Using the European Community Household Panel (1994-2001), random effects models are estimated to assess the effect of income inequality on individuals' health. The individual's health status is measured by self assessment responses and by relatively objective measures of health. Country-level inequality measures are used after controlling for regional fixed effects. This implies that country level factors are the relevant approximations of individuals' reference groups. The results suggest that income inequality harms not only the health of the least well off but also the health of all individuals regardless of their position in the income distribution.
Against the background of a strong polarization of relationships between religion and politics, Southern European territories also experiment a more discrete, but structuring, Catholic repertoire of mediation. The social action from below led by those Catholic collectives with social sensitivity is grounded on a pragmatic approach of social work and can lead to differentiated forms of publicization. This research aims at understanding the political work performed by Catholic organizations, as welfare providers and advocacy platforms, and to measure its political impact in terms of legitimization and delegitimization, within and outside the Church. Catholic mobilizations are considered here in their relation with sociopolitical issues such as the search for economic alternatives, the fight against poverty and social exclusion, support to immigrants, and peace-making. Therefore, the Catholic mediation expresses itself through four repertoires of action: the entrepreneurial repertoire, the repertoire of subsidiarity, the repertoire of hospitality and the repertoire of peace. On each of these repertoires, the Catholic Church incidentally demonstrates its internal pluralism. Empirical evidence comes from a comparative qualitative research conducted in Italian, Spanish and French regions. This HDR thesis was achieved thanks to the support of the European Commission under a Marie Curie fellowship for career development - FP7 People 2010 IEF, which allowed a two-years stay at the European University Institute in Florence (2012-2013).

The international relations of the `new Europe' are shaped by a process of international socialization in which the Western community transmits its constitutive liberal norms to Central and Eastern Europe. This process neither fits rationalist assumptions about international politics in a technical environment nor sociological theories of action. Rather, international socialization in the new Europe is best explained as a process of rational action in a normatively institutionalized international environment. Under these conditions, rational state behaviour is constrained by value-based norms of legitimate statehood and proper conduct. Selfish political actors conform to these norms in order to reap the benefits of international legitimacy, but as instrumental actors they also calculate whether these benefits are worth the costs of conformity and how they can be reaped efficiently. An empirical analysis of the behaviour of the Western socialization agencies and the CEE countries supports this perspective on international socialization.

The unrestricted movement of EU citizens from one country to another has been one of the fundamental principles of the Union. On the other hand, this issue has also attracted criticism, particularly from the radical right and so-called populist parties, or the supporters of these movements. Part of the population of Europe regards immigration and the unrestricted movement of people as a threat to the stability and prosperity of their own society. Through these critical perspectives, permanent immigration is viewed as a larger problem, as its effects on the host countries are more permanent than in the case of temporary residence. Through the same perspectives, the short-term but uncontrolled stay of foreigners is often linked to crime. This study concentrates on what kind of image a significant part of the Finnish media has given of a recent case of the foreigners that have attracted large attention in the country.
