This article gives an extensive, detailed historic overview of Baghdad's unique architectural heritage from its ancient Sumerian roots in design through the Islamic and modern periods by an Iraqi professor of architecture. The functionally and aesthetically integrated residential architecture of the ancient Sumerians, its labyrinthine network of abutting houses with open inner-courtyards, ingenious ventilation systems, and enclosed balconies (shanāshīl) that formed the warp and weft1 of the fabric of the urban society which it supported for millennia is disappearing. The ancient patterns which still survive in Baghdad are not only emblematic of Middle Eastern architecture but are the essential imprint of Babel (Babylon) – the mother of all cities. The author demonstrates how modernization and rapid changes brought on by economic growth and population explosions led to unregulated building projects that were often conceived and implemented by foreign firms in abject disregard of the unique and irreplaceable cultural heritage of Iraq. Landmarks of culture have already been lost, and there is much still to lose, but it is not too late if proper funds, urban planning and action at the level of the individual can be marshalled to preserve the living museum of Baghdad's eternal architecture that is the most conspicuous physical expression of its social, cultural and historic identity.
In the current scientific debate, cities represent the contexts in which resources, capital, skills, and talents are concentrated and, at the same time, they are places where many challenges are concentrated regarding environmental (pollution, waste, climate change), economic (unemployment, social exclusion, well-being), political (instability in governance processes, lack of strategic planning), and cultural (training, creativity and innovation) dimensions. The city and historic centers in particular, are able to experiment the paradigm shift from a linear economy to a circular economy, in which synergic, fair, and inclusive processes capable of activating new forms of urban productivity and social and economic innovation are promoted. In particular, the European Commission identifies cultural heritage as the main driver of development and supports strategies in which it is considered as one of the founding elements of possible transformations, which can be activated through mixed top-down/bottom-up approaches, in the short and long term. In this perspective, cultural heritage can play a decisive role in terms of the urban strategy capable of generating new economic, cultural, and social values, which trigger innovative dynamics of local development. To address current urban challenges, this paper attempts to use a multi-criteria analysis to decision support, starting with a Multi-Stakeholder Decision Analysis (M-SDA), in order to assist decision makers in choosing suitable scenarios to trigger circular development processes, taking into account the role of cultural heritage in a systemic landscape perspective. The result is a hybrid methodological approach for designing complex urban regeneration processes able to assess which new uses/functions and potential actions, identified by the involved community, can trigger a circular development model which could be more suitable to implement a model of &ldquo ; culture-led&rdquo ; and &ldquo ; community-driven&rdquo ; development.
Estudiar la ciudad como expresión de lo urbano y en particular los centros históricos, con sus problemáticas y potencialidades, es hoy día una de las prioridades para la ciencia. El trabajo realiza un acercamiento a Camagüey desde tres ejes de análisis: los distintos modos de interacción sociedad-naturaleza, las problemáticas y potencialidades a partir de esa interacción y los conflictos y soluciones que de ella pueden derivarse. Metodológicamente, se establece en cada eje de análisis una aproximación teórica desde la relación sociedad-naturaleza, sus interacciones en el espacio y la conciencia espacial afectiva que demuestra la necesidad de considerar la importancia de los sujetos que habitan el patrimonio. A su vez en los ejes aparece el registro gráfico del análisis empírico para mostrar con ejemplos el resultado de la interrelación academia-práctica, unido a la participación consciente de los sujetos locales en la transformación de entornos reales. En resumen, la contribución intenta mostrar la experiencia acumulada de humanización de la investigación académica a través de articular la gestión pública (de las instituciones) y la participación popular mediada por la universidad.
Since the establishment of Walled cities, populations and built environments have outgrown their fortifications. Consequently, the Walled cities have become distinctly identifiable as historic centers within such cityscapes due to their unique urban form. These cities define local collective identities and provide meaning to memories associated with art and architecture. The exchange of such memories exuberates pride in communities and enables cross-cultural dialogue, which is vital for learning from the past and creating a better society. This research critically reviews the Master Conservation & Redevelopment Plan (MCRP) developed for the Walled city of Lahore, Pakistan. By examining the development strategies, policies, planning tools, and the political context of the MCRP, the study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the project's impact. The findings will highlight the successes and challenges of the MCRP, offering valuable lessons for future urban conservation and redevelopment projects. This research underscores the importance of preserving cultural heritage while promoting sustainable urban development, aiming to inform global policy and planning frameworks for historic urban centers. Ultimately, this study aspires to enhance community pride, identity, and cross-cultural dialogue, creating a more inclusive and culturally enriched urban environment.

Le premier est lié à la volonté affichée des autorités, influencées par les modèles extérieurs de la préservation du patrimoine, de préserver et donc de " conserver " un paysage pourtant en perpétuelle mutation et qui est loin d'être figé dans un passé idéalisé. Le deuxième paradoxe est intimement lié au premier et renvoie au décalage entre les visions de la ville patrimoniale idéale (ou idéalisée) véhiculée par les élites, et les représentations des populations résidentes, qui, avant de voir les centres historiques comme des lieux patrimoniaux, les voient comme des lieux de vie, théâtre de leurs pratiques quotidiennes. L'adéquation entre les pratiques contemporaines et les formes de la ville devient alors le thème central des processus de reconquête urbaine dans les deux villes. La question qui sous-tend les différentes approches des centres historiques des deux villes, est celle de la conciliation entre le global et le local, entre l'universel et le particulier. La démarche comparative de deux espaces, deux paysages, appartenant à des cultures opposées, est alors un atout dans la distinction de ce qui relève des particularismes locaux, propres aux sociétés étudiées et de ce qui relève d'une même influence extérieure.
