Uloga televizijskih suceljavanja u predizbornoj kampanji za predsjednicke izbore - hrvatska iskustva 2005
In: Politicka misao, Volume 42, Issue 1, p. 61-83
The author looks into the role of TV debates in presidential electoral campaigns & how the pioneering attempt at their organization in Croatia in 2005 was received by Croatian voters & how these TV debates differed from the American model. Namely, one of the novel developments in the Croatian 2005 presidential electoral campaigns were three TV debates between Stjepan Mesic & Jadranka Kosor, the two leading candidates who competed in the run-off ballot. The debates were organized on the three national TV networks (HRT, RTL & Nova TV) & the ratings were high. Tables, Graphs, References. Adapted from the source document.
Povijest komunikacijskih i medijskih studija u Hrvatskoj: Politicka misao u komparativnoj perspektivi
In: Politicka misao, Volume 51, Issue 1, p. 133-170
The article analyzes the intelectual and institutional history of communication and media studies in Croatia using a mixed methods approach. Content analysis of articles dealing with communication and media topics published in social science journals, as well as all articles in specialized media and communication journals in the period between 1969 and 2011, shows the intelectual history of the discipline, with the comparative position of Politicka misao in the theoretical and methodological development of the discipline. The sample includes 481 articles, consisting of all full original articles dealing with communication and media topics published in odd years. Included are articles published in social science journals -- Nase teme and Kulturni radnik (both discontinued in 1990), Politicka misao, Revija za sociologiju, Drustvena istrazivanja and Informatologia, and in scientific journals devoted exclusively to communication and media studies (all started after 1990) -- Medijska istrazivanja, Medianali, Medijske studije. Institutional approach was employed for increased understanding of processes which influenced the development of the academic discipline of communication and media studies in Croatia. Results show an increase in number, the diversity of topics, theoretical approaches, and the scientific quality of published articles, and highlight institutional problems in the development of the discipline. Potraga za politickom realnoscu
In: Politicka misao, Volume 50, Issue 4, p. 7-19
In interpreting current social and political processes, one should recognize new and mutually different political and democratic forces, which should offer an alternative to trends which had generated the crisis. Since totalitarian regimes such as fascism and communism (and even neoliberalism) did not solve the crisis of capitalism in the past, writers like Habermas, Searle, Luhmann, Wolin, Vesting and others do not consider them as potential solutions for the contemporary crisis. The solutions are not being sought within the framework of universalisation of particular interests either. Even less they look for a solution within some universal virtue that would represent all other virtues. On the contrary -- the contemporary theory recognizes that humanity in its lifeworld operates within different media and that the unified lifeworld is represented in different, incommensurable media, so the new theory attempts to create a modus vivendi among various representations of the world, not one single unitary interpretation. Contemporary theories are interested in the issue of coexistence between incommensurable differences, and thus they ask: how to preserve pluralism of social life. This process remains open. On the other hand, any idea of a single solution within a single unified medium leads to renewal of totalitarianisms, or even a world war, a new Holocaust or a new Hiroshima. Televizijska javna drama: Kako je 11. rujna 2001. postao 9/11
In: Politicka misao, Volume 51, Issue 4
Almost seventy years ago German philosophers Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno predicted the immense influence of capitalism and commercialization on media systems and media content. Today commodification and the hunger for fun, spectacle, shock and emotions have become an intrinsic part of media offer and consumption. The central place belongs to television and the transformation of the news industry into packages of high-emotional stories, very often in sequels. Spectacle, strong emotional bond and empathetic members of audience are important elements of what media expert Brian A. Monahan calls public drama - a new hybrid form of television news. The American mainstream media transformed the terrorist attack on the USA on the 11th of September 2001 into '9/11' - a series of dramatic and emotional stories which imposed certain frames of understanding of what happened - and which were built into the cultural memory. In the first few hours after the attack the core of the 9/11 narrative was born: moral shock, a strong emotional bond with the victims of the attacks, transformation of rescuers into heroes, a feeling of love and togetherness among Americans, along with worldwide compassion. Emphasis was put on emotions, fear and a sort of spectacle of crisis, with little discussion about responsibility and critical evaluation of the reasons behind the attacks. Focus on human tragedies, fear and panic are immersed in a wider story about terrorist attacks which is a big threat to America. The power of television and its pictures to form and impose frames of understanding events is huge, along with the long-term consequences this can have on the audience, but politics as well. Komparativna analiza postsocijalistickih medijskih sustava
In: Politicka misao, Volume 50, Issue 2, p. 38-59
The text develops a new theoretical model for the analysis of post-socialist media systems in European third wave democracies. The five-dimensional theoretical framework of Hallin and Mancini (2004) is expanded with the approach of historical institutionalism and path dependency in order to explain the convergence and divergence of media systems in three key time periods. The model distinguishes between three distinctive historical periods in the development of media systems, consequences of three key critical historical junctures -- modernization and democratic revolutions in the 19th century, socialist period, and the post-socialist period of new democracies. Thus the analysis includes, in addition to the first period of modernization that is crucial in the development of media systems in Western Europe (Hallin and Mancini, 2004), for the first time and explicitly also the socialist period and the contemporary period of post-socialist democratic media systems. Globalno ratište i glasovi iz pustinje ; Global Battlefield and the Voices from the Desert
; The concept of authoritarianism is used in the text as a way to shed light on the authoritarian political and military activities of those countries that ignore the modern civilisation's legal and moral achievements in an attempt to "envelop time" in concepts such as propaganda, war and terrorism. Reflections on war include theses by Sigmund Freud, Erich Fromm, Claude LéviStrauss, Friedrich Nietzsche, Noam Chomsky, and other authors who "expand the framework" of war. This broadened context is then used in order to observe the phenomena of "global war" and "media war", and the terrorist attack in Paris. The goal is to highlight the new/old role of the mass media's "manufacturing consent", and to clarify the role and power of media in the current rise of terrorism in the world.

Mediji i demokratizacija: izazovi s kojima se susreće potpodručje u nastajanju ; Media and Democratisation: Challenges for an Emerging Sub-field
; This article seeks to compile an empirically-based understanding of the role of media in countries in transition. The study focuses on the processes of political socialization, behaviour and accountability, and gives examples from three regions: Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East/North Africa region. We draw on some of the major works relevant to the study of mass media in these transitional contexts with the aim of discerning emergent theories available to the study of media and democratisation. While aware of the limitations posed by the nature and scope of the sample of the studies reviewed, we do identify and discuss some of the potentially key obstacles to theory-building and propose some alternative paths of enquiry.

Utjecaj terorizma na ulogu i djelovanje medija
In: Politicka misao, Volume 42, Issue 4, p. 115-128
In the wake of 11 September 2001 not only the scope & the goals of terrorism drastically expanded but also the circle of social groups & institutions it encroaches upon. The essence of the "classical" terrorism is aptly summarized by the old Chinese adage: "kill one, scare hundreds." The attack on the WTC altered these numbers not only for that attack but also for most terrorist attacks all over the world, so this aphorism might now run: "kill thousands, scare billions." If the classical terrorism was a sort of a "trio" whose participants were "terrorists & their victims & power." contemporary terrorism increasingly takes the font of a "quartet": "terrorists & their victims & power & mass media.". Bezumlje govora mržnje – biološka i kulturna dimenzija ; The Mindlessness of Hate Speech – Biological and Cultural Dimension
Različite su interpretacije govora mržnje. No, svaka od njih govor mržnje promišlja u kontekstu odnosa slobode govora i mogućih nesloboda uvjetovanih pravnim reguliranjem i sankcioniranjem. ; Hate speech is interpreted in various ways. It is always analysed in the context of the relationship between freedom of speech and the possible lack of freedom caused by legal regulation and sanctioning of hate speech. In this paper we want to start from the consideration of hate itself (taking into account philosophical dimensions, social contexts and the contribution of politics to the development of hate speech) and in this way consider it in its biological and cultural dimensions. Using specific examples of hate speech, we aim to show the intertwining of the biological and the intellectual, the cultural and the physical, the ideological and the emotional. The analysis of some cases of hate speech and the passion of individuals involved in this psychological and intellectual immaturity makes clear how important it is for philosophy to lunge into this poor reality – steps taken to give philosophical views on these phenomena, but also basic criteria for possible orientation in other scientific research.

Prisvajanje dozvole za stvaralaštvo ; Appropriating the Licence to Creativity ; S'approprier la licence pour la créativité ; Aneignung der Lizenz zur Kreativität
Masovni mediji smanjuju mogućnost kreativne aktivnosti u medijima dok istodobno razvijaju manipulativne oblike stvaralaštva. Ti oblici zahtijevaju da ih se ustanovi, objasni i komentira. ; Creativity is always associated with free human activity – with beauty, art, human inventions Most of the time it is something acceptable and good. But what happens in a time of global manipulation? Does the new time develop new types and forms of creativity? What will an analyses of global mass media manipulation performance reveal? The goal of the paper is to show a dark side of creativity in mass media. Mass media reduce the possibility of creative action in the media whilst they develop manipulative forms of creativity. These forms ought to be detected, explained, and commented.

Objavljivanje neistina i manipuliranje cinjenicama u hrvatskim medijima i mogucnosti zastite privatnosti, casti i ugleda
In: Politicka misao, Volume 44, Issue 1, p. 93-116
Tabloidization, sensationalism, the loss of credibility & professionalism, & the violations of ethic norms & standards have been increasingly evident in the Croatian mass media. The broadening of media freedoms is not accompanied by a sufficient level of responsibility regarding reporting; consequently, there is a sort of the media bullying whose victims are individuals or companies. Some of those whose privacy, honor & reputation have been violated send denials to the media, appeal to the journalist associations or seek justice through judicial bodies. In some cases the reports in question were a product of objective & professional reporting, while in others untruths were reported or facts manipulated. The authors analyze the major elements of the above phenomena in the media & the society & the possibilities of protecting the violated rights & interests within the framework of the existing regulations of the Republic of Croatia.
