Our understanding of past societies is shaped by the media that constitute their cultural practices. The essays in this volume examine the specific forms by which Ancient Greek and Roman civilizations presented themselves in literature and inscriptions, sculpture and monuments, habitats and rituals. They explore the question of how the ways that media construct historical realities come together to form an overall concept of history. The book series of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies publishes monographs and edited volumes that examine different phenomena of slavery and other forms of strong asymmetrical dependencies in societies. The series follows the BCDSS's research agenda in going beyond the dichotomy of slavery versus freedom by proposing a new key concept, strong asymmetrical dependency, which covers all forms of bondage across time and space. This includes debt bondage, convict labor, tributary labor, servitude, serfdom, and domestic work, as well as forms of wage labor and various types of patronage. Works published in this series will also investigate periods, regions and contexts in world history that have not been directly affected by Western colonization, such as the ancient Near East, pre-modern and modern societies in Asia, Africa, and the pre-colonial Americas.Language Policy Dependency and Slavery StudiesWith its mission to explore phenomena of asymmetrical dependency, the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) and its book series Dependency and Slavery Studies work against forms of gatekeeping which may put obstacles in the way of scholarly work in English felt to be non-standard. The Center and its book series understand language to be intimately connected to power structures and strive to foster an awareness of epistemic dependencies resulting from linguistic dependencies. Given that language is multiply situated and constantly evolving, the editors of Dependency and Slavery Studies do not insist on conformity to the traditional binary standard Englishes (British and American). Authors are thus encouraged to write in their national or regional variety of English
This publication is the first monographic result of the APART project "Migration Phenomena in the Early La Tène Period" and the Austrian Science Fund project "The Celtic cemetery in Mannersdorf (Lower Austria) in the context of east-west cultural contact". From 1976 to 1984, Heribert Schutzbier and Friedrich Opferkuh from the Mannersdorf Museum, together with the Austrian Federal Department of Sites and Monuments, excavated a total of 96 inhumation and cremation burials from the Early and Middle La Tène periods in the field Reinthal Süd. The artefacts are of high quality, seen primarily in the use of materials such as silver, gold, glass and corals, as well as in their technical workmanship. A major find at the cemetery is a bronze situla, which was imported from northern Italy. Certain areas, like the Middle Rhine, the Champagne or the Balkan, must have been well connected to this Lower Austrian region. An analysis revealed a group of "Lt B1 elite or leading graves", with persons wearing double foot and hand bands and the graves containing precious metals. In the central Danube region, the size of the necropolis in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge, with its 96 graves, lies midfield. According to a considered but cautious opinion, it is possible that some of those buried in Mannersdorf were a group of people originating from the area of today's Switzerland. An equally possible hypothesis is, and this does not contradict the first view, that here members of an "upper class" are represented. Printed with the support of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The celtic cemetery of Mannersdorf (Lower Austria) in the context of east and west cultural contact". Although there have been many studies of childhood in Ancient Greece and Rome and in the Middle Ages in the West, there is no such study for the Byzantine world. To fill the gap, this bookreconstructs the most important factors in childhood in Byzantium from the 6th through the 11th century. The main sources are the lives of the saints, which are of central importance for the analysis of the social history and daily life of the population. They also provide an insight into family, social and economic structures, as well as patterns of behaviour. This material is supplemented by legal, medical, theological and other sources.
The contributions in this volume are devoted to the concept of "insularity" in the Mediterranean world. The scholarly concept covered by the term "insularity" is closely tied to questions concerning the specific biological, economic, political, military, cultural, and religious phenomena of islands, resulting simply from the fact that islands are completely surrounded by water and are limited in their resources. These simple criteria, however, account for a great diversity of ways of constructing insularity in the Mediterranean world, in both texts and images. The articles in this volume cover a wide chronological range, from the ancient to the medieval. They also cover a wide range of disciplines, including the history of theology, literary criticism, the study of migration, sociology, and the comparative study of islands (nissology)

Was the Roman Republic a state? This question is discussed by 10 renowned authors, whose contributions to this volume illuminate possible traces of statehood, examine communications structures, and investigate whether the Roman Republic fulfilled the specific functions of a state. The roles of citizens are discussed, along with the themes of conquest and rule and aspects of grain supply, infrastructure, and law. In addition, two articles in this volume deal with the term "state" and the scope of statehood as analytical categories. Thus this volume, inspired by contemporary debates in legal and political science, offers a focused ancient history case study on the state, and an overview of current research on the Roman Republic
The Balkans and the Near East share millennia of a shared history, which stretches from sedentarization in early history to the 20th century. In the Neolithic period, in Mesopotamia and in the Balkans basic techniques and skills were developed on which Europe and the Islamic world could be based later on. Thus, for example, in the centres of "Ancient Europe" - in the middle basin of the Danube River - already in the 5th millennium people experimented with early script systems, long before the first cuneiform texts in Mesopotamia and the hieroglyph texts in ancient Egypt became in use. The "division of labour" between the various scholarly disciplines in the fields of Balkan studies and Near (Middle) East studies resulted in the separation of a shared history into a Southeast European or Balkan history on the one hand and a history of the Near (Middle) East on the other hand. It is therefore the aim of the monograph to unite the separated histories to a joint one. Since this cannot be done by the simple operation of adding up two histories, the volume opens new perspectives. A comparable historiographical piece of work does not yet exist. The geographical space covered by the text extends between Bosnia in the west, the Iraq in the east and the Arabic Peninsula and Egypt in the south. The composition of the material is based on regional and temporal comparison. Specifically, temporal comparison constitutes a great challenge, because approximately 10,000 years are covered. The book is organized by topics and comprises 17 chapters, 455 manuscript pages and approximately 120 graphs and photographs. Conceptualized as an introductory text, the book may also interest a wider public. The style of writing is generally intelligible and addresses for instance the burning contemporary tensions between Islam and Europe. In addition, topics such as history of religion, historical-anthropological, economic, cultural as well as questions of gender relations are addressed on a principal basis.
There is little doubt that sympathy plays a pivotal role in aesthetic as well as moral experience, yet also little agreement on how to describe this connection and its long history. This volume investigates the changes in the concept of sympathy as well as its rhetorical, poetical and ethical functions from antiquity to the threshold of Romanticism. The focus is on sympathy's development from a cosmological principle expressing the coherence, correspondence, and unity of all things into a theoretical key concept of intersubjectivity informing moral philosophy, criticism and literature. Thus, Sympathy in Transformation offers important insights into the many ways in which, when sympathy migrates into diverse discourses in Early Modernity, its ancient origins dwindle out of sight, while some of its central elements re-emerge in a surprising manner
This volume brings together 36 contributions dedicated to Eric Gubel on the occasion of his retirement as head of the Department of Antiquity at the Royal Museums of Art and History, Brussels. Colleagues bring homage to a scholar who made an invaluable mark in the field of Phoenician studies and who spearheaded research, publication and exhibition projects on the archaeology, history, and art of Western Asia and the Mediterranean world. Eric Gubel's research on Egyptian, Levantine, Cypriot, Syrian, and Mesopotamian artistic expressions and interconnections permeated his academic teaching career and is found in the extensive list of publications that opens the volume. To pay tribute to the honoree's wide-ranging field of interest, this collection of essays is conceived as a voyage from Mesopotamia and the Gulf Region through Syria and the Levant to the Phoenician and Punic West. The volume focuses on Antiquity and its reception in contemporary society. The papers, dealing with architecture and urbanism, ceramics, figurines, ivories, metal bowls, seal-amulets, coins, languages and inscriptions, chronology, iconography, identity, and comics, will appeal to anyone interested in the ancient world
- A building erected north of the Ephesus state market in the final decade before Christ is today one of the few prytaneia that have been identified with certainty in the Greek-Roman world. A prytaneion was the main cult building of the polis; it functioned as the official seat of the city's highest municipal authorities, with public cenotaphs and the site of the so-called state fire. It was possible to clarify, for the most part, the history of its construction, as well as the function and the structure of the site, but also the transformation process of this ancient monumental building.
