In this book, Nathaniel Potter, principal architect of the University of Maryland, chronicles his efforts in conjunction with John B. Davidge in founding the College of Medicine of Maryland in 1807. The College was the forerunner of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Potter delineates the selecting of competent faculty instructors to serve under Davidge as first Dean, and their successful petitions to the Maryland State Legislature for official charter. He also describes in detail the turmoil resulting from subsequent 1825 legislation which wrested control of the University away from the founding Regents and placed it under a state-appointed Board of Trustees.
