This special issue explores underrepresented aspects of the political dimensions of global warming. It includes post- and decolonial perspectives on climate-related migration and conflict, intersectional approaches, and climate change politics as a new tool of governance. Its aim is to shed light on the social phenomena associated with anthropogenic climate change. The different contributions aim to uncover its multidimensional and far-reaching political effects, including climate-induced migration movements and climate-related conflicts in different parts of the world. In doing so, the authors critically engage with securitising discourses and resulting anti-migration arguments and policies in the Global North. In this way, they identify and give a voice to alternative and hitherto underrepresented research and policy perspectives. Overall, the special issue aims to contribute to a critical and holistic approach to human mobility and conflict in the context of political and environmental crisis.

To explore the propagation of undesirable policies in a form of populist extremism, we construct a social learning model featuring agency problems. Politicians in different countries sequentially implement a policy. Voters learn the incumbent politician's type and the desirable policy by observing foreign policies on top of the domestic policy. We show that populist extremism is contagious across countries through the dynamic interaction between the changing public opinion and implemented policies. This structure yields interesting long-run dynamics. First, a single moderate policy could be always enough to stop the domino effect. Second, the persistence of the domino effect depends on the correlation of the desirable policy across countries. In particular, while extremism eventually ends under the perfect correlation, it may become impossible to escape from extremism under the imperfect correlation. These results reveal a new negative aspect of decentralized policymaking.

This paper presents new findings regarding the public response to public spending cuts as part of the UK Government fiscal consolidation programme, specifically to the perceived effects of reduced library opening hours on the public library user in a city in the North of England. An inductive approach was taken to the mixed methods study, using a self-completion, cross-sectional survey distributed to adults visiting one of three libraries in the city during a 6-day period. Qualitative and quantitative data analyses indicate a shared level of dissatisfaction with the service reductions across the respondents, and a shared perception of having been adversely affected. Statistical analyses revealed a strong level of agreement that the changes had a significantly negative impact on different aspects of respondents' lives. The research evidences the direct effects of service reductions on library users, as well as the wider social and economic implications.

This article highlights the potential for increased and more standardised monitoring of a range of aspects of the safety of journalists. This is in the light of a specific indicator that has been agreed by the UN as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The indicator concerned treats the safety of journalists as a benchmark for tracking progress on SDG target 16.10, which specifies "public access to information and fundamental freedoms" (UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, n.d.) as a development aspiration. Inclusion of this indicator in the SDGs provides a universally legitimated framework with strong catalytic potential. All this holds a promise of improved, more comparative, and increased research output, as compared to the previous situation. The results of new research stimulated by this development, particularly at country level, could have real impact on the safety of journalists.

The role of Confucian traditions in strengthening the contemporary political regime of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea In Asian countries authoritarian relationships have been noticeable for centuries not only on political but also on social grounds.The teachings of Confucius were important in this aspect. According to many au­thors, they still exert a significant influence in North Korea and have an impact on the durability of Kim Jong-un. However, there are also opinions that it is a big mistake to describe this country as Confucian. For this reason the aim of this article is to show the real meaning of this ideology in North Korea. This will be done by demonstrating similarities of the present situation to the principles of Confucianism, as well as denials of the guidelines of this ideology. As a result, this will allow the author to analyze how Confucian traditions can determine the future of the regime in Pyongyang.

In the article on the basis of the scientific literature study, the peculiarities of the formation of the educational environment in the modern elementary school are highlighted. The basic components (informational, social-psychological, cultural-educational and material-technical) as well as components of innovative educational environment of elementary school (spatial, informative, communicative) are substantiated. In the structure of the educational environment of the school, the author identifies the following functions: didactic-educational, information-developing, coordinative, adaptive-emotional, socio-cultural, communicative, integrative, which ensure the integrity and systemic functioning of the simulated environment of the elementary school. The basic aspects of psychological and pedagogical expertise of the developing educational environment are determined in the paper. The stages of activity of all the subjects of educational-educational interaction (students, teachers, parents) in the subject-content functioning of the developing educational environment of primary school are singled out

This article examines the political formula of Romanestan as conceived by Ionel Rotaru (1918–1982), a Romanian refugee in France after the Second World War. Romanestan is the most visible aspect of an ambitious plan demanding rights for those labelled Gypsies throughout the world. This study is of interest because it sheds new light on the problems of social and political readjustment after the Second World War from the standpoint of racial exclusion. Rotaru's project was both the response to longstanding historical racist aggression and also a crucial turning point in the formation of Romani ethnic identity. What makes its study interesting is that the formula of the Romanestan wove the right to exist of those regarded as Gypsies into a creative transnational political project. Based on classified documents, this article highlights the political nature of processes of ethnicization and assesses the performative power of symbols.

AbstractUsing Global Northern, non‐Jewish, female, highly skilled partners and spouses of Israeli Jewish citizens in Israel as a case study, and depicting their interactions with bureaucracy, integration into the labour market, gendered aspects of integration and clashes between self‐perception and ascription this paper teases out that, despite its specificity, the case of Israel allows forming conclusions about the precariousness of a class of presumed privileged migrants. The central finding is that Global Northerners experience a status deprivation, which includes deskilling and social marginalization. This nexus was experienced as limiting personal agency, which allows for questioning their presumed status of privileged migrants; it concurrently underscores the importance of the analytically difficult and diffuse nexus of personality and agency. The ethnographic data demonstrates that individuals coped with the challenges differently, suggesting that specific personalities and intra‐ and interpersonal resourcefulness underpin individual resilience thresholds.

This article explores the utility of sit-down interviews in researching people's embodied relationships with place. We offer a critical intervention in the ongoing debates concerning methodological 'innovation' by exploring under which circumstances sit-down interviews can produce dynamic and embodied knowledge. We propose that when conducted in situ in an environment well known by both research participants and researchers, and when focused on inherently sensory topics, sit-down interviews can provide rich insights into embodied experiences of place. In addition, we contribute to the literature that compares sit-down interviews and walk-alongs by exploring the aspects of embodied experience that sit-down interviews might be more adept at capturing. Since there is considerable overlap in the kinds of knowledge that different interview methods can produce, we argue that it is impossible to divide social reality into distinct domains of experience, each with its own matching method of enquiry.

This study delves into the relationship between income inequality and subjective well-being by gauging the role played by opportunities at the country level. Using data from the World Value Survey, we estimate multilevel models to explain cross-country differences in individuals' life satisfaction. Opportunity and inequality exert a significant effect per se on life satisfaction, and their joint effect explains the puzzling positive relationship between income inequality and life satisfaction in low- and middle-income countries. Income inequalities reduce the well-being of individuals if opportunities are low, but inequality is not relevant for life satisfaction if opportunities in the country are high. Among the aspects of opportunity that really matter, we show that inclusiveness and access to advanced education play a more major role than political freedom or personal rights. Results apply for different social, income, and education groups.

Through a discursive analysis of reports on human rights in Chile from different moments in recent history, we show how finding of cognitive linguistics can contribute to a better understanding of social phenomena. More concretely, we analyze three discursive aspects: (i) the graduality of the identification of victims and perpetrators, (ii) the degree of intentionality that is attributed to the actions and the (more or less) prototypical representations of the agent, and (iii) the description of spaces that actívate the notion of certain perpetrators. The results show that the OEA reports, written during the dictatorship, offer more detailed information about those responsible for human rights violations than the Rettig report, written at the beginning of the transition towards democracy. Moreover, this study shows how cognitive linguistics can contribute to the analysis of discourses concerning the (non-)attribution of responsibility.

Digitization has changed economic activity in many ways. While digitization has contributed to a very dynamic development of markets and competition, concerns are also being expressed about powerful positions of some companies. The digital transformation poses new challenges for companies, consumers, politics and society. Competition policy is also required to address these developments and to adapt existing competition law, if necessary. The following analysis of digital markets showed that it is not possible, in general, to make concrete competition policy statements or even to give detailed recommendations for the antitrust analysis. The aspects are to be considered separately and in detail when examining search engines, social networks, trading platforms and other business models. On the other hand, data (and data analysis) should stand in the centre of competition law analysis due to their importance for the economic success of digital market companies.

Objective: To analyze the factors related to the turnover of nursing professionals of a public teaching hospital. Method: Descriptive, exploratory, retrospective study with quantitative analysis conducted with workers from a public teaching hospital. The analysis used a data collection instrument from the service, applied at the time of the voluntary resignation of the professional. Results: 223 nursing professionals participated in the study. The factors that led to voluntary turnover were the employment bond, age and the association of both. The majority of professionals were young adults, in a high productivity phase, which increases willingness to seek challenges in the labor market and professional improvements. Conclusion: Turnover is multifactorial and influenced by economic, social and political aspects. Reducing inequalities in working conditions, which generate dissatisfaction, such as different employment bonds for professionals who have the same function and perform the same activities, is fundamental to reduce turnover.

Research on sustainability transitions has expanded rapidly in the last ten years, diversified in terms of topics and geographical applications, and deepened with respect to theories and methods. This article provides an extensive review and an updated research agenda for the field, classified into nine main themes: understanding transitions; power, agency and politics; governing transitions; civil society, culture and social movements; businesses and industries; transitions in practice and everyday life; geography of transitions; ethical aspects; and methodologies. The review shows that the scope of sustainability transitions research has broadened and connections to established disciplines have grown stronger. At the same time, we see that the grand challenges related to sustainability remain unsolved, calling for continued efforts and an acceleration of ongoing transitions. Transition studies can play a key role in this regard by creating new perspectives, approaches and understanding and helping to move society in the direction of sustainability.

Abstract: Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, renowned as the "Cradle of Naval Aviation", has been a fundamental pilot training facility for the U.S. Navy since its establishment in 1914. World War I ensured aviation would remain an important aspect of U.S. naval warfare and led to an increased influx of prospective aviation cadets at NAS Pensacola. Subsequent decades of training led to hundreds of training accidents and the loss of naval aircraft in the waters off Pensacola, Florida. Two F8F Bearcat wreck sites are discussed here, including the methods involved in aircraft investigation and the historical documents referenced for their identification.
