; This article firstly addresses Stuart Hall's account of the contributions of feminism to the formation of cultural studies. Secondly, it deals with the development of feminist criticism in the context of cultural studies, especially in England. Following this line, it retrieves Hall's ideas on the problematic of identity(ies). This dimension of his work is the third approach to be explored, a subject also relevant in feminist theoretical production. The paper additionally points out matches and mismatches of such developments in the Brazilian context. Finally, it concludes that the theme deserves in-depth analysis, especially as the topic of identity plays a central role in current political practice and feminist theory.
Feminist theories also worked on the deconstruction of 'woman' as a category. Nevertheless, we argue that, by incorporating the deconstructive operation, new feminist trends have renewed theory in relation to the specificity of their object of study and political stances. Economic and social conditions on Swedish farms have altered in recent decades, restructuring the sector, but the family farm is still the primary production unit. Sweden is often described as a role model in gender equality, but a gender-unequal situation in farming has been identified, posing a political challenge. This thesis critically assessed how gender inequalities are reproduced within Swedish family farming by analysing how the 'doing' of family farming, in terms of labour and material relations, is shaped and reproduced. This approach focused the analysis on relations of and in production, by placing labour and property at the centre. Other approaches yielded novel information. The theoretical frameworks of labour process theory, political economy, feminist standpoint theory and material feminism, provided conceptual space to examine the reproduction of gender inequalities. In mixed method research, two types of survey data, interviews with farmers and literature on occupational health and safety in agriculture were used to analyse gendered access to arable land and farming conditions; the Swedish agrarian structure and the gendered organisation of the labour process; the gendered understating of agricultural health and safety; and the temporalities of Swedish family farming. The results showed how gender inequalities are reproduced in the temporal and spatial organisation and structuring of the labour process and through unequal distribution of resources. Unequal access to arable land contributes particularly to the gendering of farm management, farm diversification and farm ability to provide household income. A spatial stratification was observed, with larger gendered differences in more productive areas. The farm labour process forms the diverse experience of time, space, economy and labour of men and women in family farming. The different spheres and socio-economic modes of the labour process puts men and women in unequal positions, with differing materialised experiences of family farming and farm work; its risks, problems and consequences. The findings highlight the persistence of family farming in the Swedish agrarian structure and the importance of gender mainstreaming in e.g. policy, education and risk prevention work. More research is needed on the gendering effects of renegotiation of the family farm concept and situated agrarian change.
This article analyzes the production of (hetero)normalization of gender and sexuality in conjunction with age in Physical Education in schools. It presents some findings of a study that sought to analyze the pedagogical practices of teachers of Physical Education in state schools located in seven of the nine municipalities of Vale do Jiquiriçá, Bahia state, Brazil. To access these subjects, we conducted a teacher education seminar and used focus groups and interviews as methodological strategies. Taking as theoretical, methodological and political references feminist poststructuralist studies, queer theory and Foucauldian studies, we discuss how the chronological dimension is treated in a fixed and stagist way and defines what can be known in school and how. The research points to a sometimes continuous and sometimes discontinuous connection between gender, sexuality and age in the Physical Education classes of the region investigated. On the one hand, teachers indicate that sexuality is manifested in school early on, in childhood, due to regional factors, and in an exacerbated form in boys. On the other hand, the chronological age of the bodies of students works as a regulatory norm when it comes to sexuality themes, which contributes to enhance the promotion of the sex-gender-heterosexual practice assumption as natural from adolescence onwards.
The aim of this article is to analyze the logic, assumptions and beliefs present in the context of the Thousand Women Program created in 2006. The article verifies the program's contribution to the social construction of the professional roles attributed to disadvantaged women. The qualitative research was based on the transdisciplinary approach, which refers to the epistemological principles of critical discourse studies of Fairclough, Chouliaraki and Fairclough, together with the theory of social construction of target populations and with references to feminist studies. The results showed that the political discourse and policy design elements of the Thousand Women Program, based on social constructs and institutional cultures, promote skills in traditionally female areas with limited emancipation of women. The conclusion shows that there is a contradiction between the program's discourse and its actual practice, because it reiterates the logic that maintains hegemony and gender polarization.
