sandel, Rorty and Dworkin-to evaluate how their theoretical frameworks fit the specific gay rights controversies, such as same-sex marriage and parenting by lesbians and gay men, that are part of our nation's political and legal debates

Although Oakeshott's philosophy has received considerable attention, the vision which underlies it has been almost completely ignored. This vision, which is rooted in the intellectual debates of his epoch, cements his ideas into a coherent whole and provides a compelling defence of modernity. The main feature of Oakeshott's vision of modernity is seen here as radical plurality resulting from 'fragmentation' of experience and society. On the level of experience, modernity denies the existenc

Leo Strauss's article "An Epilogue" is made up of many different critical arguments about political science. The guiding principles of these arguments are not revealed clearly enough. One can even get the impression that "An Epilogue" is an unfinished article. Only after finding the guiding principles we can understand the Strauss's critique. He emphasized the difference between the philosophical and scientific approach to politics. "An Epilogue" shows that he understood political science as philosophy.
The aim of this work is to respond to the following question: how did Charles S. Peirce find unity for his pragmatist philosophy through the formulation of Scholastic Realism? The author proposes the said doctrine to be a reading guide, leading us through the different stages of Peirce's work as a philosopher. By understanding his realist doctrine, we can see why he believed it was a viable theory for understanding the problem of Universals. This book demonstrates why, in Peirce's mind, such a problem has pervaded the history of philosophy. The author's line of argument reveals that Scholastic Realism is crucial to the understanding of his philosophy, which is a new approach in Peirce scholarship. It provides a useful framework for asking questions about reality in the same way that Peirce himself did. As a result, the author shows that Peirce's realism addresses different yet related philosophical problems, leading Peirce to brand the final version of his philosophy as "Scientific Metaphysics". The conclusion offers an interpretation of the Scholastic Realism principle as a solution to Peirce's concerns -- a useful idea to achieve a better theory of reality in his struggle to realize metaphysics a posteriori. Peirce's doctrine is presented alongside some of its uses, especially in the fields of abstraction theory, and also in the fundamental principles of mathematics. This work should advance our comprehension of the problems related to Peirce's philosophy as well as shedding light on pragmatism and its origins as well as the battle between realism and nominalism
The paper discusses the phenomenon of the so-called serious games, i.e. computer applications presented on major platforms of the App Store and Google Play and specializing in philosophical content. The relevance of this topic is dictated, on the one hand, by the undeniable fact that the development of technology has undoubtedly affected the educational process; as a result, a lot of educational games and programs were published, which, in modern realities, cannot be ignored due to the fact that they are firmly rooted in the Internet community, especially among schoolchildren and students. On the other hand, we are faced with a problem due to the question of the necessity and expediency of using such programs among students, because, as is known, the wider range is the more difficult to choose the most suitable option. In addition, there is competition between the classical sources of information (such as books, educational films) and serious games industry, where it is quite difficult, weighing their advantages and disadvantages, to determine the priority. The study is an attempt to analyze the integration of modern serious games in a philosophical environment with subsequent use for educational and research purposes. The authors attempt to answer the question that emerged from the bowels of the enlightenment, the reception of which, on the eve the fourth industrial revolution, will probably sound like this: «Do digital technologies contribute to the general "wisdom" of mankind?». Turning to such a narrow phenomenon as «serious games», the authors demonstrate a socio-philosophical perspective that confronts society and education in the form of the «Philosophy for Everyone» dilemma. The ultimate goal of this study is to build a socio-philosophical reflection on the role of «serious games» in modern realities. It is concluded that the «utilitarian value» of «smart technologies» is essential and useful for education, but another thing is also noted: the beneficial effect will be the opposite if the technology monopolizes the entire education market. Methodology used in the study is based on the principles and methods of socio-philosophical analysis, projected mainly on the role of technical evolution of communications in the translation and philosophical knowledge acquisition.

George Santayana (1863-1952) appears emotionally distant and personally uncommitted in many of his writings. In what may have been a related phenomenon, he does not seem to have committed to any school of philosophy, but rather to draw from many of the available schools when it suited him. In this article, we assess his constantly changing use of different philosophies and its implications for both philosophy and politics.
This paper holds a reflection on teaching Philosophy for audiences not specialized in it. It starts from the experience itself and autobiographical data from his author, taking into account a critical thinking perspective and an observation of several topics related to the philosophical pedagogy drew from the practice with different kinds of groups and students in classrooms. It also makes an historical survey of some of the possibilities of Philosophy as a service to mankind in different aspects, especially in reference to the search for the meaning of life, the meditation about indifference towards the material world, and its possibilities in business, firms and political world, being the latter a proposal to re-think the options of Philosophy in Latin-America in the future.
The story of African philosophy is surrounded by controversy. Decades after the "great debate" over its mere existence, many fundamental questions are left unanswered. Political societies frequently regard philosophers as potential threats to morality and religion and even subject these thinkers to the gravest inquisitions and indictments. Socrates was executed for disbelieving in the gods of Athens, Jean-Jacques Rousseau was charged with capital crimes for his anti-Christian teachings, Galileo Galilei was found "vehemently suspect" of heresy, compelled to recant, and sentenced to incarceration for life. The contributors to Political Philosophy Cross-Examined aspire to reopen the case for the philosophic way of life while fully appreciating the harsh attacks advanced by its most fervent detractors. In an age where extremist movements, existentialism, and postmodernist thought challenge the authority of reason, the book is a seminal contribution to current literature on philosophy, politics, history, classics, and religion alike. Political Philosophy Cross-Examined is a festchrift in honor of Professor Heinrich Meier of the Siemens Foundation, the University of Chicago, and the University of Munich
