Eindhoven Brainport: naar geschikte woonsituaties voor internationale kenniswerkers
In: ISSN:1384-2757

Metropolitan Government in Amsterdam and Eindhoven: A Tale of Two Cities
In: Environment and planning. C, Government and policy, Volume 16, Issue 1, p. 25-50
ISSN: 1472-3425
This paper consists of historical case studies of Amsterdam and Eindhoven which provide insight into political decisionmaking over plans for metropolitan government, Amsterdam extended its territory by more than three times in 1921, and Eindhoven by 80 times in 1920. After the 1920s large-scale annexations did not occur around the largest Dutch cities. The annexation of the Bijlmermeer to the southeast of Amsterdam (1966) was an exception. While Amsterdam annexed the Bijlmermeer, intermunicipal cooperation developed in the Eindhoven metropolitan area. It is argued that the political inheritance and the pattern of urbanisation play a major role in explaining the differences between Amsterdam and Eindhoven. Both cities also show similarities. Since the Second World War several plans have been developed for metropolitan governments, but they have not been very successful. Up to 1997, the typical Dutch solution was not metropolitan government but redistribution on a national level. The Netherlands is a small country; both in population and in size it is comparable with metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles or South East England. In an international comparative perspective, one might as well consider the Dutch national state as the real metropolitan government. It remains to be seen whether after a hundred years of discussion the national government will finally decide to establish some form of metropolitan government.

Vision and roadmap Eindhoven energy-neutral 2045 : research report energy in the built environment
In: Ouden, den , P H & Gal , R A J 2014 , Vision and roadmap Eindhoven energy-neutral 2045 : research report energy in the built environment . Technische Universiteit Eindhoven , Eindhoven .
This research report is a deliverable of the project Vision and Roadmap Eindhoven Energy-Neutral in the Built Environment 2045. In this co-creation project with various stakeholders from government, industry and research institutes a desired future scenario has been developed for Eindhoven, with a focus on energy in the built environment. With this desired scenario an investigation has been carried out into what is needed and possible in the shorter and longer term to realise the defined ambitions. The research covered sustainable behaviour, sustainable technologies and sustainable organisation. With the resulting roadmap a number of short-term goals have been defined that build on running activities and take concrete steps to move into the desired direction. The project to create a vision and roadmap for energy in the built environment has been completed. Further steps will be made in the working groups that will be made.

Highly-Skilled Migrants, Gender, and Well-Being in the Eindhoven Region. An Intersectional Analysis
In: Administrative Sciences: open access journal, Volume 11, Issue 3, p. 72
ISSN: 2076-3387
The shortage of skilled labor and the global competition for highly qualified employees has challenged Dutch companies to develop strategies to attract Highly Skilled Migrants (HSMs). This paper presents a study exploring how well-being is experienced by HSMs living in the Eindhoven region, a critical Dutch Tech Hub. Our population includes highly skilled women and men who moved to Eindhoven for work or to follow their partner trajectory. By analyzing data according to these four groups, we detect significant differences among HSMs. Given the exploratory nature of this work, we use a qualitative method based on semi-structured interviews. Our findings show that gender plays a crucial role in experienced well-being for almost every dimension analyzed. Using an intersectional approach, we challenge previous models of well-being, and we detect different factors that influence the respondents' well-being when intersecting with gender. Those factors are migratory status, the reason to migrate, parenthood, and origin (EU/non-EU). When all the factors intersect, participants' well-being decreases in several areas: career, financial satisfaction, subjective well-being, and social relationships. Significant gender differences are also found in migration strategies. Finally, we contribute to debates about skilled migration and well-being by including an intersectional perspective.
