Apart from classical ways of using narrative analysis in everyday communication as well as in linguistics and sociology (eh. 3) it is conceivable to detect the narrator's interest constellations (eh. 4) and a central stock of his general action capacities and specific institutional skills (eh. 2,5) by way of his retrospective interpretation in verbal off-hand narratives of his own past eonduct. His willingness to tell about personal experiences gets hirn into constraints to become more specific on the one hand, for if events are being told their respeetive consequences as new events have to be revealed etc. This constraint to become more specific brings up the narrator's former and partly (at the time of the narrative) still existent actual interest constellations, because those are motivating, constituting elements of the events to be told about. On the other hand personally experienced stories point at wider action contexts and interrelationships (due to their retrospective character), and the kind in which narrators take account of these action contexts and interrelationships reveals something about their different degrees of action capacities (eh. 1). Both questions are only legitimate if we have the pre-eondition of the sociological narrative analysis as proposed here: that the action contexts in the narrative are not just subjeetively or even fictiously self-experienced, but really accomplished. This pre-condition of sociological narrative analysis can be justified as a plausible imputation by the following aspect: As long as personally experienced stories are really told as off-hand narratives, the telling of them has to keep up the red line of temporal and causal linkage of past experiences in their respective relationship with the narrator, who at the same time is one of the central persons of action or at least of suffering in the story. In that respect telling those stories reproduces the existential conditions and orientations of the actual action system in important dimensions (except the layer of actual definitions of the situation) (eh. 1).

Das hohe Wachstum des motorisierten Verkehrs wird kontrovers erklärt: von den einen als Ausdruck dynamischer Systeme, die expandieren, intensivieren und ihre Systemvielfalt erhöhen. Von anderen als Zusammenspiel von Wirtschaftswachstum, künstlich verbilligten und sinkenden Verkehrspreisen und Nachfragerpräferenzen, von Dritten vor allem als Erfolg einer durchsetzungsstarken Kraftfahrzeugindustrie bei Verkehrspolitik und Straßenbau. Das hier vorgelegte Erklärungsgerüst geht von Kapazitätserweiterungen des Verkehrsangebots durch Geschwindigkeitserhöhungen, Netzerweiterungen, Vergrößerung der Beförderungs-gefäße und sich anpassenden Randbedingungen aus. Die bisher als Restriktionen interpretierten Nachfrageelemente Reisezeitaufwand, biologische Grenzen, psychische Anstrengungen durch Veränderungen, soziale Zwänge individuellen Verkehrsverhaltens an das anderer, der finanzielle Aufwand und die staatliche Korrektur des Prozessablaufs erweisen sich bei näherer Betrachtung eher auf Anpassung, Prozesserhaltung und Prozessverstärkung eingerichtet. Neben Verhaltensstabilitäten auf der Nachfrageseite sorgt die begrenzte Koordinationsfähigkeit des Staates dafür, dass sich Kapazitätserweiterungen im Gesamtbereich von Verkehrsweg, Fahrzeug und Verkehrsablauf in Verkehrswachstum verwandeln, das wiederum rückkoppelt und erneute Kapazitätserweiterungen erzwingt. Diese Systemdynamik prägt die Ökonomie eines Sektors traditionellen Markt- und Preis-Versagens, denn sie beeinflusst die faktische Internalisierbarkeit externer Entzugs- und Gestaltungs-effekte verkehrstechnologischen Fortschritts. Schließlich ist Verkehrswachstum nur noch Eigendynamik, die sich aus Zwängen des Gesamtsystems ständig erneuert. Die Selbststeuerungsfähigkeit dieses Fließgleichgewichtes reicht bis zur offenen Grenze trendkonformer Umwertung und Umorganisation eines dynamischen Systems als weiterem Wachstumsfaktor. Induzierte Kapazitätserweiterungen bilden Innovationen, wie neuartige und schnellere Raumüberwindungssysteme, der Umbau von Flächennutzungssystemen, die Änderung der Zeitorganisation, die Forderung von Automobilität als Grundrecht und die Interpretation steigender Sozialfolgekosten als monetäre Wohlstandserhöhung. Bis dieser Megatrend in höchstbelasteten Bereichen kippt, verändern seine Rückkopplungen Begriffsinhalte, die Wahrnehmung der Wirklichkeit und die Ziele gesellschaftlichen Bewusstseins. Kern dieser Expansionslogik ist der neugierige Mensch mit seinem Streben, durch Gewohnheiten und Variationen sein optimales Erregungsniveau zu stabilisieren. Damit sorgt er für ständigen Nachschub und strebt als "Mängelwesen" danach, seine Defizite vor allem durch technische billigere bequemere Lösungen auszugleichen. Deshalb wirken alle Restriktionen als Herausforderungen, um intelligente Auswege zu finden. Ein besonderer Ausweg ist der Verkehr. Fast alle Aktivitäten des Menschen sind mit Verkehr verknüpft, und Reiseweiten kennen keine Obergrenze. Die psychologischen, soziologischen und politologischen Aspekte legen ein neues Selbstverständnis der Verkehrswissenschaften nahe. Konsequenzen für Prognosemodelle sind offensichtlich, indem sozialwissenschaftliche Indikatoren zeitökonomische Ansätze stärker ergänzen. Es reicht nicht, unerwünschten motorisierten Verkehr umzuverteilen und zu optimieren. Eine umfassender verstandene aktive Mobilitätspolitik müsste nicht nur in die räumliche Strukturpolitik (Raumordnungs- und Stadtentwicklungspolitik) hineinreichen, sondern in alle Aktivitätsbereiche des Menschen, um bewusst alternative Freiräume zum sozial positiven Ausleben von Antriebsüberschuss zu schaffen. ; The high growth rates of motorized traffic are a subject of controversial debate. Some say that dynamic systems just expand, intensify and increase their variety. Others see traffic growth as result of a dynamic interplay of economic growth, artificially low and further declining transport prices and consumer preferences. Yet others believe that traffic growth is the result of the powerful car industry that shapes transport policy, taxation, and transport infrastructure plans. The concept presented here starts with increases of supply capacity by higher speed, expanded and improved route network, larger vehicles, and expanding boundary conditions. On the side of transport demand elements such as travel time, biological limits, psychological stress, social obstacles, financial burdens and state intervention are interpreted by economists as restrictions. Taking a closer empirical look at these restrictions then they prove to tend to adjust, to maintain and intensify traffic growth. In addition to these factors of behavioral stability on the demand side it is the limited coordination capability of the state which ensures that increased capacity in the range of traffic routes, vehicles and traffic flow turn into traffic growth that - again - feeds back and forces further capacity increase. This system dynamics characterizes transport economics as a field of traditional market- and price-failure. It has a negative impact on the de facto internalisation of negative external effects of transport-technological progress. Finally, traffic growth has a momentum of its own which constantly renews by restrictions and constraints of the total system. It is an outstanding functioning monitoring system, called homeostasis, which regulates the steady-state. It extends to the open border of trend-conforming re-evaluation and reorganization of a dynamic system as another growth factor. The forced capacity increase is connected with innovations such as new and faster space bridging systems, the reshaping of land-use systems, the chance of temporal organization, the demand for automobility as a fundamental right and the interpretation of environmental and social costs as an increase in welfare. Until this mega trend reverses in areas and groups most exposed, its feed-backs will change the meaning of terms, the perception of space and reality and the awareness of the societal impact and societal objectives. The "hard core" of endless growth is curious, inquisitive, and restless people continuously searching and striving to stabilize their optimal level of arousal by habits and variations. As many habits as possible and as much varity as necessery provide a constant but varied supply of stimuli. As deficient biological beings humans seek to compensate for human deficits with technical cheap easy safe assistance systems. Therefore all restrictions and constraints are challenges to find smart ways out. Traffic is a popular solution. Almost all human activities are connected with movements. Motorized transport is peculiar because potential demand for transport has no limit. Travel distances can be stretched out indefinitely. Psychological, sociological and political impacts and characteristics suggest a new way of transport sciences understanding themselves. Consequences for forecast models are obvious. The introduction of social-science aspects aimed at complementing existing time-economic approaches. It is not enough to redistribute and to optimize undesired motorized traffic. A broadly-defined policy of mobility should not only extend far into town and country planning policy but into all areas of human activity creating free space for acting out one's "drive surplus" in a socially positive way.
