(ICE2)
"China has been holding its annual China International Import Expo (CIIE), starting from 2018 in Shanghai. This is a significant move for China to actively open the Chinese market to the rest of the world as this supports trade liberalization and economic globalization This book systematically expounds the background and content of CIIE, and studies the opportunities that China's expansion of imports brings to its economy, enterprises, consumers and to that of other countries. It elaborates on how the CIIE facilitates countries and regions from different parts of the world to strengthen their economic cooperation and trade, and promote global trade and world economic growth. The book helps readers understand China's reform and opening-up, as well as the the latest trends and policies of the country's expansion of import"--Publisher's website
The question of how effective political tools actually are is among the most hotly debated in contemporary IR theory. There is no unanimity how to even measure the effectiveness and impact different political measures produce. This book comprehensively introduces social science students and scholars to the various fields of effectiveness and impact research in the study of international relations.

Throughout the second half of the Twentieth Century, Australia was a fierce advocate and defender of the multilateral rules-based economic order. Since the early 2000s however, the Australian government has privileged the pursuit of preferential trade and investment agreements, and now sees the pursuit of preferential deals as central to the advancement of its broader foreign policy goals. In this chapter, I assess Australia's contribution to the rules-based international order in trade and finance from the end of WWII to the present. I also examine the relationship between Australia's trade and investment policy approach and its broader foreign policy objectives by asking: are the economic rules Australia is promoting likely to advance or undermine its stated foreign policy goals? My aim is to advance debate about the most desirable future direction of Australia's foreign economic policy agenda.

Every system that manages or assesses biodiversity rests on a simplification of its complexity. The simplification of biodiversity is debatable and difficult; even, for example, regarding the elements on which the assessment and management should focus. Nevertheless, within law, there are assessment and management schemes that are based on a simplified understanding of the meaning of [the construct of] 'biodiversity'. For example, the Ecosystem Approach, European Union (EU) Habitats Directive, and the EU Water Framework Directive try to assess the status of different biodiversity elements based on their different 'biodiversity' simplifications. As the conservation of biodiversity is a vital global question, it is important to include the right elements within the 'biodiversity' construct to achieve no net loss. Based on international and EU law, I conceptualize a consistent legal simplification of 'biodiversity'.

Energy subsidy reform is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and tackling climate change. This paper sets out the evidence on the scale of subsidies and their impact. It then reviews the actions of donors in encouraging and supporting energy subsidy reforms. I find that, outside of analytical work in support of international diplomatic efforts, the donor community has devoted remarkably few resources to supporting developing countries to remove energy subsidies. This is despite the fact that energy subsidies exceed all bilateral aid in 59 per cent of recipient countries. The reason for this low level of effort is the political sensitivity of such reforms. The paper then draws on the recent literature on 'thinking and working politically' to provide recommendations about how donors might more effectively encourage politically sensitive energy subsidy reform.

Competitions have been a visible and controversial part of the classical music world for over a century, yet sociologists have strangely neglected to study their social significance. This article explores the competition's ongoing contest for legitimacy by considering the case of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.Through a discourse analysis of publicity materials and media coverage, I reconstruct the symbolic frameworks that guide the construction of the event and the interpretation of competitors' performances. I also trace the critical challenge to the idealized representations of the event, and decode the gender ideologies implied in commonly used metaphors. Demonstrating the centrality of meaning in musical production and reception, I aim to expose the limitations of the production perspective and Bourdieu's model of the artistic field, offering in their place a new approach based on social performance.

Background and rationaleThe International Journal of Population Data Science (IJPDS) was launched in April 2017. It is an electronic, open-access, peer reviewed journal, publishing articles on all aspects of research, development and evaluation connected with about people and populations. It represents an internationally unique vehicle for publishing a broader range of articles than most journals in related fields by including in scope: working papers, methodological developments, informative reports, and other pieces of interest, in addition to more traditional manuscripts. As such, it provides a focal point (and a home) for all areas of Population Data Science. The creation of the IJPDS was inspired by the IPDLN, and places great importance on the viewpoints and activities of Network members to guide the development of the journal.
ObjectiveInformation dissemination – stakeholder consultation – informing future directionsThe main objective of this collaborative session is to present the audience with an up-to-date summary of journal strategy and progress to date, and to use this forum to gain further viewpoints to better target future directions of the journal to meet the needs of those working in Population Data Science.
PlanThe session will comprise 5 sections:
A short presentation overviewing the journal, its historical origins, its remit and relationship to the IPDLN and Network members. Primary objectives of the journal and performance metrics from the first 18 months of operation will be presented.
Gauging audience opinion on:
What they like/dislike about the journal
What is working well/not so well
Feedback and discussion on the survey results
Discussions with audience in groups, each focusing on some/all of the following questions, and a question of their own choice if something arises:
How can we make IJPDS articles more accessible to the general reader/non-specialist researcher?Example options: short video/audio; general reader summaries; infographics; other
How can we increase the reach of, and interest in, the journal?
Open answers
What would you suggest as a special issue? These topics for group discussion will be posed to the session audience with the aim of using the feedback in defining our priorities for the coming year.

The book represents a major examination regarding the current practice of international relations and world politics. It analyzes the international relations of large, medium, and smaller sized actors, and how they influence the larger dynamics and ebb and flow of the international system. While assessing the perspectives of 21st century international systems, it also examines how relations between actors may improve or worsen, surely the most timely issue presently facing global and relational politics. Through globalization, the concept of a more balanced version of the American Dream has extended worldwide. Irrespective of wealth or poverty, globalization's promise of prosperity has been adopted eagerly, despite uneven progress along the way. Together with the larger realities of Neo-Liberal thinking and influence, where global and cyber markets have evolved with little supervision, we have seen a move from enlightened self interest to the reality of pure self-interest. This book addresses the larger ethical implications of this global trend.
